Carli Botha was almost seven when her Italian-born mother, Bella, died during the birth of her malformed, brainless [anencephalitic] brother. At the childbed Carli overhears Lena, for many years the domestic at the Grootvlei farm house, saying, “It’s a cathead, Master.”
Carli is left behind in the care of her dipsomaniac father, Wilhelm. Dora also helps out in the farm house at times. During the day she comes to Carli’s rescue. A strong woman, the sword dangling over the head of the master of Grootvlei is in her hands.
