From edible insects and lab-grown meat to industrial farming and
freeganism, the future of food is the debate on everyone's lips.
The need for change in our food systems-to secure a more
sustainable, healthy and fair future-is recognized as a major
global challenge. Food: Bigger Than The Plate engages with the work
of artists, designers and food professionals who are examining key
activities and relationships through food. It discusses diverse and
creative ways to reimagine food waste, biodiversity, supply chains
and social empowerment through the politics and the pleasures of
one of life's single greatest necessities.
Even in the digital age, the printed poster retains an important,
much-loved role in connecting with audiences in a way that both
entertains and informs. The V&A was one of the first museums to
start collecting posters and to recognize the importance of doing
so. Far from ephemeral, posters are both a representation of the
time in which they were produced and distributed and, in many
instances, have shaped the societies in which they were seen. The
story of the poster is both one of changing styles and new
innovations in design, illustration and printing, and a visually
compelling social history. The Poster brings together over 300
examples that tell a comprehensive visual history of poster design
and the various ways the poster has been used to tell, to sell, to
charm and to spur on change. Organized into seven thematic chapters
that tell the story of the poster as a medium, each poster is
accompanied by a concise commentary that explains the work in terms
of its design, printing, content, message and the commercial,
social or political impact it may have had. Featuring works by the
masters of poster design that have become popular and highly
collectible classics, charting the ebb and flow of styles such as
Art Nouveau, Modernism, Art Deco, Psychedelia and Punk and
featuring the nostalgic glow of muchloved brands as well as posters
that shook and changed the world, The Poster will be an essential
visual resource for graphic designers and illustrators - a
reference for anyone with an interest in collecting posters and an
engaging design and social history for all who appreciate this most
popular of art forms.
From the sky-high coiffures of Georgian Britain to the languid
silhouette of 1920s 'flappers', Style and Satire tells the story of
European fashion and its most fantastical trends from two
interrelated perspectives - the lavish, celebratory fashion plate,
and the gloriously irreverent satirical print. Beautifully printed,
hand-coloured fashion plates depicting the latest styles and
fabrics first appeared in Britain and France in the late 1700s -
nestled in luxurious periodicals and available for sale as
desirable objects in their own right. At the same time (and often
by the same artists), satirical prints gloried in the absurdities
of fashion, presenting an alternative, often grotesque, vision of
the fashionable ideal. Presented here as a joint history for the
first time, the two genres describe an emerging, vibrant fashion
culture. They themselves also evolved as art forms, first through
the pages of the mass-produced Victorian periodical, and then as
vibrant, stencilled images in the luxurious publications of the
1920s and '30s. Lavishly illustrated and rigorously researched,
Style and Satire presents a fresh and original history of fashion -
a vital and witty addition to every fashion victim's library.
