'Islam in Europe' and 'Islamophobia' are subjects of vital global
importance which currently preoccupy policy-makers and academics
alike. Through the examination of various European Muslim groups
and institutions that have branched off from Islamic movements -
including the Muslim Brotherhood, Hizb ut-Tahrir and Jama'at-i
Islami - this book outlines the configuration of social, political
and religious processes that have given rise to new kinds of
European Muslim organisations. The authors offer a new perspective
on these Muslim groups and seek to reclaim them from the often
highly-charged public debates by placing them within the context of
their origins as politicised religious movements on the one hand
and their ongoing incorporation into European societal structures
on the other. They also consider the relationship of these
organisations to their 'parent' movements and examine the presence
of Islam in European education and higher education institutions.
Taking into account the connection between Islamic movements and
the perceived surge of 'Islamophobia' in Europe, this book does not
debate the question of whether these groups fit into normative or
cultural structures of European nation-states, but rather examines
how these structures have changed through their interaction with
these groups and the growing Muslim population within Europe. It
does not consider political Islam as the antithesis to a refined
notion of secularism, but as a form of public religion which
contributes to the ever-changing structure of Europe's secular
regimes. Featuring the work of more than 40 scholars from around
the world, this is the comprehensive guide to Islamic movements in
Europe, offering original, definitive perspectives on Muslims and
Islam in Europe today. It will be essential reading for
policy-makers, political commentators and scholars alike.
This book represents an ongoing research agenda the aim of which is
to contribute to the Keynesian paradigm in macroeconomics. A
currently dominant research strategy in macroeconomics is based on
the Dynamic General Equilibrium (DGE) model. Its essential features
are the assumption of intertemporal optimizing behavior of economic
agents, competitive markets and price mediated market clearing
through flexible wages and prices. Contributions to Economic
Analysis was established in 1952. The series purpose is to
stimulate the international exchange of scientific information. The
series includes books from all areas of macroeconomics and
microeconomics.
Will Islam be able to adapt to France's secularity and its strict
separation of public and private spheres? Can France accommodate
Muslims? In this book, Frank Peter argues that the debate about
"Islam" and "Muslims" is not simply caused by ignorance or
Islamophobia. Rather, it is an integral part of how secularism is
reasoned. Islam and the Governing of Muslims in France shows that
understanding religion as separate from other aspects of life, such
as politics, economy, and culture, disregards the ways religion has
operated and been managed in "secular" societies such as France.
This book uncovers the varying rationalities of the secular that
have developed over the past few decades in France to "govern
Islam," in order to examine how Muslims engage with the secular
regime and contribute to its transformation. This book offers a
close analysis of French secularism as it has been debated by
Islamic intellectuals and activists from the 1990s until the
present. It will influence the study of secularism as well as the
study of Islam in the French Republic, and reveal new connections
between Islamic traditions and secular rationalities.
In social theory and sociology, time and travel in technological
cultures is one of the new and challenging research topics in the
'mobilities turn'. Yet surprisingly, contemporary practices of
mobility have till now, seen only limited theorization within these
disciplines. By analyzing historic and contextualized transit
practices, this revealing book argues that travel cannot now simply
be reduced to getting from A to B; it is an integrated part of
everyday life. In this area, researching how problems can be
identified as dilemmas and reformulated as design problems helps
create a new vocabulary; one which will not only change the agenda
in the debate on mobility problems in the public domain, but will
also suggest new ways of theorizing mobility innovations. In this
fascinating book, author Peters: develops a conceptual framework to
study contemporary transit practices and evaluate innovation
strategies gives new insights regarding historic and contemporary
design strategies and regarding innovations related to travel in
technological cultures gives special attention to electronic
timespaces and ICT based mobility innovations investigates cases of
travel in technological cultures, car travel, air travel, and
cycling in Dutch towns. An original and provocative contribution to
the emerging field of mobilities, this book will become an
essential resource for advanced undergraduate, post-graduate,
researchers and practitioners in the fields of sociology,
geography, spatial planning, policy and transportation studies.

What is the Church's mission? What does it mean to participate in
God's mission personally? How do "mission" and culture interact and
conflict? This book articulates various evangelical views regarding
the church's mission and provides a healthy, vigorous, and gracious
debate on this controversial topic. In a helpful Counterpoints
format, this volume demonstrates the unique theological frameworks,
doctrinal convictions, and missiological conclusions that inform
and distinguish the views: Soteriological Mission: Jonathan Leeman
Participatory Mission: Christopher Wright Contextual Mission: John
Franke Ecumenical-Political Mission: Peter Leithart Each
contributor answers the same key questions based on their biblical
interpretations and theological convictions: What is your
biblical-theological framework for mission? How does your
definition of mission inform your understanding of the church's
mission? How does the Mission of God and Kingdom of God relate to
the mission of the church? What is the gospel? How does your view
on the gospel inform the mission of the church? How do verbal
proclamation of the gospel, discipleship, corporate worship, caring
for the poor, social justice, restoring shalom, developing culture,
and international missions fit into the church's mission? The
interactive format helps readers get a clearer picture of why
different conclusions are drawn and provide a fresh starting point
for discussion and debate of the church's mission. The
Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of
scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both
fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a
one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different
positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th IAPR TC3
International Workshop on Artificial Neural Networks in Pattern
Recognition, ANNPR 2020, held in Winterthur, Switzerland, in
September 2020. The conference was held virtually due to the
COVID-19 pandemic. The 22 revised full papers presented were
carefully reviewed and selected from 34 submissions. The papers
present and discuss the latest research in all areas of neural
network-and machine learning-based pattern recognition. They are
organized in two sections: learning algorithms and architectures,
and applications.
This volume centres on the history and legacy of the Mongol World
Empire founded by Chinggis Khan and his sons, including its impact
upon the modern world. An international team of scholars examines
the political and cultural history of the Mongol empire, its
Chinggisid successor states, and the non-Chinggisid dynasties that
came to dominate Inner Asia in its wake. Geographically, it focuses
on the continental region from East Asia to Eastern Europe.
Beginning in the twelfth century, the volume moves through to the
establishment of Chinese and Russian political hegemony in Inner
Asia from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Contributors
use recent research and new approaches that have revitalized Inner
Asian studies to highlight the world-historical importance of the
regimes and states formed during and after the Mongol conquest.
Their conclusions testify to the importance of a region whose
modern fate has been overshadowed by Russia and China.

Culture is a constant reference in debates surrounding Islam in
Europe. Yet the notion of culture is commonly restricted to
conceptual frames of multiculturalism where it relates to group
identities, collective ways of life and recognition. This volume
extends such analysis of culture by approaching it as semiotic
practice which conjoins the making of subjects with the
configuration of the social. Examining fields such as memory,
literature, film, and Islamic art, the studies in this volume
explore culture as another element in the assemblage of
rationalities governing European Islam. From this perspective, the
transformations of European identities can be understood as a
matter of cultural practice and politics, which extend the
analytical frames of political philosophy, historical legacies,
normative orders and social dynamics.
