Qualitative interviewing is among the most widely used methods in
the social sciences, but it is arguably the least understood. In
The Science and Art of Interviewing, Kathleen Gerson and Sarah
Damaske offer clear, theoretically informed and empirically rich
strategies for conducting interview studies. They present both a
rationale and guide to the science-and art-of in-depth interviewing
to take readers through all the steps in the research process, from
the initial stage of formulating a question to the final one of
presenting the results. Gerson and Damaske show readers how to
develop a research design for interviewing, decide on and find an
appropriate sample, construct a questionnaire, conduct probing
interviews, and analyze the data they collect. At each stage, they
also provide practical tips about how to address the ever-present,
but rarely discussed challenges that qualitative researchers
routinely encounter, particularly emphasizing the relationship
between conducting well-crafted research and building powerful
social theories. With an engaging, accessible style, The Science
and Art of Interviewing targets a wide range of audiences, from
upper-level undergraduates and graduate methods courses to students
embarking on their dissertations to seasoned researchers at all
stages of their careers.
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

Gene therapy as a treatment for cancer is at a critical point in
its evolution. Exciting new developments in gene targeting and
vector technology, coupled with results from the first generation
of preclinical and clinical studies have led to the design and
testing of new therapeutic approaches. The Third Edition of "Gene
Therapy of Cancer" provides crucial updates on the basic and
applied sciences of gene therapy. It offers a comprehensive
assessment of the field including the areas of suicide gene
therapy, oncogene and suppressor gene targeting, immunotherapy,
drug resistance gene therapy, and the genetic modification of stem
cells. Researchers at all levels of development, from basic
laboratory investigators to clinical practitioners, will find this
book to be instructive.
Cancer gene therapy, like cancer therapy in general, is evolving
rapidly, testing new concepts, targets and pathways, evoking new
technologies, and passing new regulatory hurdles. Its essence,
however, has not changed: the hope and challenges of returning
altered genes to normal, using targeted gene expression to alter
the function of both tumor and microenvironment, and in some cases
normal cells, and delivering functionally important genes to
specific cell types to increase sensitivity to killing or to
protect normal cells from cancer therapies.
In some instances, gene therapy for cancer forms a continuum
from gene repair through the use of molecularly modified cells; the
use of viral and non-viral vector based gene delivery to both tumor
and tumor microenvironment; the use of viral and gene based
vaccines; and development of new gene-based therapeutics. The
unique mechanistically chosen vector platforms are at the heart of
this technology because they allow for direct and selective cell
death and transient to sustained delivery of vaccine molecules or
molecules that affect the microenvironment, vasculature, or the
immune response.
Explains the underlying cancer biology necessary for understanding
proposed therapeutic approaches Presents in-depth description of
targeting systems and treatment strategiesCovers the breadth of
gene therapy approaches including immunotherapeutic, drug
resistance, oncolytic viruses, as well as regulatory perspectives
from both the NCI and FDA
This anthology of addresses and essays by former Jewish Theological
Seminary Chancellor Gerson D. Cohen is written in a popular style
and is intended for a wide audience. The pieces offer an overview
of Gerson D. Cohen's thoughts on such topics as the centrality of
religion to Judaism, eschatology, Jewish history in its cultural
context, Jewish scholarship and Zionism. In the book's Foreword,
Rabbi Gillman writes: "I envy the readers who will encounter Gerson
Cohen for the first time through the pages of this book."
Lloyd Gerson offers an original new study of Plato's account of persons, a topic of continuing interest to philosophers. His book locates Plato's psychology within his two-world metaphysics, showing that embodied persons are images of a disembodied ideal, and that they reflect many of the conflicting states of the sensible world. For Plato, Gerson argues, philosophy is the means to recognizing one's true identity.

BEYOND is the story of the birth of a thought who becomes a living
breathing person on a series of planetary existences. This thought,
first known as Arel while still in its "thought state" meets those
he will be allied with during his lives. It is at this point where
all relationships are solidified for our hero.We travel with Arel
through a few very early planetary existences until he, as Jarel,
and his sister, Alyce make their way after the loss of their
parents to an Eden-like part of the planet where they learn and
grow up in order to bring the rest of that planet into a state of
peaceful existence, ridding it of the evil that has destroyed the
land beyond the river.
For courses in Technical Communication. This version of Technical
Communication: Process and Product has been updated to reflect the
8th Edition of the MLA Handbook (April 2016)* A focus on oral and
written correspondence in all fields Technical Communication:
Process and Product shows students how to produce all forms of
written and oral technical communication with easy-to-follow
instructions. Interesting scenarios and examples featuring real
people on the job make the text relatable to students of all
majors. The Ninth Edition builds upon the authors' proven
methodology, emphasizes the writing process, and shows students how
it applies to both written and oral communication. By showcasing
real employees in communication scenarios across a wide range of
disciplines - from engineering, to consulting, banking,
construction, and biotechnology - the authors showcase the
importance of strong communication skills within every field. * The
8th Edition introduces sweeping changes to the philosophy and
details of MLA works cited entries. Responding to the "increasing
mobility of texts," MLA now encourages writers to focus on the
process of crafting the citation, beginning with the same questions
for any source. These changes, then, align with current best
practices in the teaching of writing which privilege inquiry and
critical thinking over rote recall and rule-following.
Do economics and statistics succeed in explaining human social
behaviour? To answer this question. Leland Gerson Neuberg studies
some pioneering controlled social experiments. Starting in the late
1960s, economists and statisticians sought to improve social policy
formation with random assignment experiments such as those that
provided income guarantees in the form of a negative income tax.
This book explores anomalies in the conceptual basis of such
experiments and in the foundations of statistics and economics more
generally. Scientific inquiry always faces certain philosophical
problems. Controlled experiments of human social behaviour,
however, cannot avoid some methodological difficulties not evident
in physical science experiments. Drawing upon several examples, the
author argues that methodological anomalies prevent microeconomics
and statistics from explaining human social behaviour as coherently
as the physical sciences explain nature. He concludes that
controlled social experiments are a frequently overrated tool for
social policy improvement.
The editors of Beyond Trauma: Cultural and Societal Dynamics have
created a volume that goes beyond the individual's psychological
dynamics of trauma, exploring its social, cultural, politica , and
ethical dimensions from an international as well as a global
perspective. In the opening address as International Chair of the
First World Conference of the International Society for Traumatic
Stress Studies on Trauma and Tragedy: The Origins, Management, and
Prevention of Traumatic Stress in Today's World, June 22-26, 1992,
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the conference that formed the
foundation for the col lected chapters in this volume, 1 commented:
This meeting is a landmark in accomplishing the Society's universal
mission. Our distinguished International Scientific Advisory
Committee and Honor ary Committee, whose membership was drawn from
over 60 countries, the cooperation of six United Nations bodies,
and the participation anei endorse ment of numerous nongovernmental
organizations and institutions attest to the Society's emerging
presence as a major international forum for profes sionals of ali
disciplines working with victims and trauma survivors."
The works of Aristotle are central to the western philosophical
tradition, and scholarship on Aristotle, especially in English, has
burgeoned enormously since the 1950s. This text collects together
articles on Aristotle's philosophy otherwise scattered over many
philosophical, classical and historical scientific journals. The
set thus provides a resource for those approaching the literature
for the first time and for those already studying Aristotle in a
professional capacity. Aristotle has been so influential and
remains so in so many distinct areas that it is often the case
that, say, a reader is acquainted with the literature on
metaphysics or ethics but knows nothing about the literature on
psychology or the philosophy of biology. This set guides the
researcher, teacher, or student through the issues of major concern
in contemporary Aristotelian scholarship in the English-speaking
world. The articles are arranged as follows: Volume I covers logic
and metaphysics; Volume II covers physics, cosmology, biology;
Volume III covers psychology and ethics; and Volume IV covers
politics, rhetoric and aesthetics.
