Chemical and Biological Weapons - A Study of Proliferation (Hardcover): E. Spiers Chemical and Biological Weapons - A Study of Proliferation (Hardcover)
E. Spiers
R2,879 Discovery Miles 28 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is an analysis of the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons, which examines the attractions and utility of these weapons for some developing states, the difficulties encountered in trying to control their spread and the lessons from the Rabta controversy and the Gulf War. E. Spiers
R2,879 Discovery Miles 28 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The use of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq War, followed by the Rabta controversy in Libya and the threat of chemical and biological attack during the Gulf War, dramatised the consequences of the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons. Although the use of these weapons has been banned by the Geneva Protocol (1925), they still have attractions for some states and pose risks to regional neighbours or intervention forces. In this work the risks and attractions are evaluated, the difficulties of curbing their spread examined, and the reaction to the Rabta revelations assessed. The Gulf War is analysed in depth, including the allied response to the Iraqi threat, the non-use of chemical and biological weapons during the war, and the lessons of the conflict. Finally, the evolution of American chemical weapons policy and the likely impact of the Chemical Weapons Convention is considered in light of the inherently dynamic nature of the weaponry and the flexibility of its use.

E. Spiers
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction has continued to give cause for concern even after the end of the Cold War. This book analyses how the prospects for proliferation have changed since the 1990s, particularly in light of the Gulf War and the UN inspections of Iraq. It will examine the new pattern of incentives and disincentives for proliferation, the utility of these weapons at state and sub-state levels and their implications for arms control and international security.

Monoclonal Antibodies in Biotechnology - Theoretical and Practical Aspects (Paperback): Kenneth C. McCullough, Raymond E. Spier Monoclonal Antibodies in Biotechnology - Theoretical and Practical Aspects (Paperback)
Kenneth C. McCullough, Raymond E. Spier
R1,793 Discovery Miles 17 930 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Monoclonal antibodies are one of the most exciting developments in biotechnology in recent years; this book provides a comprehensive description of principles, methodologies and applications of this powerful technology to modern science and industry. The immune system of the body, in particular the role of antibodies, is described; and details provided on the isolation of antibody-producing cells, how hybridomas are formed and maintained in culture such that the required antibody can be produced to a very high degree of purity. The material is presented in such a way that students, researchers and managers in research and development will be able to make choices as to which are the most suitable techniques for their particular requirements. The text is comprehensively referenced and, in short, the book is a necessary resource for all those who have the need to be involved in the production of monoclonal antibodies from hybridoma cells in culture.

Housing and Social Exclusion (Paperback): Fiona E. Spiers Housing and Social Exclusion (Paperback)
Fiona E. Spiers
R803 Discovery Miles 8 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Examining social housing provision in the context of current and historical practice, the contributors argue that the homeless, particularly those with mental health problems, run the very real risk of being socially excluded; and present arguments for how policy should develop. They consider such issues as: What is the role of government? How far should the state intervene? What can the private sector contribute? How does the law affect the various groups? How can we house the growing number of homeless people with disabilities?
