U.S. International Competitiveness - Evolution or Revolution? (Hardcover): John C. Hilke, Philip B. Nelson U.S. International Competitiveness - Evolution or Revolution? (Hardcover)
John C. Hilke, Philip B. Nelson
R2,696 Discovery Miles 26 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"U.S. International CompetitivenesS" challenges the common assertions concerning causes of America's growing trade deficit. The authors' unique empirical analysis of industry specific trade flows using numerous explanatory variables provides a vigorous test of the view that deficit growth is primarily due to unfair foreign trade practices, overzealous antitrust laws, slack U.S. management, and other microeconomic factors. Their conclusions on the actual culprits offer a sobering reassessment of current and proposed trade policies. American and foreign public policy makers, as well as trade and industrial organization scholars, will find this volume to be enlightening and provocative reading.

The first two chapters establish the parameters and theoretical background for the study. The authors then review the microeconomic explanations for sudden trade deficit growth, identify industry characteristics included in the study, and specify the model to be tested. Turning to an examination of the empirical results, they initially look at whether changes in industry characteristics over time could have increased the deficit. They then highlight microeconomic explanations for changes in the U.S. trade balance. Concluding chapters present detailed case studies of particular industries as well as the policy implications to be drawn from the study.

The Making of the Modern State - A Theoretical Evolution (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): B. Nelson The Making of the Modern State - A Theoretical Evolution (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
B. Nelson
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nelson provides a historical overview of the theoretical and ideological evolution of the modern state, from pre-state and pre-modern state formations to the present. Major themes and key thinkers are treated in some depth and specificity. At the same time, structural changes, both socio-economic and political, underlying shifts in state consciousness are emphasized. The link between state ideologies of legitimation and forms of political consciousness is stressed, including those theoretical forms of consciousness characteristic of modern social and political science. A major theme of the book is the need to understand the modern state holistically, as a totality of social, political, and ideological factors.

Sabotage in the Arctic (Hardcover): Stewart B. Nelson Sabotage in the Arctic (Hardcover)
Stewart B. Nelson
R801 Discovery Miles 8 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The story of Australian-born Sir Hubert Wilkins and the Nautilus is usually a brief footnote, if mentioned at all, of Arctic exploration history. However, it is a tale of daring enterprise and of men captivated by the pursuit of noble deeds. Having leased and extensively modified a decommissioned vintage World War I U.S. Navy submarine, the Wilkins-Ellsworth Trans Arctic Submarine Expedition of 1931 was marked by controversy from its inception. Many considered it a huge publicity stunt, especially the planned rendezvous at the North Pole with the German airship Graf Zeppelin. The Nautilus did make it into the Arctic but suspected sabotage ended Sir Hubert's quest to be the first to use a submarine to cross the Arctic Ocean by way of the North Pole. An oceanographer, historian and author, Dr. Nelson is a Fellow of the Marine Technology Society, a member of the Explorers Club and the former president of the American Oceanic Organization.

Bob B Nelson
R800 Discovery Miles 8 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book contains a clear message: Every boss wants an effective worker to do what most needs to be done without having to be asked. Simple? Perhaps. Easy? Not on your life. But thanks to Bob Nelson, employers and employees everywhere will be empowered by this vital message, and in the process achieve their goals and create a mutually rewarding experience.

As brief, to the point, and inspiring as his previous best-selling titles, Nelson's commonsense advice can be applied to any situation, from the mailroom to the boardroom, and is illustrated with a wide array of examples and anecdotes from real life, such as:

When Amy's Ice Cream in Austin ran out of application forms, an employee handed each applicant an empty bag with instructions to do something creative with it. This brainstorm allowed the applicants to be creative and entertain others -- important job attributes to the company. The bags quickly became a standard part of the company's interview process.

Helping readers tap into their own intelligence, resourcefulness, and pride, Nelson demonstrates how acts of initiative both big and small can make an enormous difference in the way an employee is viewed -- and rewarded -- by his or her boss; he also shows how the effects of those actions benefit the entire organization. It's a perfect "first day on the job" book; a useful resource for any HR department; and a worthwhile investment for anyone who wants to learn more and go farther in a job, in a career, and in life.

Cicero, Politics, and the 21st Century addresses the West's current crisis of confidence. Reflecting on how the famed Roman philosopher-statesmen Marcus Tullius Cicero thought and acted in a time of great turbulence in the ancient world, this book offers lessons to 21st century students of politics and statesmen alike. Cicero's example shows that the survival of liberal democracy requires us to recover a sense of nobility in politics - a balance of power, honour, and justice with the pursuit of truth for the common good. Cicero, Politics, and the 21st Century brings the reader into the dirty politics of the late Roman Republic and tells how Cicero rose to the top in this environment. He managed to work with people who were often diametrically opposed to him, juggling different power blocks and interest groups, while trying to implement reforms, all at a time when the state apparatus and public consensus holding the Republic together were breaking down. Cicero was able to attain power, all the while maintaining his integrity and advancing the interests of his people. Additionally, Cicero and his time bring much needed perspective to our political thinking by enabling us to examine events through a prism of assumptions different from those we have inherited from the turmoil of the 20th century.

Measuring Prison Performance - Government Privatization and Accountability (Paperback, illustrated edition): Gerald G. Gaes,... Measuring Prison Performance - Government Privatization and Accountability (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Gerald G. Gaes, Scott D. Camp, Julianne B. Nelson, William G. Saylor
R990 Discovery Miles 9 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gaes and his distinguished coauthors offer a comprehensive analysis of public versus private management of prisons, a competition that originated in the 1980s with the introduction of private facilities into the criminal justice system. The authors argue that prison performance must be measured in reference to the goals of a particular prison system and introduce the technique of multilevel modeling to allow for simultaneous measurement of the individual and the institution. They also show how their analytic framework can be applied to other criminal justice components_prosecution, adjudication, postrelease supervision, policing_and to evaluating the privatization of almost any publicly administered service. They contend that the ability to meaningfully compare public and private prisons can better inform penal policy and improve prison performance and accountability. This book will be a valuable resource for public administrators and policy analysts, corrections personnel and criminologists.

Tragedy and History - The German Influence on Raymond Aron's Political Thought (Hardcover, New edition): Scott B. Nelson Tragedy and History - The German Influence on Raymond Aron's Political Thought (Hardcover, New edition)
Scott B. Nelson
R1,543 Discovery Miles 15 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This work examines the cohesion of Raymond Aron's political thought and argues that its unifying principles are to be found in certain intellectual problems he came upon early in life through his study of German thought. These problems consist of the relation between man and history, knowledge and action, and philosophy and politics. They are explored in three intertwined facets of Aron's thought - History, Sociology, and Praxeology - which are elaborated by setting Aron in dialogue with three key German thinkers: Dilthey, Marx, and Weber respectively. This work argues that the roots of Aron's political thought reach back to the 1930s and that his ongoing meditation on the philosophical problems raised at that time endure and provide the framework for his thought for the rest of his life.

Progressive Traditions - Identity in Cherokee Literature and Culture (Hardcover): Joshua B Nelson Progressive Traditions - Identity in Cherokee Literature and Culture (Hardcover)
Joshua B Nelson
R1,112 Discovery Miles 11 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

According to a dichotomy commonly found in studies of American Indians, some noble Native people defiantly defend their pristine indigenous traditions in honor of their ancestors, while others in weakness or greed surrender their culture and identities to white American economies and institutions. This traditionalist-versus-assimilationist divide is, Joshua B. Nelson argues, a false one. To make his case that American Indians rarely if ever conform to such simplistic identifications, Nelson considers the literature and culture of many Cherokee people.
Exploring a range of linked cultural practices and beliefs through the works of Cherokee thinkers and writers from the nineteenth century to today, Nelson finds ample evidence that tradition can survive through times of radical change: Cherokees do their cultural work both in progressively traditional and traditionally progressive ways. Studying individuals previously deemed either "traditional" or "assimilationist," Nelson presents a more nuanced interpretation. Among the works he examines are the political rhetoric of Elias Boudinot, a forefather of American Indian literature, and of John Ross, the principal chief during the Removal years; the understudied memoirs of Catharine Brown, a nineteenth-century Cherokee convert to Christianity; and the novel "Kholvn," by contemporary traditionalist Sequoyah Guess, a writer of peculiarly Cherokee science fiction.
Across several genres--including autobiography, fiction, speeches, laws, and letters--"Progressive Traditions" identifies an "indigenous anarchism," a pluralist, community-centered political philosophy that looks to practices that preceded and surpass the nation-state as ways of helping Cherokee people prosper. This critique of the common call for expansion of tribal nations' sovereignty over their citizens represents a profound shift in American Indian critical theory and challenges contemporary indigenous people to rethink power among nations, communities, and individuals.
