Explore interventions and treatment methods designed to help curb
the alarming trend toward violence in today's youth! Written in
jargon-free lucid prose, Psychological Trauma and the Developing
Brain: Neurologically Based Interventions for Troubled Children
specifically shows how positive early experiences enhance brain
development and how traumatic life experiences, especially child
abuse and neglect, can affect a child's brain and behavior. Through
carefully selected case studies, the book offers basic principles
of treatment and a broad range of interventions that target the
multiple symptoms and problems seen in children with a history of
childhood trauma. Offering a new psychobiological model of child
development, this book incorporates the influence of both genes and
the environment and conceptualizes normal and pathological
development in terms of common underlying processes. For readers
concerned with promoting healthy development in children and
helping children recover from childhood trauma, this engagingly
written book describes exactly how a child's social/interpersonal
environment can positively or negatively influence brain
development. Throughout the book, the authors highlight the
interrelationship between neurobiology and psychology. They present
basic information about brain development and organization,
describe exactly what is going on inside the brain at each stage of
development, and illustrate these concepts through a detailed case
study of a preschooler with severe problems in communicating and
relating. They discuss the pernicious effects that traumatic stress
has on brain and behavior, differentiating between simple and
complex PTSD, and review the specific brain impairments currently
attributed to a childhood history of maltreatment. Using their
unique psychobiological perspective and illustrative case studies,
the authors evaluate the principles and strategies of treatment,
showing how relationships and experiences can mitigate the effects
childhood trauma. After fleshing out the shocking cost to society
of child maltreatment, the authors offer broad policy prescriptions
that promote healthy development, including basic strategies for
prevention and early intervention. Psychological Trauma and the

Challenges for the next decade as the subtitle ofa book is a
statement ofambition. In the present time we have to be ambitious
as scientists, clinicians, and teachers. Without ambition we would
not be able to confront the problems of young people in an
effective way. In this decade, we can see an abundance of problems
of young people: football hooliganism, school drop out, vandalism,
delinquency, lack ofsocial skills, aggression, and depression. The
problem seems to grow. Governments, parents, and concerned citizens
call for action now. Unfortunately, the action that is taken is
often impulsive and not based on scientifically proven methods:
longerjail sentences for young first offenders, putting young
offenders in military look-alike training camps, etc. For some
reason, the usage of effective interventions is limited. In this,
book the reader will find an extensive overview of what we know to
be effective as a "cure" or prevention for the above-mentioned
problems. The first four chapters will give the reader a clear
insight ofwhat the "state ofthe art" is today. erview of cognitive
behavioural therapies with children and ado An integrative ov

What behavioral approaches can offer to education is described by
Slavenburg and van Bilsen in two chapters. In Part II authors from
Australia, the United States, and the Netherlands describe programs
for specific clinical populations: attention deficit disorder,
anti-social youth, learning problems, social skills problems,
depression, and aggression."
Metallocene is a well known sandwich complex with two
cyclopentadienyl ligands such as ferrocene. Recently, such
metallocene compounds have been found to be very characteristic and
they have become very important, not only in the area of organic
synthesis, but also in polymerization in industry. Metal complexes
with one cyclopentadienyl ligand have also become popular as half
sandwich complexes. The number of researchers in the field of
metallocenes has increased rapidly. However, the origin of the
characteristic reactivity of metallocenes is not fully understood.
In this volume, the chemistry of metal complexes with at least one
cyclopentadienyl ligand is comprehensively covered by leading
experts. Reactions discussed here are (i) natural product
synthesis, (ii) catalytic asymmetric synthesis, (iii) cyclization
reactions, (iv)catalytic reactions, (iv) polymerization reactions
and (v) carbon-carbon bond cleavage reactions. The reader will have
access to useful information about the current state of metallocene
chemistry.

Anxiety in Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder:
Evidence-Based Assessment and Treatment begins with a general
overview of the history of research on anxiety in ASD and the path
towards evidence-based assessment and treatment methods.
Thereafter, chapters focus on the nature of ASD and anxiety
comorbidity, the assessment of anxiety in ASD, and its treatment.
Later chapters are devoted to future directions for research on
this topic, including a discussion of anxiety assessment and
treatment for adults and minimally verbal individuals. Anxiety
disorders in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can cause
substantial distress and impairment over and above that caused by
ASD alone. Emerging research on genetic, psychological,
psychophysiological, and psychometric aspects of ASD establish
anxiety as a valid and necessary treatment target in this
population. This book is designed to help a broad array of
providers who work with children with ASD understand cutting-edge,
empirically supported treatments for anxiety, including specific
treatment plans and strategies.
Mental health problems impose a staggering worldwide public health
burden. Regrettably, whereas many sciences have been progressing
for centuries (e.g., biology, chemistry) it is only recently that
the strategies of science have been applied to the field of
clinical psychology. At this relatively early stage in the science
of clinical psychology, the majority of work is ahead of us, and as
such the prepared investigator must be familiar with the full
portfolio of modern research strategies-a set of 'directions' for
getting from 'here' to 'there.' To continue to move the science of
clinical psychology forward, investigators benefit when they
systematically rely on research strategy "routes" that achieve
favorable balances between scientific rigor and clinical relevance.
With this need in mind, The Oxford Handbook of Research Strategies
for Clinical Psychology has recruited some of the field's foremost
experts to explicate the essential research strategies currently
used across the modern clinical psychology landscape that maximize
both precision and significance. Chapters in this volume address
design, measurement, and analytic strategies for clinical
psychology, including comprehensive coverage of: - effective
laboratory methods in experimental psychopathology, single-case
experimental designs, small pilot trials, the randomized controlled
trial, adaptive and modular treatment designs, and dissemination
methods and models - change measurement, observational coding,
measurement of process variables across treatment, structural and
functional brain imagining, and experience sampling data collection
methods - statistical power, correlation and regression, randomized
clinical trial data analysis, conventions in mediation and
moderation analysis, structural equation modeling, meta-analytic
techniques, item-response theory, and the appropriate handling of
missing data. The book concludes with an integrative summary of
research strategies addressed across the volume, and guidelines for
future directions in research methodology, design, and analysis
that will keep our young science moving forward in a manner that
maximizes scientific rigor and clinical relevance.

T HIS VOL U M E has been written to describe the business side of a
commercial enterprise whose field is the entire civilized world.
Historically, the theory and knowledge of shipping management, as
distinguished from the practical skills of seaman ship, have been
transmitted from one generation to the next by word of mouth.
Little has been put on paper, primarily because the finest
exponents of the art of steamship management have been too busy
with their day-to-day concerns to do so. The "working level"
personnel often are superbly competent, but rarely qualify as liter
ary craftsmen. It has been my aim, in preparing this analysis of
the principles of the "business" of commercial shipping, to
describe that which trans pires in the various divisions of a
shipowning and operating organi zation. Insofar as possible, the
procedures followed in the offices have been described and
explained, as well as the underlying prin ciples of management by
which their decisions are reached. In the process of learning the
principles and practices that are set forth in these pages, I have
spent ajoy-filled lifetime in associa tion with ships. It has been
my good fortune to work in large and small American steamship
offices, to operate a major cargo termi nal, to participate in
establishing and putting into effect the policies of a
world-girdling American steamship organization, and to teach young
men these principles learned from experience as well as from
precept."

Doorways by Charmaine Kendal is the English winner of the 2014
Maskew Miller Longman Literature Competition. It is a play about
Avu, a Grade 12 girl who has taken her own life. She arrives in an
after-life world guarded by The Sentinel. He reads from a book of
records of people's lives, and sends them on the relevant path to
the judge. Three other characters from Avu's past also arrive. In
their conversations with The Sentinel, the events leading up to her
suicide are unravelled, and one sees their part in her death. The
play deals with themes like taking accountability for one's
actions, facing consequences and friendship. In The Club by Stephen
Finn we meet Gaga, a bully who is in deep trouble after hitting
another boy with a club. But is there more than one club? And who's
the real bully? This play explores the dynamics of bullying in high
school, with the characters representing types that will be
familiar to all readers. Although tense and often dark, The Club is
interspersed throughout with much humour and ends positively.
Mental health disorders are common in youth, impacting up to 1 in 5
children and adolescents. Typically, mental health difficulties
result in impaired functioning and lower quality of life for both
youth and their families. Fortunately, there are psychosocial
treatments for the mental health needs of youth that have earned
the "evidence-based" label. However, these treatments are not
widely available, and it is estimated that it can take up to 17
years for them to be transported into community settings. As a
result, a new field of dissemination and implementation (DI)
science has emerged to address this problem. Dissemination refers
to the transfer of information about evidence-based practices to
community settings, and implementation refers to active strategies
to assist adoption of evidence-based practices in community
settings. Dissemination and Implementation of Evidence-Based
Practices in Child and Adolescent Mental Health is the first book
to bring together the world's foremost experts in implementation
science and evidence-based practices for youth to provide the
latest findings around DI for children and adolescents. Chapters
provide comprehensive coverage of the science of dissemination and
implementation across contexts, disorders, and international
perspectives. This volume will be an essential resource to
implementation scientists and scholars, instructors in
doctoral-level training programs, and graduate students, as well as
policymakers, community mental health clinicians and
administrators, school administrators, researchers, and other
mental health professionals.
Among mental health researchers, there is a consensus that
empirically supported treatments (ESTs) have favorable outcomes and
that the outcomes are typically better than other approaches. The
majority of these are available as therapist manuals, brief books,
or other extended volumes. However, among mental health service
providers, there is often a view that these manuals and books can
be formulaic and rigid, and likely insensitive to individual
patient needs or presentations. With these conflicting perspectives
in place, there is a need for accurate communication and
reconciliation. Flexibility within Fidelity identifies how
effective ESTs can be implemented with both integrity and
flexibility. The book is comprised of chapters focusing on specific
ESTs for identified problem areas amongst adults and
children/adolescents, including anxiety disorders, PTSD, pain
management, and depression among others. Chapter authors focus on
the specific treatment components that are required to maintain
fidelity and the features of the EST which can be applied with
flexibility, promoting a personalized implementation. Written in an
accessible style featuring in-depth clinical discussions, this book
will equip mental health practitioners with the tools to implement
ESTs across client presentations.
