This book attempts to acquaint engineers who have mastered the essentials of structural mechanics with the mathematical foundation of their science, of structural mechanics of continua. The prerequisites are modest. A good working knowledge of calculus is sufficient. The intent is to develop a consistent and logical framework of theory which will provide a general understanding of how mathematics forms the basis of structural mechanics. connective tissues are essential for the physical functioning of the animals's body. The condition of the various connective tissues is governed by biochemical factors, anabolism and catabolism, that are controlled by specific enzymes. Any change outside the normal range of metabolism, for instance induced by immunological reactions, may induce a pathological disturbance. The result can be acute or chronic inflammation, or loss of normal function, expressed in loosening, dilatation, breaking, wear, stiffness, shrinking, scars, stenosis, and cirrhosis or any other kind of fibrosis. A first step toward improving our understanding of the feedback mecha nism that maintains the biological status and texture of a given connective tissue is to combine what is known about synthesis and enzymatic degradation of the components of fibers and ground substance. Common pathological phenomena like chronic inflammation of immune reactions can be either the result of the cause of disturbances in the sensitive balance of connective tissue metabolism. Nowadays con nective tissues are less and less regarded as brady trophic tissue but rather as a stimulating and many-sided problem of research. Before we can understand the pathogenesis of the connective tissue diseases that result in the destructive processes mentioned above, basic research will be necessary. This research will be furthered by a constant exchange of information and the results of. observations. To promote this exchange of information between scientists, symposia on connective tissue research are organized at regular intervals."

The effects of medicaments, used in the treatment of arthritic diseases, on the surface tension of the synovial fluid have been measured. The synovial fluid was obtained from the carpal joints of freshly slaughtered 'calves and from knee joints of arthritic patients. Values obtained for the surface tension (~) of the pure liquids were 47. 6 mN/m and 45. 8 mN/m respectively. The surfGBPce tensions of the additives and their effect,as a function of concentration, on the surface tension of synovial fluid are shown in figure 2. From this diagram it can be seen that bone and cartilage extract(K u. K-Extrakt) is the most passive additive. The D-Glu- coseamine sulphate preparations cause protein be deposited from the syno- vial fluid. This due to the high acidity of these preparations and the effect disappears when they are buffered at pH 6. With Glycosaminoglycane polysulfate the increase of surface tension with concentration is lower than expected in the case of human synovial fluid. This point shill re- quires clarification. x. Die liberragende okologische Bedeutung des Humus im Lebens- haushalt des Waldes stellt die Humusfrage in die erste Reihe forstlichen Denkens und Handelns. Die Produktivitat unserer Walder steht und fallt mit dem Humuszustand. Guter Waldhumus ist der Inbegriff der Waldbodenfruchtbarkeit. Schlechter Humus ist hingegen der Ausgangs- punkt flir Unfruchtbarkeit, Waldzerstorung, Walderkrankung und Walduntergang. Die Erstellung richtiger Waldhumusdiagnosen wird damit zu einem Postulat flir die Forstwirtschaft, wenn diese biologische Produk- tionshochstleistungen erreichen will. Eine planmaBige Durchflihrung von Waldhumusdiagnosen setzt eine klare, flir forstliche Zwecke geeignete Typisierung und systematische Einordnung der Waldhumusbildungen voraus. 1m forstlichen Schrifttum scheinen jedoch - wie namhafte Autoren bestatigen - viele Unstimmig- keiten und Unzulanglichkeiten auf. Mit Recht wird festgestellt, daB sich Klassifikation und schematische Gliederung der Waldhumusbildungen noch zu tief im Hypothetischen befinden und daB noch nicht jene Klarheit vorliegt, die flir die Erstellung brauchbarer Waldhumusdiagnosen genligt. Dieser Tatbestand stellte mich vor die Aufgabe, diesen Fragenkomplex einer flir forstliche Belange moglichst ausreichenden Klarung beziehungs- weise Erweiterung zuzuflihren. Es waren im besonderen zu erheben: Unterschiede in den Entstehungsbedingungen flir Waldhumusbildungen, Unterschiede in den sich daraus ergebenden Waldhumusentwicklungen und letztlich Unterschiede in der forstokologischen Eigenart der auf diese Weise festgestellten Waldhumustypen. Die einschlagigen Untersuchungen und vergleichenden Beobachtungen wurden in verschiedenen, voneinander abweichenden Wuchsgebieten Europas und der USA, auf unterschiedlichsten Standorten mit wechseln- den Standorts- und Waldzustanden, durchgeflihrt. Die Beziehung zum Waldbau wurde in keinem Fall auBer acht gelassen. Daraus ergaben sich wertvolle Schllisse flir die Unterscheidung zwischen normal-natiirlichen und pathologischen Humuszustanden.

Schritte arztlicher Erkenntnis und Entscheidungen werden dargestellt. Die Dar- stellungen entstammen dem allgemeinarztlichen, klinisch-ambulanten bzw. -sta- tionaren Bereich sowie dem Bereich zwischen Klinik und Praxis. Sie gehoeren dem Alltag an, wie er zwischen Hannover und Bern ablauft. Die Szenen sind nicht gestellt. Die Berechtigung, ein derartiges Buch herauszugeben, sehen die Herausgeber in ihrer eigenen Unzufriedenheit gegenuber der Entwicklung in der Medizin so- wie in der Kritik, welche in der OEffentlichkeit an dieser Medizin geubt wird. Eigene Unzufriedenheit wie oeffentlich geubte Kritik beziehen sich darauf, dass zum einen vielfach unreflektiert diagnostiziert und gehandelt wird, und dass Handlungsstrategien unkritisch ubernommen werden. Zu viel wird der einzelne Patient geroentgt, im Computertomogramm untersucht, biopsiert, mit Pharmaka behandelt und operiert, statt dass er eingehender mit dem Arzt sprechen kann. Zum anderen wird der einzelne Patient mit UEberweisungszetteln vom Allgemein- arzt zum Spezialisten, zum "Feindflug" geschickt und hier weitergereicht. Einer "Verzettelung der Verantwortung" durch problembezogenes interkollegiales Handeln ist oft schwer entgegenzuwirken. Daruber hinaus wird die Wissen- schaftlichkeit der angewandten Medizin, und hier v. a. in der ambulanten Kran- kenversorgung, in Frage gestellt. Die Folge ist, dass sich weite Bereiche der Me- dizin in einem standigen Abwehrkampf befinden. Fragwurdige UEberzeugungen werden vertreten: Wissenschaft sei nur in Klinik und Labor realisie'rbar; Wissen- schaft in der Praxis habe dagegen keine methodische Eigenstandigkeit. Als Folge dieser einseitigen Betrachtungsweisen werden wichtige politische Ent- scheidungen zur Wissenschaftspolitik getroffen, die bestehenden Verhaltnisse perpetuieren.

British artist Christopher Winter (*1968) is a figurative painter, performance and installation artist. His work is influenced primarily by literature, film and politics. He has a particular interest in fairy tales, folk rituals and often questions the nature of our reality. Winter's paintings are mysterious yet also have a narrative element. This is the second monograph to be published on his painting by Kerber Verlag. This volume compliments the preceding one and illuminates Winter's previously unseen installation and performance work. The book is arranged in themed “Islands�, works are not organised chronologically. Die Medizin befindet sieh zweifellos in einer Krise, aber sie ist offensiehtlieh langst nieht so moribund, daB sie von den wiitenden Attaeken Illiehs hinweg gefegt werden konnte. Dennoeh ist es Illich gelungen, das von vielen dumpf empfundene Unbehagen an der Medizin, ja der Zivilisation sehleehthin, in einen von der breiten Offentliehkeit willig aufgenomme nen Mythos von der Entmiindigung des Mensehen und der Enteignung der Gesundheit umzumiinzen. Der Nemesis, der gereehten Strafe fUr die industrielle Hybris, die in der Umwandlung der Welt in eine inhumane Krankenstation bestehen werde, konne die Mensehheit nur dureh die Riiekkehr zur Selbstbestimmung und zur Autonomie des Individuums entrinnen. Die These Illichs, die Medizin habe sich zu einer ernsten Gefahr fur die Gesundheit entwickelt, hat nicht nur bedingungslose Zustimmung gefunden. Sie ist aueh auf erhebliehen Widerspruch gestoBen. Eine konsequente Auseinandersetzung mit Illichs Werk "Die Nemesis der Medizin" hat im deutschen Spraehraum bislang aber nieht stattgefun den. Dies mag daran liegen, daB die Diskussion nicht nur auf medizini scher Ebene gefiihrt werden kann. Illichs Kritik an der Medizin setzt an der Industriegesellschaft und ihrer Biirokratie an, die den Mensehen ihren Bediirfnissen entspreehend beliebig manipulierten."
