Mommsen, the grand old man of Roman history, won the Nobel Prize
for his major work - although in fact it was never finished. This
is a recreated version of the missing volume on the emperors, put
together 150 years after the first was written. The modern
introduction is fascinating and the text a masterpiece in the
clarity of its storytelling. Despite Mommsen's own unease with the
period, his explanations remain very crisp and compelling. (Kirkus
