Miguel Angel Del Arco Blanco, Peter Anderson
R3,450 Discovery Miles 34 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At least 200,000 people died from hunger or malnutrition-related diseases in Spain during the 1940s. This book provides a political explanation for the famine and brings together a broad range of academics based in Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia to achieve this. Topics include the political causes of the famine, the physical and social consequences, the ways Spaniards tried to survive, the regime's reluctance to accept international relief, the politics of cooking at a time of famine, and the memory of the famine. The volume challenges the silence and misrepresentation that still surround the famine. It reveals the reality of how people perished in Spain because the Francoist authorities instituted a policy of food self-sufficiency (or autarky): a system of price regulation which placed restrictions on transport as well as food sales. The contributors trace the massive decline in food production which followed, the hoarding which took place on an enormous scale and the vast and deeply iniquitous black market that subsequently flourished at a time when salaries plunged to 50% below their levels in 1936: all contributing factors in the large-scale atrocity explored fully here for the first time.

Angel Arcos-Vargas
R3,803 Discovery Miles 38 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the part that electric vehicles can play in reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Further, it explains the impact of public support, technological advances, lower costs and better battery performance in making electric vehicles a viable alternative. The book begins by analyzing the international context of electric vehicles and how they are being developed in different countries, and by offering a forecast of the electricity demand they may create. It then discusses technological innovations in electric vehicle recharging systems. The book is concerned not only with the economic potential of electric vehicles, but also with environmental aspects; consequently, it examines the raw materials supply chain and performs a lifecycle assessment. The book concludes with a chapter on alternative energies in transport, which may also help to facilitate the energy transition. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable resource for researchers, graduate students, policymakers and industry professionals interested in the energy transition and transport.

Routledge Handbook of Disinformation and National Security: RubĂŠn Arcos, Irena Chiru, Cristina Ivan Routledge Handbook of Disinformation and National Security
RubĂŠn Arcos, Irena Chiru, Cristina Ivan
R7,051 Discovery Miles 70 510 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This interdisciplinary Handbook provides an in-depth analysis of the complex security phenomenon of disinformation and offers a toolkit to counter such tactics. Disinformation used to propagate false, inexact or out of context information is today a frequently used tool of political manipulation and information warfare, both online and offline. This Handbook evidences a historical thread of continuing practices and modus operandi in overt state propaganda and covert information operations. Further, it attempts to unveil current methods used by propaganda actors, the inherent vulnerabilities they exploit in the fabric of democratic societies and, last but not least, to highlight current practices in countering disinformation and building resilient audiences. The Handbook is divided into six thematic sections. The first part provides a set of theoretical approaches to hostile influencing, disinformation and covert information operations. The second part looks at disinformation and propaganda in historical perspective offering case study analysis of disinformation, and the third focuses on providing understanding of the contemporary challenges posed by disinformation and hostile influencing. The fourth part examines information and communication practices used for countering disinformation and building resilience. The fifth part analyses specific regional experiences in countering and deterring disinformation, as well as international policy responses from transnational institutions and security practitioners. Finally, the sixth part offers a practical toolkit for practitioners to counter disinformation and hostile influencing. This handbook will be of much interest to students of national security, propaganda studies, media and communications studies, intelligence studies and International Relations in general.

Chemical Induction of Cancer - Modulation and Combination Effects an Inventory of the Many Factors which Influence... Chemical Induction of Cancer - Modulation and Combination Effects an Inventory of the Many Factors which Influence Carcinogenesis (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
Joseph C. Arcos, Mary F. Argus, Yin-tak Woo
R3,514 Discovery Miles 35 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the approach to the analysis of disease, including, of course, cancer, two major thrusts may be distinguished. These may be referred to, in shorthand, as agents and processes: the causative agents (chemical, microbial, physical, environmental, and psychosocial) and the organismic processes, initiated and furthered by the agents, culminating in observable pathology (at the macromolecular, cytological, histological, organ function, locomotor, and behavioral levels). The past 25 years, since the appearance of the first volume of the predecessor series (1) authored by the Editors of this present volume, have seen an impressive number of studies on chemicals (and other agents) as etiologic factors in the induction of cancer. The major emphasis has been on the discovery of many chemical carcinogens of widely different structures, their metabolism by various tissues and cells, and, in turn, their molecular-biochemical effects on the cells. This rapidly expanded body of information, as effectively covered in the predecessor volumes, is an excellent entree to the second half of the overall problem of chemical carcinogenesis, the processes. The active agents trigger a large array of molecular-biochemical alterations to which the target cells, target tissues, and target organisms respond in many select and common ways. This second major aspect of the induction of cancer by chemicals (and by other agents)- the sequence of cellular and tissue changes clearly relevant to cancer-remains the challenge for the future.

Alejandro Quiroga, Miguel Angel Del Arco Blanco
R5,024 Discovery Miles 50 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Right-Wing Spain in the Civil War Era explores the lives of the leading Spanish conservatives in the turbulent period 1914-1945. The volume is a collection of biographies of the most important figures of the Spanish Right during the last years of the Restoration (1914-1923), the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera (1923-1930), the Second Republic (1931-1936), the Civil War (1936-39) and the early years of the Franco regime (1939-45). This book brings together a number of leading historians of twentieth-century Spain. By adopting a biographical approach, the volume aims at providing a new insight of the origins, development and aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. Contrary to the traditional view, Right-Wing Spain in the Civil War Era shows a diverse and fragmented Spanish right which, far from being isolated, was profoundly influenced by German Nazism, Italian Fascism and French Traditionalism. This remarkable and innovative collection of essays will be welcomed by students and lecturers of Spanish history alike.

Miguel Ángel del Arco Blanco
R4,584 Discovery Miles 45 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), crosses began to appear to commemorate the fallen killed in violence behind the lines. They commemorated the those who, according to the rebels’ propaganda, had given their lives ‘for God and for Spain’ In July 2021 the Spanish Government finally approved a new ‘bill of democratic memory’ in which, at last, the Francoist legacy of the monuments to the fallen is addressed The work follows the path opened by other works on war memorials, the politics of memory and the social memory of society in 20th century Europe

The Art of Intelligence - Simulations, Exercises, and Games (Paperback): William J. Lahneman, Ruben Arcos The Art of Intelligence - Simulations, Exercises, and Games (Paperback)
William J. Lahneman, Ruben Arcos
R1,793 Discovery Miles 17 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the 9/11 attacks, the number of intelligence courses and related curricula have soared. Many instructors look for interactive learning tools because they add immeasurable value to the student's understanding of the intelligence enterprise. Such tools, however, take time and effort to develop and are not circulated among faculty. This is the first textbook to offer in one volume original simulations, exercises, and games designed by academics and intelligence professionals from several countries. These innovative methods are meant to enhance the learning experience and provide an international perspective to the topics and approaches discussed in class. Intelligence simulations and games are presented in ready-to run formats, from easy instructions to result recordings matrices, to minimize preparation time for both instructors and students. Exercises, such as cyber attack simulation, information sharing, ethical scenarios and more, expose the student to the many subtle aspects of the intelligence enterprise through active role-playing in simulations and game exercises. The cases cover a wide range of key analytical issues and contexts with an international focus for an innovative text that will suit intelligence training courses at all levels.

Secret Identities (Hardcover): Andrew Dell'arco Secret Identities (Hardcover)
Andrew Dell'arco
R470 Discovery Miles 4 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The water tower stood brooding over the cemetery in East Arcadia as if it resented what had transpired, without its permission, beneath it. Here Harley had lost his mask and his symbolic identity, and by extension, mine as well, thereby beginning our fool's errand of retrieval. And just beyond the bend of the horizon stood the skeletal remains of the Way Keepers Spiritual Center, where our odyssey had ended in an all-too-literal trial by fire. Surrounded by immutable reminders of our journey, it struck me that I had been guilty, as Harley had pointed out, of safely observing rather than taking an active part in the world around me. Harley had accused me of bench-warming my way through life at the masque in Atlantic City. "You gotta get out there and see the world," he said, "not just read about it." Harley's easy smile hadn't changed since kindergarten, and we had been inseparable since. Our third grade teacher called us the Dynamic Duo, though I later thought the Odd Couple made more sense-Harley the extroverted white athlete and I the introverted black bookworm-but I had been grateful for her convenient color blindness, and for her open-minded acceptance, something sadly lacking in our classmates from the largely-white, conformist suburb of Arcadia.

Biotechnology is one of the most important new issues to emerge in the knowledge economy. The Politics of Biotechnology in North America and Europe provides analysts with a perspective on policy-making in scientifically advanced countries that integrate the insights of several approaches and that display a particular sensitivity to the complexity of policy-making conjectures. This perspective allows going beyond the simplistic understandings of biotechnology policy currently prevailing. This volume provides a rigorous analysis and detailed information on biotechnology policy in nine countries. The essays included here present the results of in-depth empirical research in the area of biomedicine and agro-food biotechnology. The book is, therefore, not only of interest to policy-makers and policy analysts, but also to anyone with an interest in biotechnology.

Marleen Brans, Arco Timmermans
R1,711 Discovery Miles 17 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This open access book centres on the advisory roles of political scientists in Europe. Based on a cross-national survey, the book offers a comparative analysis of the viewpoints and activities of university-based political scientists on external engagement. Political scientists in Europe appear more extrovert as academics than sometimes thought. In their professional functioning they engage in delivering knowledge and advice to all kinds of stakeholders in the policy process. This volume contains twelve in-depth country studies where different trends are visible, from political regime change to pressure for impact of academic work. The findings from this comparative analysis may inform our orientation on interaction between academics and their social and political environment, and what this means for education and training in university programs in political science.

Arco I. Timmermans
R1,158 Discovery Miles 11 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This title was first published in 2003.This informative text deals with the emergence of coalition agreements, their contents, the problem of enforcement and with the question of whether or not the functions are performed in practice. It explores the idea that policy bargaining in government formation is not just an isolated process, but that it is a real chance for parties to deal with substantive and controversial issues at an early stage. The coalition agreements in which these issues are incorporated have become important in most multiparty systems, but they have received little attention in political science research. This book argues that more systematic attention for these institutional variables is highly useful in coalition research because it helps to explain processes and outcome in coalition politics.

Peter Anderson, Miguel Angel Del Arco Blanco
R2,045 Discovery Miles 20 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Historians have only recently established the scale of the violence carried out by the supporters of General Franco during and after the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. An estimated 88,000 unidentified victims of Francoist violence remain to be exhumed from mass graves and given a dignified burial, and for decades, the history of these victims has also been buried. This volume brings together a range of Spanish and British specialists who offer an original and challenging overview of this violence. Contributors not only examine the mass killings and incarcerations, but also carefully consider how the repression carried out in the government zone during the Civil War - long misrepresented in Francoist accounts - seeped into everyday life. A final section explores ways of facing Spain's recent violent past.
