In A lion on the landing Elsa Joubert provides a window into the
past of the Afrikaner people. She uses her own life story as a way
of portraying the reality of living as an Afrikaner child in the
first half of the twentieth century. It is the same formula that
she applied in her novel, The Long Journey of Poppie Nongena, to
reveal the truths of life for black people in South Africa.
