James Blasingame, Kathleen Deakin, Laura A. Walsh
R1,822 Discovery Miles 18 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Inspired by a vivid dream, Stephenie Meyer, a stay-at-home mom, wrote a manuscript that started a worldwide sensation that has yet to abate. In 2005 her debut novel, Twilight, crashed onto the shore of teen literature like a literary tsunami. Four books later, she had become the top-selling author in the world. When the final book in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn, was released in 2008, more than a million copies were sold on the first day alone. The popular culture phenomenon of Stephenie Meyer and her writing is much more than the sum total of her weeks on the bestseller list, however. Stephenie Meyer: In the Twilight looks at the life and work of this author, beginning with her childhood and covering her teen years and life before stardom. This volume also profiles Meyer's world since becoming a cultural icon. In addition to discussing Meyer's writing style, the chapters also explore each of her books, with a final chapter focusing on her presence in social media and public events. As young and old continue to devour her every word, this volume puts into perspective the work and impact that Meyer has around the world. Stephenie Meyer: In the Twilight will be of interest to teachers and librarians, as well as to middle and high school students-not to mention adults-who are interested in learning more about their favorite author.

Cardiovascular Physiology in the Genetically Engineered Mouse (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2002): Brian D. Hoit, Richard A. Walsh Cardiovascular Physiology in the Genetically Engineered Mouse (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2002)
Brian D. Hoit, Richard A. Walsh
R4,591 Discovery Miles 45 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The enormous advances in molecular biology and genetics coupled with the progress in instrumentation and surgical techniques have produced a voluminous and often bewildering quantity of data. The primary objective of a second edition of Cardiovascular Physiology in the Genetically Engineered Mouse is to interpret critically the literature and to provide a framework for the enormous amount of information in this burgeoning field. As in the first edition, the monograph serves as a practical guide for the investigator interested in the functional methods used to characterize the murine cardiovascular phenotype. The monograph is organized into three parts. The first deals with principles of transgenesis and homologous recombination. The second part, which again is the largest, discusses the various techniques used to assess the cardiovascular mechanical, metabolic, and electrophysiologic phenotype. This section is organized in a hierarchical manner- i.e. from isolated myocyte to isolated heart to the intact, anesthetized and conscious mouse. The third part examines techniques used to evaluate murine smooth muscle function, genetic mouse models of hypertrophy and heart failure, and the methods to assess the cardiovascular phenotype in the developing mouse embryo. In addition, newer methods that push the envelope', such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), and computed tomography (microCT) are discussed. Expanded and updated, each chapter is richly enhanced with original tables and figures, and in many cases, extensively rewritten when compared with the first edition. An essential and enduring goal of this second edition isto continue to facilitate interactions between the basic science disciplines and help bridge the gap between molecular biology and physiology.

The Forensic Anthropology Laboratory (Hardcover): Michael W. Warren, Heather A. Walsh-Haney, Laurel Freas The Forensic Anthropology Laboratory (Hardcover)
Michael W. Warren, Heather A. Walsh-Haney, Laurel Freas
R4,931 Discovery Miles 49 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Presenting a rare glimpse into the various laboratories that involve forensic anthropology, The Forensic Anthropology Laboratory reveals the ways in which anthropologists document, process, and collect data for academic research and practical and legal applications, including time of death, trauma analyses, and the identification of unknown human remains. Drawing from a wide range of sources, the book begins with detailed descriptions of how body donations are received and processed. It includes extraordinary photos documenting the steps taken to ensure that each body part is tracked from the moment it is received through the decomposition and skeletonization processes. Dr. David Hunt, of the Smithsonian Institution, discusses destructive analysis, diagnostic imaging, casting, and all types of anthroposcopic and anthropometric data collection methods. The book also compares the duties of full-time forensic anthropologists in a medical examiner's office with their academic counterparts, discussing staffing, physical plant concerns, field recovery procedures, and laboratory processing. It stresses the variety of required skills, including fingerprinting and other trace evidence procedures, and highlights casework examples from FACES, illustrating the technology used to establish identifications through facial reconstruction, photographic superimposition, and age progression. Using examples from the World Trade Center, Hurricane Katrina, and the Asian Tsunami disasters, the book examines the roles of forensic anthropologists and pathologists as mass fatality responders. It discusses practical issues and explains how and where the mobile disaster morgue can be used, including morgue floor plans and equipment. A one-of-a-kind survey of a variety of forensic anthropology laboratories, the editors provide an insider's view of functioning laboratories as reported by some of the most respected and prolific anthropologists in clinical, research, and academic settings.

Bridget A. Walsh, Jennifer A. Mortensen
R1,638 Discovery Miles 16 380 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Research on home visiting shows that Early Head Start (EHS) home-based programs benefit from additional training and resources that streamline philosophy and content. In this essential guide, Walsh and Mortensen propose that alignment with Family Life Education's (FLE) strengths-based methodology results in greater consistency through a model of prevention, education, and collaboration with families. This text is the first to outline linkages between FLE and EHS home visiting. It explores a qualitative study of FLE integrated in a current EHS home-based program and application of FLE methodology to home visiting topics. This approach will influence professional practice and provide a foundation for developing evidence-based home visiting practices. Online content accompanies the text, with videos demonstrating the FLE approach in action and discussion questions to encourage engagement with and understanding of the core material. Transforming Early Head Start Home Visiting: A Family Life Education Approach is essential reading for upper-level undergraduate and masters students in family studies and early childhood education, as well as practitioners working with children and families.

Surgery of the Ureter (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1975): R. Kuss Surgery of the Ureter (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1975)
R. Kuss; Translated by A. Walsh; C Chatelain
R2,905 Discovery Miles 29 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There has been great progress in ureteral surgery in the last twenty years. The predominant indication is still calculous obstruction but reparative and plastic surgery of the ureter for congenital and acquired lesions are among the most interesting advances in modern urology. The essential goal of this surgery is to ensure free flow of the urine from the kidney to the bladder and so to preserve or improve kidney function which is always affected or threatened by any defect in the excretory pathway. The ideal is to re-establish a closed circuit flow from kidney to bladder by repair or substitution of the ureteral conduit so as to avoid as far as possible the dis abilities that result from diversion of the urine to the skin surface or to the intestine. This objective can now be achieved in the treatment of most of the diseases of the ureter when the relevant kidney is sufficiently healthy to merit conserva tion. The techniques used are not necessarily new but the advent of antibiotics has made it possible to avoid or reduce the risks of infection, pyelonephritis, or pyonephrosis that so often complicated such surgery in earlier times. Progress in the investigation of renal function and of the excretory tract has brought a better understanding of the physio-pathology of the urinary apparatus and more accurate judgement of the results of reparative surgery."

Ugo Foscolo's Tragic Vision in Italy and England (Hardcover): Rachel A. Walsh Ugo Foscolo's Tragic Vision in Italy and England (Hardcover)
Rachel A. Walsh
R2,179 Discovery Miles 21 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

One of the most celebrated Italian writers of the early Romantic period, Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827) was known primarily as a novelist, a poet, and a nationalist. Following the Napoleonic Wars, he lived in self-exile in England during the last decade of his life. There he wrote numerous critical essays and collaborated with Lord Byron and other well-known members of English literary circles. Ugo Foscolo's Tragic Vision in Italy and England examines an underexplored aspect of Foscolo's literary career: his tragic plays and critical essays on that genre. Rachel A. Walsh argues that for Foscolo tragedy was more than another genre in which to exercise his literary ambitions. It was the medium for an elaborate life-long process of self-examination and engagement with political and literary conflict. By analysing Foscolo's tragic struggles on and off the stage, Walsh sheds new light on his career and how it reflects on the important literary and political trends of the time.

Empowering Students as Questioners - Skills, Strategies, and Structures to Realize the Potential of Every Learner (Paperback):... Empowering Students as Questioners - Skills, Strategies, and Structures to Realize the Potential of Every Learner (Paperback)
Jackie A. Walsh
R989 Discovery Miles 9 890 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Create environments where students ask questions, not just answer them! When students become questioners, learning improves for all. Yet, even though research has repeatedly shown that student questioning increases ownership of learning and narrows opportunity gaps, studies show that students ask less than five percent of the questions in classrooms today. How do you turn this teacher-centric dynamic around? In this book by bestselling author and education expert Jackie Walsh, the author shifts the focus to student-centric learning and how to develop student questioning strategies, including self-questions, academic questions, exploratory questions, and dialogic questions. Other highlights include: * Vignettes of quality questioning in action in various grade-level and content-area classrooms * Examples of how to use questioning to harness the power of formative assessment and create a culture of inquiry * Student questioning models for distance learning By instilling students with the desire and ability to become better questioners, teachers will see more actively engaged students, more collaboration, and an increase in overall student motivation for learning and achievement.
