This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant
and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two
intertwining love stories - that of young dreamers Orpheus and
Eurydice, and of immortal King Hades and Lady Persephone -
Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the
underworld and back. Inspired by traditions of classic American
folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Mitchell's beguiling
sung-through musical pits industry against nature, doubt against
faith, and fear against love.

In Derrida, Myth and the Impossibility of Philosophy, Anais N.
Spitzer shows that philosophy cannot separate itself from myth
since myth is an inevitable condition of the possibility of
philosophy. Bombarded by narratives that terrorize and repress, we
may often consider myth to be constrictive dogma or, at best,
something to be readily disregarded as unphilosophical and
irrelevant. However, such dismissals miss a crucial aspect of myth.
Harnessing the insights of Jacques Derrida's deconstruction and
Mark C. Taylor's philosophical reading of complexity theory,
Derrida, Myth and the Impossibility of Philosophy provocatively
reframes the pivotal relation of myth to thinking and to
philosophy, demonstrating that myth's inherent ambiguity engenders
vital and inescapable deconstructive propensities. Exploring myth's
disruptive presence, Spitzer shows that philosophy cannot separate
itself from myth. Instead, myth is an inevitable condition of the
possibility of philosophy. This study provides a nuanced account of
myth in the postmodern era, not only laying out the deconstructive
underpinnings of myth in philosophy and religion, but establishing
the very necessity of myth in the study of ideas.
Offering an original discussion of the gentrification phenomenon in
Europe, this book provides new theoretical insights into classical
works on the subject. Using a thorough analysis of the diversity of
the forms, places and actors of gentrification in an attempt to
isolate its 'DNA', the book addresses the place of social groups in
cities, their competition over the appropriation of space, the
infrastructure unequally offered to them by economic and political
actors and the stakes of everyday social relationships.
This volume sheds light on the argumentative role of metaphor in
climate change discourse, unpacking the ways in which stakeholders
use specific metaphors to influence perceptions of the climate
crisis. While existing research has explored the explanatory
function of metaphors in communication on climate change, this book
offers an alternative view, one which posits that metaphors can go
beyond disseminating scientific observations to promoting biases in
the depiction of these observations. Auge analyses oft-used ideas
in climate change communication, such as carbon footprint, drawn
from a wide-ranging corpus spanning media discourse, scientific
discourse, NGO communications, political speech, and everyday
speech in English. The book presents an overview of different
arguments conveyed through metaphors around five key themes-climate
change mitigation; the evolution of climate change; global and
local effects; the significance of climate change in specific
countries; and the relationship between climate change and other
contemporary social issues. The volume highlights how the
complexity of climate change often necessitates the use of metaphor
and the value of further research on metaphor's argumentative
function in elucidating its ideological dimensions in climate
change discourse. This book will be of interest to scholars in
discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and
environmental communication.
This book provides an in-depth account of military operations
against drug gangs and organizations in two of the biggest
countries in Latin America: Brazil and Mexico. Recent studies on
drug wars have detailed case studies on the war on drugs but do not
focus on the role of the army in such policies. Publications that
do drive attention to the military in such situations are usually
from human rights organizations or the press and are therefore not
scholarly works. There are therefore no recent academic books
dealing with the role of the military in the fight against drugs in
Latin America. This book aims to fill this gap. It also offers an
empirical and theoretical examination of the issue of the role of
the military (rather than the police) on national soil-the army
being generally devoted to interventions abroad, and the police, to
law enforcement on the national ground. The book is also the first
work to look at high-level negotiations between military and
civilian elites that define the conditions for the use of force
during military operations. It provides a theoretically informed
understanding of contemporary security politics in Brazil and
Mexico.
Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq), which maps the
genome-wide localization patterns of transcription factors and
epigenetic marks, is among the most widely used methods in
molecular biology. Practical Guide to ChIP-seq Data Analysis will
guide readers through the steps of ChIP-seq analysis: from quality
control, through peak calling, to downstream analyses. It will help
experimental biologists to design their ChIP-seq experiments with
the analysis in mind, and to perform the basic analysis steps
themselves. It also aims to support bioinformaticians to understand
how the data is generated, what the sources of biases are, and
which methods are appropriate for different analyses.
This volume, which gathers contributions presented at the annual
conferences of l'Association pour le developpement de l'histoire
culturelle (ADHC), questions the subjects and boundaries of
cultural history in France - with regard to neighboring approaches
such as cultural studies, media studies, and gender studies - to
elaborate a "social history of representations." Historians,
philosophers and sociologists address a large variety of topics and
methodological proposals. Definitions, objects and actors, memories
and cultural transfers: this book depicts the major questions that
underlie the historical debate at the beginning of the 21st
century.

In Delta of Venus Anais Nin penned a lush, magical world where the
characters of her imagination possess the most universal of desires
and exceptional of talents. Among these provocative stories, a
Hungarian adventurer seduces wealthy women then vanishes
with their money; a veiled woman selects strangers from a chic
restaurant for private trysts; and a Parisian hatmaker named
Mathilde leaves her husband for the opium dens of Peru. This is an
extraordinarily rich and exotic collection from the master of
erotic writing.
Anais Nin (1903-1977) was born in Paris and aspired at an early age
to be a writer. An influential artist and thinker, she was the
author of several novels, short stories, critical studies, a
collection of essays, two volumes of erotica, and nine published
volumes of her Diary.
