After finishing his comparative study and family classification of the monocots, he devoted much energy to the acquisition and editing of family treatments for the present series. After his untimely death, Peter Goldblatt, who had worked with him, continued to handle further incoming monocot manuscripts until, in the early 1990s, his other obligations no longer allowed him to continue. At that time, some 30 manuscripts in various states of perfection had accumulated, which seemed to form a solid basis for a speedy completion of the FGVP monocots; with the exception of the grasses and orchids which would appear in separate volumes. I felt a strong obligation to do everything to help in publishing the manuscripts that had been put into our hands. Zur Laboratoriumsdiagnose hamatologischer und immunologischer Er- krankungen liegen im deutschen Schrifttum erst wenige zusammenfassende Darstellungen vor. Das vorliegende Buch wendet sich einerseits an Arzte, die vorwiegend am Krankenbett tatig sind. Ihnen moge es die Inter- pretation und rationeile Anwendung von Laboratoriumstesten, welche in dies en Spezialgebieten zielfiihrend sind, erleichtern. Fiir den Laboratoriums- mediziner andererseits ist der ausfiihrliche Methodenteil gedacht, welcher die Technik im Detail bespricht sowie ihre Fehlermoglichkeiten und Grenzen diskutiert. Auf die Darstellung immunologischer Methoden wurde besonderer Wert gelegt, da sie zunehmend an diagnostischer Bedeutung gewinnen. Es ist ein Hauptanliegen der Autoren, sie einem breiteren Kreis von Klinikern und Laboratoriumsmedizinern naherzubringen. Bei den hamato- logischen Methoden wurden vorwiegend die modernen Aspekte beriick- sichtigt. Eine Abhandlung iiber Storungen der Blutgerinnung hatte den gesetzten Rahmen iiberschritten. Die Autoren konnen auf eine langjahrige Erfahrung und internationale Ausbildung zuriickblicken. Aile in diesem Buch angefiihrten Labora- toriumsmethoden stehen an der Innsbrucker Medizinischen Klinik in jahrelanger Erprobung bzw. sind von den Autoren in das klinische Labora- torium eingefiihrt worden. Aus dieser groBen Erfahrung ergibt sich die Rechtfertigung zur Abfassung dieses Werkes, welches durchwegs eine personliche Aussage und Steilungnahme darsteilt. Die Bestandsaufnahme ware jedoch nicht moglich gewesen ohne die standige Forderung durch die zustandigen Steilen des Bundes, durch die finanzielle Unterstiitzung des Fonds "Kampf dem Krebs" und schlieBlich in ganz besonderem MaBe durch die Hilfe der Tiroler Landesregierung, die durch Dotierung mit medizinisch-technischen Assistentinnen und viel- fache materielle Untersmtzung dieses Aufbauwerk ermoglichte. Hierfiir mochte ich im Namen der Autoren auch offentlich den Dank aussprechen.

Hinsichtlich der Anordnung des Stoffes glaubte ich mich an jene organische Gliederung anlehnen zu mussen, wie sie R. SCHRODER in seinem Lehrbuch und hinsichtlich der Menstruationsstorungen in seiner monumental en Darstellung "Der Genitalzyklus des Weibes und seine Storungen" im VEIT-STOECKELschen Handbuch bringt. Da unsere therapeutischen MaBnahmen, wo immer es angeht, von atiologischen Gesichtspunkten geleitet sein mussen, schien es mir unerlaBlich, allent- halben die Atiologie im Hinblick auf die Therapie besonders zu betonen. Aber auch die so mannigfachen "klein en Leiden", die uns in ihren Ursachen nicht immer klar sind, muBten volle Wurdigung finden, sind sie doch so oft Gegenstand beweglicher Klagen in der Sprechstunde und erheischen ebenso Behebung wie die typischen Krankheitsbilder. Bei der Abfassung des Buches wurde auch darauf geachtet, es nicht bloB fUr die zusammenhangende Lekture, sondern ebenso als Nach- schlagewerk fUr einzelne, augenblicklich wissenswerte therapeutische Fragen verwendbar zu machen. Deswegen ist das Sach- und Medika- mentenverzeichnis besonders ausfuhrlich gehalten und so gearbeitet, daB auch gesuchte Rezeptvorschriften sofort auffindbar sind. lch wurde mich ghicklich schatzen, wenn das Buch die praktizierenden A.rzte bei ihrer oft muhevollen Aufgabe, kranke Frauen erfolgreich gynakologisch zu behandeln und zu beraten, unterstutzen wiirde.
