This textbook provides an introduction to the scientific study of
sociology and other social sciences. It offers the basic tools
necessary for readers to become both critical consumers and
beginning producers of scientific research on society. The authors
present an integrated approach to research design and empirical
analyses in which researchers can develop and test causal theories.
They use examples from social science research that students will
find engaging and inspiring and that will help them to understand
key concepts. The book makes technical materials accessible to
students who might otherwise be intimidated by mathematical
examples. This new text, with the addition of sociologist Steven A.
Tuch to the author team, follows the successful format, approach,
and pedagogical features in Paul M. Kellstedt and Guy D. Whitten's
bestselling text, The Fundamentals of Political Science Research,
now in its third edition. Workbooks in Stata, SPSS, and R, three of
the most popular statistical analysis programs, are available as
separate purchases to accompany this textbook, enabling students to
connect the lessons of this book to hands-on applications of the
software.
Budgeting is a key aspect of governmental behaviour. Research on
budgeting has taken various theoretical and methodological
approaches, and these differences have prevented scholars from
discussing their common topic. In this collection, we have gathered
a group of prominent scholars to explore the intermingling of
budgets and politics from an assortment of theoretical and
methodological perspectives. It highlights not only the breadth of
current research but also the range of what remains underexplored.
This book was originally published as a special issue of the
Journal of European Public Policy.
While governments prefer to alter budgets to fit their ideological
stances, the domestic and international contexts can facilitate or
constrain behavior. The Politics of Budgets demonstrates when
governments do and do not make preferred budgetary changes. It
argues for an interconnected view of budgets and explores both the
reallocation of expenditures across policy areas and the interplay
among budgetary components. While previous scholars have
investigated how politics and economics shape a single budgetary
category, or collective categories, this methodologically rich
study analyzes data for thirty-three countries across thirty-five
years to provide a more comprehensive theoretical approach: a
'holistic' framework about the competition and contexts around the
budgetary process and an of examination of how and when these
factors affect the budgetary decision-making processes.

A Stata Companion for The Fundamentals of Social Research offers
students the opportunity to delve into the world of Stata using
real data sets and statistical analysis techniques directly from
Paul M. Kellstedt, Guy D. Whitten, and Steven A. Tuch's new
textbook. Workbook sections parallel chapters in the main text,
giving students a chance to apply the lessons and techniques
learned in each chapter in a statistical software setting. Detailed
chapters teach students to reproduce results presented in the
textbook, allowing them to become comfortable performing
statistical analyses for evaluating causal claims through repeated
practice. Step-by-step instructions for using Stata are provided,
along with command lines and screenshots to demonstrate proper use
of the software. Instructions for producing the figures and tables
in the main text are integrated throughout the workbook.
End-of-chapter exercises encourage students to formulate and
evaluate their own hypotheses.
An SPSS Companion for The Fundamentals of Social Research offers
students the opportunity to delve into the world of SPSS using real
data sets and statistical analysis techniques directly from Paul M.

An SPSS Companion for the Third Edition of The Fundamentals of
Political Science Research offers students a chance to delve into
the world of SPSS using real political science data sets and
statistical analysis techniques directly from Paul M. Kellstedt and
Guy D. Whitten's best-selling textbook. Built in parallel with the
main text, this workbook teaches students to apply the techniques
they learn in each chapter by reproducing the analyses and results
from each lesson using SPSS. Students will also learn to create all
of the tables and figures found in the textbook, leading to an even
greater mastery of the core material. This accessible, informative,

The third edition of the best-selling The Fundamentals of Political
Science Research provides an introduction to the scientific study
of politics. It offers the basic tools necessary for readers to
become both critical consumers and beginning producers of
scientific research on politics. The authors present an integrated
approach to research design and empirical analyses whereby
researchers can develop and test causal theories. They use examples
from political science research that students will find interesting
and inspiring, and that will help them understand key concepts. The
book makes technical material accessible to students who might
otherwise be intimidated by mathematical examples. This revised
third edition features new 'Your Turn' boxes meant to engage
students. The edition also has new sections added throughout the
book to enhance the content's clarity and breadth of coverage.
Paul M. Kellstedt s and Guy D. Whitten s The Fundamentals of
Political Science Research provides an introduction to the
scientific study of politics, supplying students with the basic
tools needed to be both critical consumers and producers of
scholarly research in political science. The book begins with a
discussion of what it means to take a scientific approach to the
study of politics. At the core of such an approach is the
development of causal theories. Because there is no magic formula
by which theories are developed, the authors present a series of
strategies and develop an integrated approach to research design
and empirical analyses that allows students to determine the
plausibility of their causal theories. The text s accessible
presentation of mathematical concepts and regression models with
two or more independent variables is a key component to this
process, along with the integration of examples from political
science and the real world to help students grasp the fundamental
concepts.
