Two beam and multiple beam interferometric methods are given, together with their application in the investigation of fibre properties. Attention is paid to basic ideas leading to the formation of interferograms. Deduction of data from interferograms by digitizing the images and extraction of index profiles by the aid of computer programs are presented.
