The Irishman (DVD): Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel The Irishman (DVD)
Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, …
R380 Discovery Miles 3 800 In stock

Martin Scorsese’s cinematic mastery is on full display in this sweeping crime saga, which serves as an elegiac summation of his six-decade career.

Left behind by the world, former hit man and union truck driver Frank Sheeran (Robert DeNiro) looks back from a nursing home on his life’s journey through the ranks of organized crime: from his involvement with Philadelphia mob boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) to his association with Teamsters union head Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) to the rift that forced him to choose between the two.

An intimate story of loyalty and betrayal writ large across the epic canvas of mid-twentieth-century American history, The Irishman (based on the real-life Sheeran’s confessions, as told to writer Charles Brandt for the book I Heard You Paint Houses) is a uniquely reflective late-career triumph that balances its director’s virtuoso set pieces with a profoundly personal rumination on aging, mortality, and the decisions and regrets that shape a life.

(Nominated for 10 Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Al Pacino), Best Supporting Actor (Joe Pesci), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects)

The 25th Anniversary Blu-ray release of Goodfellas, Martin Scorsese's unforgettable film which looks at the power and brutality of mob life, features a new documentary with interviews from Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta and more, and a 36-page photo book exploring the film’s far-reaching influence. The book also includes a letter written by Martin Scorsese. Cited by film critic Roger Ebert as “the best mob movie ever”, the 2-disc Blu-ray has been remastered from a 4k scan of the original camera negative, supervised by Scorsese himself.

Goodfellas explores the criminal life like no other movie. Following the rise and fall of a trio of gangsters over 30 years, it’s an electrifying, fact-inspired tale of living – and dying.

Based on the true life best seller “Wiseguy” by Nicholas Pileggi, the film earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director and was named 1990’s ‘Best Film’ by the New York, Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics.

Lethal Weapon (1987)
Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is a family man cop who is about to turn fifty. Cautious by nature, he is less than happy to be paired with hothead Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) when he is assigned to investigate Californian drug baron 'The General' (Mitchell Ryan). Following the death of his wife, Riggs has become a manic loner who no longer cares whether he lives or dies - an approach which causes more than a few problems as he and Murtaugh attempt to bring the General to justice.

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)
Riggs (Gibson) and his partner Murtaugh (Glover) once again tackle the evils of drug smuggling, this time coming up against a South African syndicate whose kingpins are protected by diplomatic immunity.

Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)
Detectives Murtaugh (Glover) and Riggs (Gibson) are both demoted after triggering a car bomb in a multi-storey car park, but they are soon reinstated after uncovering a network - run by an ex-cop - which is smuggling weapons out of a police ammunition dump.

Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)
Mismatched cops Riggs (Gibson) and Murtaugh (Glover) team up for a fourth time to foil an immigrant smuggling racket, run by a ruthless Asian Triad leader (Jet Li). Joe Pesci also returns as Leo Getz, the cops' cowardly informant whilst Rene Russo lightens the boys with toys atmosphere as risk-taking detective Lorna Cole.

Oliver Stone's detailed examination of possible answers to unsolved mysteries surrounding John F. Kennedy's assassination. Kevin Costner plays New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, who remained unconvinced by the Warren Commission Report and launched his own investigation. This film was released on a wave of controversy and led to calls for Congress to re-open government records from the 1977 House Select Committee on the assassination. Stone weaves actual archive footage with historical reconstruction and conjecture to present his argument that Kennedy was killed by the CIA due to his desire to withdraw troops from Vietnam. The film gained several Oscar nominations and Stone won a Golden Globe award for Best Director.

A box set containing the original and the 3 sequels to the film that launched Macaulay Culkin's career. In 'Home Alone' (1990) ten-year-old Kevin (Culkin) is banished to his room while his family prepare for a Christmas trip to Europe. He wakes up to find they have inadvertently left without him. Kevin must cope not only with life on his own but also with the threat of two persistent, albeit incompetent, burglars. Meanwhile, his mother vainly tries to find a way to get back home. 'Home Alone 2' (1992) sees Kevin McCallister (Culkin) get separated from his family at Christmas time again. This time, they're in Florida and he's in New York, and the two bumbling gangsters from the first film (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) are out of jail and on Kevin's trail. Whilst in 'Home Alone 3' (1997) a band of hi-tech thieves have stolen a top-secret computer chip, and placed it inside a toy car. However, through a series of mishaps the car finds its way to Alex Pruitt (Alex D. Linz), who is alone at home with the chicken pox. The thieves track Alex down, but their attempts to retrieve the chip are all thwarted by the young whiz-kid. Finally, 'Home Alone 4' (2002) is a made-for-TV film. Kevin McAllister returns (played by Macaulay Culkin look-alike Mike Weinberg) and once again finds himself left alone in an empty house; this time it is a hi-tech safe-house, owned by the girlfriend of his recently divorced father. The house is being used by a royal heir and Kevin (in his usual style) manages to see off potential kidnappers whilst also making sure his parents get back together.

Collection of contemporary gangster films. In 'Mean Streets' (1973) four Italian-Americans from New York's lower East Side hang around at a local bar. Charlie (Harvey Keitel), the most responsible of the group, tries to protect his girlfriend's cousin, Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro), from the local debt collectors, but his young charge seems determined to live fast and die young. Heavily influenced by the French New Wave, 'Mean Streets' provided the first high-profile success for director Martin Scorsese and star De Niro. In 'Scarface' (1983), up-and-coming gangster Tony Montana (Al Pacino) arrives in Miami as a Cuban refugee. With his friend Manny (Stephen Bauer), Tony carries out a hit on a politician, earning him the gratitude of drug dealer Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia). Tony rises rapidly in the 'organization', but courts disaster when he becomes involved with Lopez's cocaine-addicted wife, Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer). In 'Carlito's Way' (1993), Carlito (Pacino) is a Hispanic drugs boss just released from prison. Determined to go straight and move to the Bahamas with his girlfriend, Gail (Penelope Ann Miller), Carlito is tempted back to the wrong side of the law by his lawyer, nerdish coke-head David Kleinfeld (Sean Penn), for 'one last job'. Brian De Palma directs this visually eloquent film about a man's inevitable tragic demise with his familiar penchant for the big set piece and violent action. In 'Casino' (1995), Sam 'Ace' Rothstein (De Niro) is the mob's frontman for a billion dollar Las Vegas casino. The story begins in 1973; Ace falls for hooker Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone), while boyhood companion Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) is appointed as his muscle at the club. Over the years various jealousies surface and erupt in a series of violent betrayals and, ultimately, the destruction of Rothstein's empire. In 'American Gangster' (2007), when his boss dies, underworld driver Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) seizes his chance and begins to build his own criminal empire. Utilising the bodies of dead US soldiers, Lucas begins importing heroin direct from South-East Asia, increasing purity on the street, and undercutting his rivals in one swoop. Before long he's amassed a fortune, bringing him to the attention of maverick policeman Ritchie Roberts (Russell Crowe), an honest cop in an otherwise corrupt force, who makes it his business to shut Lucas down. Finally, in 'Public Enemies' (2009), set in 1930s gangland America, Johnny Depp stars as the charismatic bank robber John Dillinger. Dillinger's audacious raids and subsequent jailbreaks thrilled the American public as their sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into Depression reached an all-time low. Despite his status as a folk hero, Dillinger was declared 'Public Enemy Number One' by J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) and became the prime target of Hoover's fledgling FBI, headed by Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale). Marion Cotillard co-stars as gangster's moll Billie Frechette.

When they arrive in the small town they continue on their path of hatred, harrassment and destruction until they come across two resilient college kids determined to stop the skinheads' reign of violence. When a Hollywood film crew travel to shoot on an isolated desert location they are attacked by CIA-backed mercenaries. At first the film people fight back using their special effects equipment, but as the carnage mounts they sustain heavy losses, and soon the director's daughter is the only one still alive. She then teams up with one of the embittered mercenaries to better her chances of surviving. 'Hiroshima' (1990) paints a dramatic account of the race to develop the atomic bomb, the ethics and politics behind it, and the events which led to its use at the end of World War 2. In 'Emperor' (1988), Tony (Alex D'Andrea) is a Bronx street hustler, an old-fashioned, low-level operator who finds himself forced off his turf by vicious crime boss Falco (Anthony Gioia). Teaming up with an ex-con and sultry songstress, he learns a few things about the way of the world and makes an attempt to get back on the right side of the wrong side of the tracks - taking the fight back to Falco. In 'South Bronx' (1985), two young children are being brutally exploited as their foster home moonlights as the headquarters for one of the city's largest pornography rings. Amazingly, the two children escape to the streets, where they enlist the help of an undercover cop (Mario Van Peebles) and his partner to capture the porn king and his accomplices. In 'The Swap' (1969) Robert DeNiro plays Sammy Nicoletti, an adult film director who is murdered. His brother Vito (Anthony Charnota) vows to find the killer and avenge Sammy's death. When Vito is released from prison he begins his own investigation, encountering deceit and blackmail. The final days of Sammy's life unfold from a party on Long Island back to the big city. As Vito draws nearer to the truth, his own life hangs precariously in the balance. In 'Death Collector' (1975) it's 'all in the family' for a young, streetwise hood as he becomes a collector for the mob. He quickly rises, run by rung, up the ladder of the underworld in this violent crime saga. Blaxploitation legend Fred 'The Hammer' Williamson stars in 'Black Cobra' (1987). When fashion photographer Elys Trumbo (Eva Grimaldi) sees one of her neighbours being murdered by a member of the Black Cobras, a psychopathic motorcycle gang, she manages to catch the killer's face on film. The Cobras' leader comes after her, but luckily tough police sergeant Malone (Williamson) has been appointed to protect her. In 'Born To Win' (1971), George Segal stars as as an ex-hairdresser who struggles to support his expensive drug habit and to avoid arrest, turns 'narc', informing on his fellow junkies. Eventually Segal's sense of self-hatred threatens to overwhelm him. In 'Revenge' (1988), the gun-crazy right-wing terrorist group 'Strike Force' have set their sights on the deadly NK-2, which is a very large weapon indeed, and will do everything in their power to get hold of it. Vietnam vet Jason Shepherd (Roger Rodd) is approached with the job of tracking down these vicious killers and preventing them from doing any more damage. He accepts the job, but when the group gun down two of his most loyal friends, it suddenly becomes personal.
