In Defense of Decadent Europe (Hardcover): Alan Rosenthal In Defense of Decadent Europe (Hardcover)
Alan Rosenthal
R4,216 Discovery Miles 42 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Raymond Aron's In Defense of Decadent Europe was first conceived at a time of great uncertainty for the Western democracies. The postwar economic boom had been interrupted by "stagflation," while communist and socialist parties in Italy and France were powerful factors in Europe's political landscape. Aron's book has a threefold purpose: the analysis of the Soviet Russian regime and its Marxist-Leninist theoretical foundation; the detailed empirical comparison between liberal democracies and collectivist regimes of the East; and, above all, the exploration of what might be termed the "problem" of democracy the tendency of democratic regimes to undermine themselves unless checked in their most extreme tendencies. Aron denounces the clash between democracy and the Marxist-Leninist mystification and explains how Marxism leads to Soviet-style ideology. The second part of the book constitutes a defense of liberal Europe. The author makes comparisons in terms of productivity, technical innovation, living standards, scientific progress, and human freedom. But Aron also notes there are important ways in which the West must put her house in order by cultivating authority in the church, in universities, in business, and even in the army. This paradox is conveyed by the title of the book, the juxtaposition of the words In Defense of and Decadent Europe. In the new introduction, Daniel Mahoney and Brian Anderson discuss the disenchanted conservative liberalism of Raymond Aron that set him apart. Among the topics they cover are: the challenge of ideocracy, the decadence of democracy, and Aron as a civic philosopher. In Defense of Decadent Europe combines ideological debate with economic and social analysis. Its thorough examination of Western freedom versus the Eastern communism of the recent past extends well beyond parochial debates into a basic vision of Western societies. The book will be compelling for historians, political scientists, economists, and philosophers.

The Documentary Diaries - Working Experiences of a Non-Fiction Filmmaker (Hardcover): Alan Rosenthal The Documentary Diaries - Working Experiences of a Non-Fiction Filmmaker (Hardcover)
Alan Rosenthal
R2,343 Discovery Miles 23 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How do you make a successful documentary in an era of media turmoil, network disruption and increasing financial restrictions? This is the question Alan Rosenthal, distinguished international filmmaker and teacher, sets out to answer in The documentary diaries. Using seven of his recent releases as case studies - ranging from high-budget historical and political documentaries to shoestring observational films and hybrid docudramas - he explores with style and humour the challenges facing the contemporary documentarian, and demonstrates how they can be overcome. Numerous aspects of film production are examined, notably proposal and script writing, fund raising, managing co-productions, dealing with commissioning editors and choosing distributors. Additional mini-chapters provide extra perspective on key topics, and the book is completed by a wealth of supplementary material, including excerpts from script drafts, variations on proposals and discussions of marketing strategies. The documentary diaries offers piercing insights into the world of documentary filmmaking, and will be essential reading for students and professionals alike. -- .

New Challenges for Documentary (Paperback, 2nd edition): Alan Rosenthal, John Corner New Challenges for Documentary (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Alan Rosenthal, John Corner; Index compiled by Martin Hargreaves
R661 Discovery Miles 6 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first edition of New challenges for documentary provided a major stimulus for teaching about documentary film and television and fresh encouragement for critical thinking about practice. This second edition brings together many new contributions both from academics and filmmakers, reflecting shifts both in documentary production itself, and in ways of discussing it. Once again, the emphasis has been on clear and provocative writing, sympathetic to the practical challenges of documentary film-making but making connections with a range of work in media and communications analysis. With its wide range of contributors and the international scope of its agenda, New challenges for documentary will be essential reading for general filmmakers and documentary students both of academic and practical inclinations. -- .

The Best Job in Politics - Exploring How Governors Succeed as Policy Leaders (Paperback, Revised ed.): Alan Rosenthal The Best Job in Politics - Exploring How Governors Succeed as Policy Leaders (Paperback, Revised ed.)
Alan Rosenthal
R2,032 Discovery Miles 20 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"My worst day as governor was better than my best day as a United States senator." -Former Governor Tim Carper (D-DE, 1993-2001) Governors-both in, and now out of, office-see the job as the best in politics. Why is that? Drawing on a survey of former governors, personal interviews, as well as gubernatorial memoirs and biographies, Rosenthal shows students how and why governors succeed as policy leaders and makes a case as to why some governors are better at leveraging the institutional advantages of the office.

Engines of Democracy - Politics and Policymaking in State Legislatures (Paperback, Revised edition): Alan Rosenthal Engines of Democracy - Politics and Policymaking in State Legislatures (Paperback, Revised edition)
Alan Rosenthal
R3,100 Discovery Miles 31 000 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

State legislators have often been in the shadow of their national counterparts, but they drive the processes of democracy. Rosenthal brings together a lifetime of research and experience on state legislative politics into one eminently readable volume-a dynamic, inside view of the people involved, the politics that prevail, and the interest groups and lobbyists who advocate their causes. Building on earlier work with new data and recent interviews and observations, Rosenthal looks at the way representation works, Americans' critical view of their legislatures, the role of legislative leaders, the dynamics of executive-legislative relationships, as well as norms and ethics. Both a complement and contrast to the policymaking process on Capitol Hill, Engines of Democracy proves that no one gives insight into state legislators and their work the way Alan Rosenthal can.

Republic on Trial - The Case for Representative Democracy (Paperback, Revised ed.): Alan Rosenthal, Burdett A Loomis, John... Republic on Trial - The Case for Representative Democracy (Paperback, Revised ed.)
Alan Rosenthal, Burdett A Loomis, John Hibbing, Karl T Kurtz
R2,230 Discovery Miles 22 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Despite all the arguing from politicians, special interests, and political parties, Americans basically agree on the most important political issues. If only our legislators would stop fighting over obtuse policy details and really listen to what ordinary Americans want, representatives on Capitol Hill and in the statehouses would actually get something done, right? Wrong. Americans perceive consensus when in reality there is none. The fact of the matter is Americans not only disagree on the most significant challenges facing the country, but also conflict on what to do about them. On issue after issue-crime, Social Security, homosexual rights, military intervention, abortion-the American public is deeply divided over the proper course of action. Yet our system is not flawed by this division; democracy is necessarily complex and contentious. In truth, without these messy and chaotic features of governance, our system would not be working as the Founders envisioned. In lucid and lively prose, the authors lay out criteria with which to assess our representative system. By showing students what democracy entails in practice-the in's and out's of legislators actually doing their jobs-they will come to see that uncertainty, competing interests, confusion, bargaining, compromise, and conflict are central to the proper functioning of our democracy.

The Third House - Lobbyists and Lobbying in the States (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Alan Rosenthal The Third House - Lobbyists and Lobbying in the States (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Alan Rosenthal
R3,065 Discovery Miles 30 650 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book, which has drawn praise for its inviting and accessible style, thoroughly examines the lobbying scene: the settings in which lobbying takes place, the types and styles of lobbyists, the broad range of approaches and techniques used by lobbyists, and the role and influence of lobbying in our system of representative democracy. A favorite among professors and students alike, The Third House is a great choice as a supplement for courses on state politics or interest groups.

Alan Rosenthal
R2,264 Discovery Miles 22 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Based on the author's first-hand observation of legislatures and extensive interviews conducted for this book, The Decline of Representative Democracy describes and analyzes the contemporary state of legislatures and the legislative process. Rosenthal explores many topics including: the shifting bases of representation, the development and transformation of legislative cultures, the competition for control, the role of interest groups, the lawmaking process, the job of leadership, and the balance of power between the governor and the legislature.

Heavy Lifting - The Job of the American Legislature (Paperback, Revised ed.): Alan Rosenthal Heavy Lifting - The Job of the American Legislature (Paperback, Revised ed.)
Alan Rosenthal
R3,065 Discovery Miles 30 650 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What makes for a "good" legislature? In Heavy Lifting, Alan Rosenthal traveled to five states, interviewing and shadowing legislators to find out the answer. Through this engaging narrative, the author first establishes the most important aspects of American state legislatures--what they are and how they do their jobs--and then graduates to the book's central thesis: Rosenthal argues that, on the whole, the American legislature must be evaluated on the basis of its processes, not its products. He breaks down the legislative process into three principal functions: representing, lawmaking, and balancing the executive, and covers each in turn in the remainder of the book.
