The Academy of Parish Clergy 2020 Reference Book of the Year 2020
Association of Catholic Publishers first place award in Scripture
2020 Catholic Press Association third place award for best new
religious book series This reading of Mark's Gospel engages this
ancient text from the perspective of contemporary feminist concerns
to expose and resist all forms of domination that prevent the full
flourishing of all humans and all creation. Accordingly, it
foregrounds the Gospel's constructions of gender in
intersectionality with the visions, structures, practices, and
personnel of Roman imperial power. This reading embraces a rich
tradition of feminist scholarship on the Gospel, as well as
masculinity studies, particularly pervasive hegemonic masculinity.
Its politically engaged discussion of Mark's Gospel provides a
resource for clergy, students, and laity concerned with
contemporary constructions of gender, power, and a world in which
all might experience fullness of life.

2019 Association of Catholic Publishers Book of the Year In this
volume, Alice Ogden Bellis considers the book of Proverbs as a
structural whole, the sages having designed it in such a way as to
make positive statements about women and to undercut the negative
ones. By grouping Proverbs together around common issues, the
reader is called to consider the perennial moral questions of
wealth and poverty, diligence and laziness, and integrity and
corruption, as well as the relationship among these values. The
result is much more complex and has greater depth than the random
list of bromides that most of Proverbs is often thought to be. This
volume opens up a multi-dimensional spiritual puzzle.
My mother was a prostitute. My grandmother and great-grandmother
were prostitutes. Maybe I should have given the family business a
chance... BBC RADIO 4 PICK OF THE WEEK, Katie Puckrik 'Eliska's
story is an extraordinary and powerful read. It's the ultimate book
about survival and an against-all-odds fight to make it in life.
Highly recommend.' Clover Stroud 'A scintillating, devastating
memoir, and a fiercely witty and unabashed tribute to the toughness
of the human spirit.' Damian Le Bas
__________________________________________________ To westerners,
being Gypsy means being wild, romantic and free. To Eliska Tanzer,
it means being rented out to dance for older men. It means living
without running water. It means not being allowed a job or an
education. It means being stuffed into a bare room with all your
aunts and cousins, fighting over the thin, stained blanket the way
you fight over the last piece of half-mouldy bread. It means
joining the family prostitution ring when you're still a child. But
Eliska was given a way out. Slung out of Hoe School and shipped to
England in a washing machine box, she thought she had made it. But
her dream soon turned into a nightmare. A moving and timely memoir
from a powerful new voice in literature.
"A compelling, fun, and thought-provoking story of magical
adventure, coming of age, sacrifice, and family, with secrets that
add a lingering darkness to the entire tale."-- Booklist Two young
witches, once inseparable, are set at odds by secrets and wildly
dangerous magic In the waning days of World War II, with Allied
victory all but certain, desperate Nazi diabolists search for a
demonic superweapon to turn the tide. A secluded castle somewhere
in the south of Germany serves as a laboratory for experiments
conducted upon human prisoners, experiments as vile as they are
deadly. Across the English Channel, tucked into the sleepy Cumbrian
countryside, lies the Library, the repository of occult knowledge
for the Societe des Eclairees, an international organization of
diabolists. There, best friends Jane Blackwood and Miriam Cantor,
tutored by the Societe's Librarian--and Jane's mother--Nancy,
prepare to undergo the Test that will determine their future as
diabolists. When Miriam learns her missing parents are suspected of
betraying the Societe to the Nazis, she embarks on a quest to clear
their names, a quest involving dangerous diabolic practices that
will demand more of her than she can imagine. Meanwhile Jane,
struggling with dark obsessions of her own, embraces a forbidden
use of the Art that could put everyone she loves in danger. As
their friendship buckles under the stress of too many secrets, Jane
and Miriam will come face to face with unexpected truths that
change everything they know about the war, the world, and most of
all themselves. After all, some choices cannot be unmade--and a
sacrifice made with the most noble intention might end up creating
a monster.

The author of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus argues in favor of a
"traditional" Greco-Roman gender ideology: that because men and
women are biologically different, they ought to behave differently
in the family and society. His gender-specific beliefs carry over
into his teachings for the house churches, where only free married
men are eligible to serve as leaders, teachers, and preachers,
while women are expected to take up the subordinate female domestic
roles of wife, mother, and household manager. This volume
encourages a deeper engagement with the difficult issues-gender,
race, and power-raised by these letters. By studying the Pastoral
Letters with our minds sharpened and our hearts turned toward a
generous freedom, we can struggle most productively with the
influences of their teachings, past and present, and we can create
a future church and a future world that are more just, truly
inclusive, and indelibly marked by God's grace. From the Wisdom
Commentary series Feminist biblical interpretation has reached a
level of maturity that now makes possible a commentary series on
every book of the Bible. It is our hope that Wisdom Commentary, by
making the best of current feminist biblical scholarship available
in an accessible format to ministers, preachers, teachers,
scholars, and students, will aid all readers in their advancement
toward God's vision of dignity, equality, and justice for all. The
aim of this commentary is to provide feminist interpretation of
Scripture in serious, scholarly engagement with the whole text, not
only those texts that explicitly mention women. A central concern
is the world in front of the text, that is, how the text is heard
and appropriated by women. At the same time, this commentary aims
to be faithful to the ancient text, to explicate the world behind
the text, where appropriate, and not impose contemporary questions
onto the ancient texts. The commentary addresses not only issues of
gender (which are primary in this project) but also those of power,
authority, ethnicity, racism, and classism, which all intersect.
Each volume incorporates diverse voices and differing
interpretations from different parts of the world, showing the
importance of social location in the process of interpretation and
that there is no single definitive feminist interpretation of a
text.
So desperate that when wealthy strangers ask her to procure
libations for an extravagant party Ellie sells them everything she
has, including some booze she acquired under unusual circumstances.
What Ellie doesn't know is that this booze is special. Distilled
from foul mushrooms by a cult of diabolists, those who drink it see
terrible things - like the destruction of Long Island in fire and
flood. The cult is masquerading as a church promising salvation
through temperance and a return to "the good old days," so it's
hard for Ellie to take a stand against them, especially when her
father joins, but Ellie loves Long Island, and she loves her
family, and she'll do whatever it takes to ensure neither is torn
apart.

This volume presents the discipline 's best thinking on
sustainability in written, drawn, and built form, drawing on over
fifteen years of peer-reviewed essays and national design awards
published by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture
(ACSA).
Providing a primer on sustainability, useful to teachers and
students alike, the selected essays address a broad range of
issues. Combined with design projects that highlight issues
holistically, they promote an understanding of the principles of
sustainability and further the integration of sustainable methods
into architectural projects.
Using essays that alternately revise and clarify twentieth
century architectural thinking, The Green Braid places
sustainability at the centre of excellent architectural design. No
other volume addresses sustainability within the context of
architectural history, theory, pedagogy and design, making this
book an ideal source for architects in framing their practices, and
therefore their architectural production, in a sustainable
manner.
Winner of Best Book of the Year at the Singapore Book Publishers
Association awards 2018. Robert Kuok is one of the most highly
respected businessmen in Asia. But this legendary Overseas Chinese
entrepreneur, commodities trader, hotelier and property mogul has
maintained a low profile and seldom shed light in public on his
business empire or personal life. That is, until now. In these
memoirs, the 94-year-old Kuok tells the remarkable story of how,
starting in British Colonial Malaya, he built a multi-industry,
multinational business group. In reflecting back on 75 years of
conducting business, he offers management insights, discusses
strategies and lessons learned, and relates his principles,
philosophy, and moral code. Kuok has lived through fascinating and
often tumultuous times in Asia - from British colonialism to
Japanese military occupation to post-colonial Southeast Asia and
the dramatic rise of Asian economies, including, more recently,
China. From his front-row seat and as an active participant, this
keen, multi-cultural observer tells nearly a century of Asian
history through his life and times. Readers interested in business,
management, history, politics, culture and sociology will all enjoy
Robert Kuok's unique and remarkable story.
A boxed set in four volumes, each volume in the series represents a
core sample of the firm at this moment in time, highlighting a
grouping of four major projects that share a common theme but not
necessarily the same typology or program. The themes are threads
that weave the work together and as a whole define the design
philosophy of the firm. The firm's emphasis on sustainability is a
current that runs through the narrative of each book. Each book
focuses on design process and collaboration. Each project is
presented in depth and will underscore the methodology, aesthetics,
techniques and ethos of the firm. With future volumes planned,
these sets will track the progression of ideas that evolve over
time through the work that enacts the ideas, and informs the work
to come.
FUSE - Blurring the boundary between landscape and building. From
the scale of the building to the scale of the city, these projects
integrate architecture, building systems thinking and natural
systems. This philosophy takes the landscape and ecological forces
that are the context and incorporates them within the design of the
building, urban planning, and infrastructure design.
EVOLVE - Repositioning and Adaptive Re-Use of existing buildings.
These projects investigate buildings as artifact and re-construe
them for a new life as the original architecture degrades and the
mission of the buildings change. Analysis of original design
intent, construction methods, ornamentation and the cultural
processes that have been enacted on the building over time form the
basis of design. Fundamental architectural relationships, building
envelope and circulation are re-thought and restructured to create
new uses and relationships, completely transforming these spaces.
FILTER - Integration of culture and climate into sustainable
architecture. FX Fowle practices a contemporary language of
modernism, one that contrasts sharply from the original ethos of
universalism and the tabula rasa. The specificities of climate and
culture impact the design of form and program in FX Fowle
buildings. The lenses of culture and climate are necessarily
specific to the location and cultural values of each project and
ultimately create an integral sustainability.
FLEX - Derived from a programmatic interpretation that re-thinks
building mission, function and performance in office buildings,
education, cultural institutions. FXFOWLE's process begins with
finding the values of the institution, identifying its community,
and then working to embody this in the architecture. The design
achieves this through form finding, envisioning new types of
interior circulation that encourages particular kinds of
interactions, and creating gathering spaces that are fine tailored
to the institution. The architecture sets the stage for
interactions of the community and ultimately works to develop a new
relationship between the individual and the institution

Volume 18 of Martin Heidegger's collected works presents his
important 1924 Marburg lectures which anticipate much of the
revolutionary thinking that he subsequently articulated in Being
and Time. Here are the seeds of the ideas that would become
Heidegger's unique phenomenology. Heidegger interprets Aristotle's
Rhetoric and looks closely at the Greek notion of pathos. These
lectures offer special insight into the development of his concepts
of care and concern, being-at-hand, being-in-the-world, and
attunement, which were later elaborated in Being and Time.
Available in English for the first time, they make a significant
contribution to ancient philosophy, Aristotle studies, Continental
philosophy, and phenomenology.

With Orphans, Ben Tanzer continues his ongoing literary survey of
the twenty-first-century male psyche, yet does so with a newfound
twist, contemporary themes set in a world that is anything but. In
this dystopian tale of a future Chicago, workers are sent off to
sell property on Mars to those who can afford to leave, leaving
what's left to those who have little choice but to make do with
what's left behind: burnt out neighborhoods, black helicopters
policing the streets, flash mobs, the unemployed in their scruffy
suits, robots taking the few jobs that remain, and clones who
replace those workers who do find work so that a modicum of family
stability can be maintained. It is a story about the impact of work
on family. How work warps our best intentions. And how everything
we think we know about ourselves looks different during a
recession. This idea is writ large in the world of Orphans, where
recession is all we know, work is only available to the lucky few,
and this lucky few not only need to fear being replaced on the job,
but in their homes and beds. It is also a story about drugs,
surfing, punk music, lost youth, parenting, sex, pop culture as
vernacular, and a conscious intersection of Death of a Salesman or
Glengarry Glen Ross with the Martian Chronicles. Looking to the
genre of science fiction has allowed Tanzer to produce something
new and fresh, expanding both his literary horizons, and the
potential market for his work. Tanzer also looks to the story of
Bartleby the Scrivener with Orphans, and the question of what are
we allowed as workers, and expected to be, or do, when work is
fraught with desperation. Ultimately, Orphans is intended to be a
contemporary story about manhood and what it means in today's
world, told from the perspective of work and family, and how any of
us manage the parameters that family and work produce; but it's a
story told in a futuristic world, where our greatest fears are in
fact already realized, because there isn't enough of anything, and
we are all too easily replaced.
rechtfertigen. Dies gilt in besonderem MaBe fur das Schliifenbein,
