This book studies the Chinese "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI),
also called "New Silk Road", and focuses on its regional and local
effects. Written by experts from various fields, it presents a
range of case studies on the geopolitical, socio-economic,
ecological and cultural implications of the BRI for European
regions and their stakeholders. The book is divided into four
parts, the first of which discusses the history of and China's
motivations for the BRI. The second part explores the global
phenomenon from a number of regional standpoints. In turn, the
third part presents studies on the political, socio-economic,
cultural and ecological implications of the New Silk Road project.
The final part highlights the tourism prospects in connection with
the Silk Road project, as tourism has established itself as an
important economic sector in many regions along the historic Silk
Road. This book will appeal to scholars of economics, international
relations and tourism, decision-makers, managers, chambers of
commerce and entrepreneurs with special interests in establishing
collaboration with the Chinese market.
This book calls for rethinking the meaning of sustainable
development in tourism and explores how sustainability and
resilience could be integrated. It argues that these concepts
should be seen as interwoven processes, rather than alternative
approaches. Resilience should be understood as a fundamental part
of sustainable tourism thinking for destination systems. This can
be achieved by calling for better governance in implementation and
management. With insights from leading experts, chapters focus on
resilient destinations from this governance perspective, in which
tourism resilience is contextualized as an integral part of pathway
creation in the process of moving towards sustainable tourism. The
chapters represent a range of theoretical and empirical approaches
with a wide international scope to demonstrate how governance is
the key issue in sustainable tourism development. This book will
appeal to a wide range of research disciplines and students whose
modules focus on the relationship between tourism with respect to
sustainability planning, governance, environment, and hazards and
disasters.
This book explains and analyzes entrepreneurship and cultural
management issues in the creative and cultural sectors and
discusses the impacts of economic, social and structural changes on
cultural entrepreneurship. The expert contributions investigate the
role of cultural entrepreneurship in regional and destination
management and development by presenting best practice examples. It
offers various interdisciplinary approaches, including perspectives
from the fields of entrepreneurship and management, regional and
destination management and development, sociology, psychology,
innovation as well as creative industries, and also features
articles exploring cultural entrepreneurship on a corporate as well
as on a spatial level - or in other words in regions and
destinations.
Overtourism explores a growing phenomenon in tourism that is
currently creating tensions in both urban and rural tourist
destinations worldwide. This volume proposes a framework for a
series of possible solutions and management strategies for dealing
with overtourism and the various negative impacts that large
quantities of tourists can impose. Questioning the causes of this
phenomenon - such as increased prosperity and mobility,
technological development, issues of security and stigma for
certain parts of the world, and so on - this book supposes that
better visitor management strategies and distribution of tourists
can offset the negative impacts of overtourism. Individual chapters
focus on a range of destinations including Venice, Barcelona and
Dubrovnik, as well as UNESCO cultural and natural heritage sites,
where local political actors and public authorities are not always
able to deal with the situation effectively. Integrating research
and practice, this book will be of great interest to upper-level
students, researchers and academics in tourism, development
studies, cultural studies and sustainability, as well as
professionals in the field of tourism management.
This book examines the current use of digital media in religious
engagement and how new media can influence and alter faith and
spirituality. As technologies are introduced and improved, they
continue to raise pressing questions about the impact, both
positive and negative, that they have on the lives of those that
use them. The book also deals with some of the more futuristic and
speculative topics related to transhumanism and digitalization.
Including an international group of contributors from a variety of
disciplines, chapters address the intersection of religion and
digital media from multiple perspectives. Divided into two
sections, the chapters included in the first section of the book
present case studies from five major religions: Christianity,
Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Judaism and their engagement with
digitalization. The second section of the volume explores the
moral, ideological but also ontological implications of our
increasingly digital lives. This book provides a uniquely
comprehensive overview of the development of religion and
spirituality in the digital age. As such, it will be of keen
interest to scholars of Digital Religion, Religion and Media,
Religion and Sociology, as well as Religious Studies and New Media
more generally, but also for every student interested in the future
of religion and spirituality in a completely digitalized world.

Dr Pechlaner and Dr Innerhofer, the editors of Competence-Based
Innovation in Hospitality and Tourism, argue that the industry
operates within highly challenging and competitive environments.
Changing environmental and market conditions continually force
hotel businesses and service providers to offer their customers new
and modified products and services, in order to remain competitive;
those which respect value perceptions of markets and sustainable
stakeholder reactions. This then raises the question of how
innovations within this industry must be developed in order to
achieve competitive differentiation. The book demonstrates that the
development and analysis of successful innovation strategies should
integrate the resource-based view and its advancements, the
competence-based view, as well as the dynamic capabilities approach
and the relational view. Resource-based strategic management
approaches view the firm as a bundle of resources and competences.
They point to the importance of firm-specific resources and
competences in explaining variations in competitive positions and
performance differentiation between companies. The challenge of
hospitality and tourism is to develop resources and competences
that drive innovations. This book will serve to advance the status
quo of tourism research literature by combining innovation theories
with network theories and tourism and destination development, by
illustrating the development of cooperative competences and
innovations in tourism and by showing, in a tailored way, how the
challenge of the development of resources and competences that
drive innovations in tourism can be managed.
The nature of work is changing, due to demographic shifts,
globalization, and digitization. Regional local labor markets are
in global competition for (highly) qualified and specialized
workers. At the same time, the workforce's desire for flexibility
and the increasing speed at which skill requirements are changing
are producing disparities at the spatial, social, and economic
levels. This book discusses the global and local drivers behind
these developments. It explores the factors which cause global
inequalities between urban and rural areas, and highlights how
cities, regions and countries attract these sought-after employees
to address skills shortages. The book includes an in-depth case
study on high-skilled workers in South Tyrol, Italy. No single
academic discipline can adequately capture the dynamics of the
future labor market, and the authors therefore take an
interdisciplinary approach, combining insights from different
disciplines. This book will be a valuable resource for
policymakers, students and researchers seeking to understand the
driving forces behind the ever-changing labor market and the future
of high-skilled work.

The Festschrift in honor of Prof. Dr. Peter Keller, president of
the International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism
(AIEST) since 1994, represents a wide range of tourism research as
well as the current state of the ongoing debates in tourism as a
scientific research field. The aim is to cover multiple topics and
trends in travelling and to discuss future development
possibilities in the leisure industry.
"Governance is about managing networks". This quote from political
scientist Rod A.W. Rhodes pioneered a whole series of governance
studies in different disciplines. Accordingly, destination
governance describes the collective management of tourism
destinations. Promoting collective action in tourism destinations
means dealing with a myriad of different actors and applying
various instruments. Probably the most basic requirement is to take
into account the peculiarities of every single destination.
Therefore, this book approaches the issue of contemporary
destination governance from a case study point of view focusing on
16 destinations. In contrast to other publications in the field of
destination governance, the book concentrates on the discussion of
cases and the peculiarities of destinations which influence the
destination governance. It demonstrates how different theories from
the fields of organizational studies, strategic management, tourism
research and sociology can enlighten our understanding of
particular real-world situations. Last but not least the bottom-up
approach supports practitioners and students by making otherwise
complex theories accessible to a broader audience.
This book uncovers the current knowledge on entrepreneurial
cultures and the development of entrepreneurial ecosystems between
Asia and Europe. Broadening the scope spatially and conceptually,
the book discusses the entrepreneurial ecosystems as a system and
mediator in their cultural, political, and socio-economic settings
in an interdisciplinary approach. This allows a clearer perspective
on stakeholders' interaction, international collaboration and
competition, power relations, and political influence. The various
chapters in this edited volume cover the peculiarities and
differences in Asia, Europe, and Eurasia with the New Silk Road (or
Belt and Road Initiative) as the bridging component. The chapters,
written for researchers and policy makers interested in
Asian-European cooperation, also include discussions on economic
systems, globalization, and regionalization, politics, cultures,
and digitalization.
