The Austrian composer Hanns Eisler was Bertolt Brecht's closest
friend and most politically committed collaborator. In these
conversations with Hans Bunge which took place over a period of
four years, from 1958 until his death in 1962, Eisler offers a
compelling and absorbing account of his and Brecht's period of
exile in Europe and the USA between 1933 and 1947, and of the
quality of artistic, social and intellectual life in post-war East
Germany. Brecht, Music and Culture includes a discussion of a
number of Brecht's principal plays, including Life of Galileo and
The Caucasian Chalk Circle, considers the place of music in
Brecht's work and discusses the time that Brecht was brought before
The House of Un-American Activities Committee. It includes lively
accounts of Brecht's meetings with key cultural figures, including
Arnold Schoenberg, Charlie Chaplin and Thomas Mann, and offers
throughout a sustained response to the question of the purpose of
art in a time of political turmoil. Throughout the conversations,
Eisler provides illuminating and original insights into Brecht's
work and ideas and gives a highly entertaining first-hand account
of his friend's personality and attitudes. First published in
Germany in 1975, and now published in English for the first time,
the conversations provide a fascinating account of the lives and
work of two of the twentieth century's greatest artists.
Multi-Family Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa is a treatment manual
that details an empirically supported and innovative treatment for
this disorder. This book provides a detailed description of the
theory and clinical practice of MFT-AN. The treatment draws on the
Maudsley Family Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa model as well as
integrating other psychological and group frameworks. Part I
details the theoretical concepts, MFT-AN structure, content and
implementation, including clinically rich and detailed guidance on
group facilitation, therapeutic technique and troubleshooting when
the group process encounters difficulties. Part III provides
step-by-step instructions for the group activities in the initial
four-day intensive workshop and for the subsequent follow-up days
that occur over a further six to eight months. The book will serve
as a practical guide for both experienced and new clinicians
working with children and adolescents with eating disorders and
their families, in utilising multi-family therapy in their clinical
practice.
Written over a period of 17 years, the Handbook of Chemical Risk Assessment exhaustively examines and analyzes the world literature on chemicals entering the environment from human activities. The three volumes cover chemicals recommended by environmental specialists of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other resource managers. The choices were based on the real or potential impact of each contaminant and on the knowledge available about their mitigation. The information for each chemical includes source and use; physical, chemical, and metabolic properties; concentrations in field collections of abiotic materials and living organisms; deficiency effects; lethal and sublethal effects; and proposed regulatory criteria for the protection of human health and sensitive natural resources. Each chapter selectively reviews and synthesizes the technical literature on a specific priority contaminant and its effects on the environment. Successful risk assessment relies heavily on extensive and well-documented databases. They often include too much - or too little - information about too many chemicals. Of the hundreds of thousands of chemicals discharged into the environment, only a small number have sufficient information to attempt preliminary risk assessment. Sold only as a three volume set, the Handbook of Chemical Risk Assessment provides you with the exact amount of information you need in a single resource.
This book is the result of over ten (10) years of research and
development in flexible robots and structures at Sandia National
Laboratories. The authors de cided to collect this wealth of
knowledge into a set of viewgraphs in order to teach a graduate
class in Flexible Robot Dynamics and Controls within the Mechanical
En gineering Department at the University of New Mexico (UNM).
These viewgraphs, encouragement from several students, and many
late nights have produced a book that should provide an upper-level
undergraduate and graduate textbook and a reference for experienced
professionals. The content of this book spans several disciplines
including structural dynam ics, system identification,
optimization, and linear, digital, and nonlinear control theory
which are developed from several points of view including
electrical, me chanical, and aerospace engineering as well as
engineering mechanics. As a result, the authors believe that this
book demonstrates the value of solid applied theory when developing
hardware solutions to real world problems. The reader will find
many real world applications in this book and will be shown the
applicability of these techniques beyond flexible structures which,
in turn, shows the value of mul tidisciplinary education and
teaming."
The most fascinating and profitable subject of predictive
algorithms is the human actor. Analysing big data through learning
algorithms to predict and pre-empt individual decisions gives a
powerful tool to corporations, political parties and the state.
Algorithmic analysis of digital footprints, as an omnipresent form
of surveillance, has already been used in diverse contexts:
behavioural advertising, personalised pricing, political
micro-targeting, precision medicine, and predictive policing and
prison sentencing. This volume brings together experts to offer
philosophical, sociological, and legal perspectives on these
personalised data practices. It explores common themes such as
choice, personal autonomy, equality, privacy, and corporate and
governmental efficiency against the normative frameworks of the
market, democracy and the rule of law. By offering these insights,
this collection on data-driven personalisation seeks to stimulate
an interdisciplinary debate on one of the most pervasive,
transformative, and insidious socio-technical developments of our
time.
Thousands of inorganic and organic chemicals and their metabolites
enter the biosphere daily as a direct result of human activities.
Many of these chemicals have serious consequences on sensitive
species of natural resources, crops, livestock, and public health.
The most hazardous of these were identified by a panel of
environmental specialists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service;
these chemicals are the focus of this encyclopedia.
For each priority group of chemicals, information is presented on
sources, uses, physical and chemical properties, tissue
concentrations in field collections and their significance, lethal
and sublethal effects under controlled conditions. This includes
effects on survival, growth, reproduction, metabolism,
carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, and mutagenicity - and proposed
regulatory criteria for the protection of sensitive natural
resources, crops, livestock, and human health. Taxonomic groups of
natural resources covered include terrestrial and aquatic plants
and invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and
mammals.
* The only product that centers on the most hazardous environmental
chemicals to sensitive natural resources
* The only single volume compendium on the subject, allowing ease
in consulting
* Written by a noted national and international authority on
chemical risk assessment to living organisms
First published in 1951, Man into Wolf attempts to suggest the
possibility of historical, or rather prehistorical, evolutionist
derivation of all crimes of violence, from the individual attack on
life known as murder or manslaughter to the collective organized
killing which we call war. The author has tried to show that the
evidence from prehistory can be made intelligible on the theory of
Jung's archetypes surviving in the collective conscience and
revealing themselves all over the world in legends, myths and
rites. He discusses, in the notes on the lecture, every possible
aspect of the subject ranging from the perverseness of the Marquis
de Sade to the Grecian Bacchantes, and from the Green Men and the
agricultural ceremonies to a case study of John George Haigh. This
book will be of interest to students of anthropology, gender
studies, and psychology.
This book critically examines the available literature on oceanic
acidification: including a historical review of pH and atmospheric
CO2 levels over the millennia; natural and anthropogenic sources of
CO2 to the atmosphere and sea surface; chemical, physical, and
biological mode of action; biological effects of acidification to
marine plants and animals under laboratory conditions; field
observations on seawater chemistry and effects of declining pH; and
various technical and political mitigation strategies. Written by
Dr. Ronald Eisler, a noted authority on chemical risk assessment,
the book summarizes real and projected effects of oceanic
acidification.

On March 11,2011, Japan experienced the largest earthquake in its
history, causing massive property damage. This book summarizes and
critically analyzes the natural events and human shortcomings
responsible for the failure of the Fukushima reactors during the
first year following the accident, and governmental and civilian
responses to the emergency. It covers the plant's safety history,
the tsunami and earthquake, and the implications of the events on
the nuclear reactor industry.

Nobody doubts that the contemporary art of Turkey has `arrived' on
the international stage: Hale Tenger's work has been bought by the
Pompidou Centre; Fikret Atay features in Tate Modern's collection;
Kutlug Ataman has been nominated for the Turner Prize; and
collectors flock from around the world to pick up pieces by
exceptionally talented Turkish artists. 'Unleashed' is the most
comprehensive account yet of the recent storm of activity in
Turkey's art scene. A sumptuously illustrated A-Z of over ninety of
the most exciting Turkish contemporary artists, it contains many
exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in Turkish art,
as well as such up-and-coming artists as Leyla Gediz, Emre Huner
and Ali Kazmal and the Turkish diaspora. It also features
interviews with and profiles of leading curators, gallerists,
collectors, artist-run spaces and museums. The work of the featured
artists is put into further context by three important essays
written by leading curators and critics, which tackle the issues of
identity, and the relationship of Turkish art to international
artistic trends.

SIR DAVID K. HENDERSON F. R. G. P. Ed. and Lon., F. R. S. E. IT is
a great privilege and honour to be invited to write a fore word to
Dr. Robert Eislers book dealing with c An Anthropo logical
Interpretation of Sadism, Masochism and Lycanthropy. I was
fortunate enough to be the Chairman of the Psychiatric Section of
the Royal Society of Medicine when Dr. Eisler lec tured to the
Section on this topic. I was enthralled and amazed by the arresting
manner in which he presented his material, by the depth of his
knowledge, and by his modesty. He con veyed a message to his
audience, and he made me realize, as I had never fully done before,
how much psychiatrists, lawyers and judges, schoolmasters, and
ministers of religion might profit by a far greater knowledge of
anthropological data, and their application to human development.
This, then, is a book which is long overdue, but there is some
satisfaction in the thought that, at last, it has been undertaken
by a man whose scholarly and cultural interests have developed over
many years, and covered a wide variety of topics. At one time or
another in his career he has interested himself in such subjects as
physics, archaeology, the history of art, the his tory of religion,
astrology, and ancient manuscripts, any one of which might be
thought sufficient for any man. But Eisler has advanced much
further than that, because his publications in the form of books
and lectures have received recognition all over the world.
Furthermore, he has taken part in and addressed important
Congresses he has lectured at the Sor bonne on religious, social
and economic problems, and has even addressed the British
Parliamentary Finance Committee, and the U. S...
Riane Eisler shows us how history has consistently promoted the link between sex and violence--and how we can sever this link and move to a politics of partnership rather than domination in all our relations.
An in-depth look at the political landscape of Saskatchewan from
its leftist roots to its shift in recent years to the right of
centre. One of the most underreported stories in Canadian politics
has been the political and economic transformation of Saskatchewan.
The province that was the birthplace of the CCF-NDP and democratic
socialism in North America has, over the last fifty years,
undergone fundamental change that has altered its identity. It is
now seen as the bastion of the centre-right Saskatchewan Party,
which has become one of the most dominant provincial political
parties in Canada. The story of that transformation, in which the
once powerful NDP has been relegated to the political margins,
reaches far beyond the province itself and reflects national and
global events that have shaped the province over the course of the
last half century. Modern Saskatchewan politics have been less
about ideology and more about the influence of issues and events
since the late 1960s and the lure of populist leaders who speak to
an identity rooted in the province's history. Consistent with
Saskatchewan's history, From Left to Right presents a blend of
populism, a deeply embedded spirit of independence and personal
initiative, coupled with communitarian values and the constant
search for a better future.
Despite the esteemed nature of gold in society, evidence of adverse
ecotoxicological effects and risk to human health in various mining
and extraction techniques has generated increasing interest in the
biological and environmental implications of gold. Biogeochemical,
Health, and Ecotoxicological Perspectives on Gold and Gold Mining
is the first comprehensive book to evaluate the effect of gold
production and use on human health as well as the environmental
impact of gold mining and extraction. Dr. Ronald Eisler, a
well-known senior research biologist and expert in the chemical and
biological effects of various compounds on wildlife, provides a
thorough risk assessment of gold, including its geology and sources
and physical, chemical, and metabolic properties. The author
documents gold concentrations and field collections of abiotic
materials and biota and presents research on the lethal and
sublethal effects of gold on plants and animals. Supported by case
histories, the book examines health risks in gold miners, human
sensitivity to jewelry and dental implants, and medicinal uses. It
uses examples in several countries to thoroughly explore the
environmental effects of gold extraction, including tailings
disposal, acid mine drainage, cyanide, arsenic, and mercury
contamination, water management issues, and abandoned mines. Unlike
traditional risk assessments, the author also takes into account
social, political, economic, medicinal, and psychological variables
for a more complete perspective on gold's impact on health and the
environment. Biogeochemical, Health, and Ecotoxicological
Perspectives on Gold and Gold Mining concludes with a discussion on
mining legislation, safety, and procedures.
The assassins of Barry Eisler's #1 bestseller The Killer Collective
are back-and this time, it's chaos. Assistant US Attorney Alondra
Diaz hates traffickers. And she's determined to put one of
America's most powerful financiers, Andrew Schrader, in prison
forever for his crimes against children. But Schrader has videos
implicating some of the most powerful members of the US national
security state. To eliminate Diaz, the powers that be bring in a
contractor: Marvin Manus, an implacable assassin whose skills have
been forged in intelligence, the military, and the hardest prisons.
Enter former Marine sniper Dox and black-ops veteran Daniel Larison
with an unusual assignment: not to kill Diaz, but to keep her
alive. A lot of players are determined to acquire the videos and
the blackmail power they represent. But with Seattle sex-crimes
detective Livia Lone, "natural causes" killer John Rain, and
ex-Mossad honey-trap specialist Delilah, the good guys might just
have a chance. They're not going to play by anyone else's rules.
They're not going to play by any rules at all. They want a
different kind of fight. The chaos kind.
When the government offers a twenty-six-year-old former Marine a
five-figure payday, there's only one question: Who does he have to
kill? 1991. A restless young man called Dox is back home in Texas.
His friends have missed him, and his mother and sisters need him.
But after four years as a Marine and another two as a CIA
contractor fighting the Soviet Union alongside the Afghan
mujahideen, small-town life in Abilene is a suffocating dead end.
Another secret war, this one in Southeast Asia, offers a big payday
and the solution to his family's troubles. But secret wars are
never what they're billed to be, and Dox is about to get the
education of his young life. Among the lessons-the only thing more
dangerous than war is falling in love with your enemy.
