Persepolis, from Glasgow in a School Bus - With Stops on the Way (Paperback): Richard M. Orr Persepolis, from Glasgow in a School Bus - With Stops on the Way (Paperback)
Richard M. Orr
R459 Discovery Miles 4 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In June, 1973, a group of eleven teachers, students and pupils from Glasgow boarded a new school minibus and began a trip - across Europe, Turkey, Syria and Iraq - to Persepolis, in Iran, the ceremonial capital of the great king Darius of Persia and his son and successor Xerxes. This is the story, based on the diary and photographs of one of the teachers. A fascinating mix of archaeology and culture, the practicalities of travel on a tight budget, bureaucracy, political disruption, and food and drink. Liberally illustrated with maps of the route and photographs of ancient sites, cities and landscapes, and of the minibus and its inhabitants.

The Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path National Trail is an easy-to-follow 130-mile trail that combines the best of inland and coastal walking in Norfolk, and one that, being well waymarked, largely flat and within easy reach of public transport for most of its length, is ideal for people new to long-distance walks. Described in 11 stages, the route can be walked in just over a week but also easily split into day walks or over a series of weekends, with full information about access to start and finish points for each stage by public transport. This handy guidebook is illustrated throughout with extracts of OS 1:50K mapping and stunning photographs depicting the Trail in all seasons and describes points of interest along the way, including the Norfolk Songlines sculptures, and also facilities available in the towns and villages. The trail is a walk of two halves. The Peddars Way begins at Knettishall Heath in Suffolk and follows the route of an old Roman road for over 40 miles to Holme-next-the-Sea, where it meets the Norfolk Coast Path (which begins nearby, at Hunstanton). This then follows the spectacular Norfolk coast to the seaside town of Hopton-on-Sea.

The extraordinary story of how the Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship, was found in the most hostile sea on Earth in 2022 On 21 November 1915, Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship, Endurance, finally succumbed to the crushing ice. Its crew watched in silence as the stern rose twenty feet in the air and then, it was gone. The miraculous escape and survival of all 28 men on board have entered legend. And yet, the iconic ship that bore them to the brink of the Antarctic was considered forever lost. A century later, an audacious plan to locate the ship was hatched. The Ship Beneath the Ice gives a blow-by-blow account of the two epic expeditions to find the Endurance. As with Shackleton's own story, the voyages were filled with intense drama and teamwork under pressure. In March 2022, the Endurance was finally found to headlines all over the world. Written by Mensun Bound, the Director of Exploration on both expeditions, this captivating narrative includes countless fascinating stories of Shackleton and his legendary ship. Complete with a selection of Frank Hurley's photos from Shackleton's original voyage in 1914-17, as well as from the expeditions in 2019 and 2022, The Ship Beneath the Ice is the perfect tribute to this monumental discovery.

My Life in Secret Coverdale - Autobiography (Hardcover): Douglas Cox My Life in Secret Coverdale - Autobiography (Hardcover)
Douglas Cox
R685 Discovery Miles 6 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One day as I was browsing through our local newspaper what I saw made my eyes sparkle. The headline said 'Secret Coverdale' and that made my memories drift far away. I have spent more than 25 years up there, making many friends and acquaintances. The story in my newspaper was saying how Secret Coverdale looks and how holiday-making tourists miss it as they tour around the Yorkshire Dales. They surely do. All the beautiful picturesque scenery they are missing. I thought to myself, I will write a brief story about Coverdale and send it to the newspaper to let their readers have a read of my times I spent up there. So, pen to paper, I wrote and wrote and kept on writing, and by the time I had finished I had more than 200 pages. Far too much to put in a newspaper, so I sent it to my publishers instead and they published it into a book. I tell of many things about Secret Coverdale, meeting many old characters of the dale and all the dales which surround Coverdale, all 700 square miles of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Together with 200 splendid photographs I took, making my book in excess of 400 pages, all in glossy hardback. You could say I know Secret Coverdale like the back of my hand.

This guidebook offers all the information walkers need to enjoy the 338km (210 miles) of the Severn Way. Beginning at the River Severn's source in Powys, mid-Wales, the route follows the entire Severn Valley, meandering through many superb landscapes and interesting towns and villages before finishing near Bristol, in south-west England. The step-by-step route description is divided into four county sections, accompanied by OS map extracts and packed with historical and geographical information about the places along the way. Also includes a route to the source of the river via Plynlimon and a link route from Severn Beach back to Bristol at the end. The River Severn pulls together threads of history, trade, commerce, civil war and the lives of ordinary folk to produce a tapestry that is finely woven and rich in colour. That walkers should want to trace its course, its many twists and turns, is hardly surprising, not least because of its capacity to offer countless challenges and plentiful delights. Walking the Severn Way is a chance to get away from it all and relax without having to resort to distant mountain regions.

The Challenge of Brazil (Paperback): Kenneth Payne The Challenge of Brazil (Paperback)
Kenneth Payne
R204 Discovery Miles 2 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sister Katey's letters reveal, vividly, life in a little-known part of Brazil. The reader is struck by the caring attitude and generous spirit of those who have very little to spare and share. It is a compassionate but unsentimental account in which practical and spiritual help go hand in hand with the help of trained lay leaders - perhaps a pattern for the Church in other parts of our world.

Eager Traveller (Paperback): Joanna Quant Saunders Eager Traveller (Paperback)
Joanna Quant Saunders
R221 Discovery Miles 2 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Eager Traveller was written for the grandchildren of the author in order that they should see how different life was fifty years ago. It is the story of a London child, dominated by a stern father, who spent much of her time in the company of loving relatives. On leaving school her father sent her into private service where she was the lowest of the low, and made to take orders from all and sundry. She enjoyed the travels of the great families and their families and their servants as they moved about the country following the huntin', shootin' and fishin' seasons. She married a farm worker and as there was little money she was unable to travel, so she became an "Armchair Traveller" until chance and someone's bad luck took her abroad for the first time at the age of forty-one. From then on travel came frequently and the greatest adventure came in 1971 when she took her family behind the Iron Curtain into Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. They found kind and happy people who, although they had known great sufferings, showed kindness to the "Engleski". A strong psychic thread runs through the story

Slow Trains Around Spain - A 3,000-Mile Adventure on 52 Rides (Paperback): Tom Chesshyre Slow Trains Around Spain - A 3,000-Mile Adventure on 52 Rides (Paperback)
Tom Chesshyre
R239 Discovery Miles 2 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Between soaring mountains, across arid deserts, parched plains and valleys of fruit orchards and olive groves, down glittering coastlines and along viaducts towering above plunging ravines... there is no better way to see Spain than by train. Rail enthusiast Tom Chesshyre, author of Slow Trains to Venice, Ticket to Ride and Tales from the Fast Trains, hits the tracks once again to take in the country through carriage windows on a series of clattering rides beyond the popular image of "holiday Spain" (although he stops by in Benidorm and Torremolinos too). From hidden spots in Catalonia, through the plains of Aragon and across the north coast to Santiago de Compostela, Chesshyre continues his journey via Madrid, the wilds of Extremadura, dusty mining towns, the cathedrals and palaces of Valencia and Granada, and finally to Seville, Andalusia's beguiling (and hot) capital. Encounters? Plenty. Mishaps? A lot. Happy Spanish days? All the way.

J. D. Rayner
R288 Discovery Miles 2 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

I had a lot of fun and many laughs in all the places that I visited except one - Auschwitz. It was awful. It is awful. Lady F and I visited the death camp on a grey, drizzly day in September and it left a lasting impression. As our guide on the day said, 'Everyone in the world should come here to remind themselves of how cruel the human race can be. Look at the world today, it is happening again. Do we really want a repeat?' He is quite right. Do we want a repeat?

Dick Isherwood Mountaineer - An Anthology (Hardcover): John Ashburner Dick Isherwood Mountaineer - An Anthology (Hardcover)
John Ashburner
R1,091 Discovery Miles 10 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dick Isherwood learnt his craft in the 1960s in the competitive melee of the Cambridge University Mountaineering Club. His enthusiasm meant he took every opportunity to gain more experience on steep rock - dry, grotty or wet - but by 1964 he was already looking to wider horizons and joined Henry Day's "Cambridge Chitral Expedition". By 1969 he had become one of the top rock climbers in the UK, repeating many of the hardest routes and putting up a few new ones in North Wales, the Lakes and Scotland. A job move to the Far East then enabled him to concentrate on his passion for small alpine-type expeditions, much in the style of Shipton and Tilman. One example was his audacious two-man attempt on Annapurna II (7937m). But not all trips were to the Himalaya - he climbed the Carstensz Pyramide (4884m) in New Guinea - one of the "Seven Summits" - by a new route and rounded off the trip with an epic solo ascent of Sunday Peak. He finally "settled down" in 1999 in Port Townsend, Washington and whilst still mountaineering, became an accomplished sailor, frequently taking himself off on long solo trips in his sea kayak or sailing boat around the north Pacific coast. A blogger recently wrote "Everyone had a Dick Isherwood story". This anthology tells many as described in his writings and those of his friends. They illustrate some of his extraordinary adventures over more than 50 years.
