Stories do not actually exist in the (fictional or factual) world but are constituted, structured and endowed with meaning through the process of mediation, i.e. they are represented and transmitted through systems of verbal, visual or audio-visual signs. The terms usually proposed to describe aspects of mediation, especially perspective, point of view, and focalization, have yet to bring clarity to this field, which is of central importance, not only for narratology but also for literary and media studies. One crucial problem about mediation concerns the dimensions of its modeling effect, particularly the precise status and constellation of the mediating agents, i.e. author, narrator or presenter and characters. The question is how are the structure and the meaning of the story conditioned by these different positions in relation to the mediated happenings perceived from outside and/or inside the storyworld? In this volume, fourteen articles by international scholars from seven different countries address these problems anew from various angles, reviewing the sub-categorization of mediation and re-specifying its dimensions both in literary texts and other media such as drama and theater, film, and computer games.

This handbook in English provides a systematic overview of the present state of international research in narratology. Detailed individual studies by internationally renowned narratologists elucidate 34 central terms. The articles present original research contributions and are all structured in a similar manner. Each contains a concise definition and a detailed explanation of the term in question. In a main section they present a critical account of the major research positions and their historical development and indicate directions for future research; they conclude with selected bibliographical references.

The volume addresses methodological questions raised by a sociological and socio-historical approach to literary history and tests them in ten studies on the theory and practice of the historiography of literature written in German. JArg SchAnert examines problems of genre theory and genre history raised by satire and detective fiction and analyses text corpora by J. H. Campe, J. K. Wezel, H. v. Kleist, B. Auerbach, G. Keller, K. E. Franzos and F. Wedekind. The author sees the book as documenting an important position taken up in the a oeMethods debatea conducted since the 1970s.

Following the volumes ALiterature and CrimeA (1983, STSL 8) and ACrime NarratedA (1991, STSL 27) the articles assembled here examine discourses serving the social construction of deviation, criminality, and justice/jurisdiction together with typical constellations of the way these have been representeed by the (mass) media in the 20th century. In addition, theoretical articles on the connection between 'transgression' and 'order' on the basis of recent research into the representation of crime and crime-fighting institutions in Germany and the United States are joined by contributions on the criminological, juridical, and political discourses of the present to assist in placing the case studies in their systematic and historical context.

The theme of this volume, 'knowledge in literature', refers not to the way in which literature communicates cultural phenomena, events, and norms regulating or reflecting everyday action and behaviour. Instead, it focuses on the 'new knowledge' about nature and the human animal produced (or rejected) in individual branches of science and learning since the 17th century and the changes it has effected in human and social self-interpretation. The consequence of this has been a spate of rival concepts of nature and representation and new forms of literary penetration and appropriation of knowledge that display repercussions both on literature itself and on science, philosophy and the humanities.

In the last ten years, George Tabori (* 1914) has been one of the dramatic authors most frequently performed this century in Germany and also one of the most sought-after directors in German-speaking theatres. This contrasts with the neglect he has been accorded in literary and drama studies. Only very recently has there been any notable change in this situation. This volume sets out to record and contribute to the ongoing discussion of Tabori's achievements, both his stage productions and his own plays, on the subject of the shoah. A comparative angle is also taken on his work, examining and discussing the significance of his theatrical style for contemporary drama with reference to authors such as Bertolt Brecht, Samuel Beckett and Peter Weiss.

Die modernen (Natur-)Wissenschaften trugen zur 'Verweltlichung' der Wahrnehmung und des Denkens bei. Das aus drei Teilbanden bestehende Werk setzt sich zum Ziel aufzuzeigen, wie unterschiedlich dieser Beitrag der Wissenschaften von Fall zu Fall war: Dass z.B. oft eher von einer 'Christianisierung' des Denkens gesprochen werden muss und dass selbst die 'Freygeisterei' nicht unmittelbar 'verweltlichend' wirkte. An ausgewahlten Beispielen aus Wissenschaft und Literatur der Fruhen Neuzeit (mit Ausblicken auf das fruhe 19. Jahrhundert) wird dabei nicht nur der Begriff der 'Sakularisierung' historisch und systematisch fruchtbar gemacht, sondern auch - und anders als in einem betrachtlichen Teil gegenwartiger Forschung - als Beschreibung fur einen langfristigen Gewinn von 'Erkenntnis', Wissen und Einsicht in naturliche Zusammenhange beibehalten. Der erste Band untersucht monographisch fruhneuzeitliche Sakularisierungsprozesse am Beispiel des medizinischen Diskurses in der Literatur. Der zweite Band bietet systematisch aufeinander abgestimmte Einzelstudien zu Phanomenen der 'Verweltlichung' in Philosophie, Jurisprudenz, Theologie, Kunst und Literatur. Der dritte Band geht den seit der Antike vorgepragten Vorstellungen von der Ganzheit und der Teilbarkeit von Koerpern nach. Die Anatomie schafft die Voraussetzungen dafur, durch analysis und anatomia als methodischen Verfahren die innere wie aussere Konstitution des Text-Koerpers wie des Natur-Koerpers sichtbar werden zu lassen. Die Bande schaffen so eine begriffliche und analytische Fundierung des Begriffs 'Sakularisierung', d.h. eines zentralen Begriffs fur die Erforschung der fruhneuzeitlichen Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte.

Der erste Band der neuen Reihe Historia Hermeneutica, die sich der Geschichte der hermeneutischen Theoriebildung in Europa von der Reformation bis in die Moderne (ca. 1500 - 1850) widmet, untersucht die Geschichte der Textinterpretation und ihrer Methodik in den fruhneuzeitlichen Wissenschaften (Theologie, Philosophie, Poetik, Jurisprudenz). Der Band versammelt grundlegende Studien ausgewiesener Fachleute, die aus geistes- und wissenschaftshistorischer Perspektive eine Brucke zwischen der traditionellen und der philosophischen Hermeneutik schlagen.

Lyric poetry is usually regarded as a genre in its own right, delineated from narrative and dramatic texts. This publication intends to use categories from narrative theory to develop the argument that poems also display basic characteristics seen as indicative of the narrative (in particular, the perspectivized presentation of sequentially ordered events). The results are firstly significant revisions of genre-theory, and secondly a considerable extension and precision in processes of textual analysis - including the use of scheme theory as used in cognitive psychology.

Narratologie hat sich mit theoretischen Konzepten zum Erzahlen und systematisch angelegten Verfahren zur Analyse von erzahlenden Texten seit den 1960er Jahren im nationalen und internationalen Zusammenhang der Wissenschaftskulturen entwickelt. Solche Prozesse werden in diesem Band mit Schwerpunkten fur die deutschsprachige und ungarische Literaturwissenschaft nachgezeichnet. Zudem wird gefragt, ob Narratologie fur die Analyse interkultureller publizistischer und belletristischer Texte besondere Fragestellungen und Verfahrensweisen ausarbeiten muss und mit welchen Kriterien die "Interkulturalitat" von Erzahltexten beschrieben werden kann.

Jungste Entwicklungen in den Geisteswissenschaften (so auch in den Philologien) sind gepragt von der Aufmerksamkeit fur kulturelle Pluralitat und interkulturelle Konstellationen. Dabei arbeiten interdisziplinar bestimmte Forschungen haufig mit Begriffen des Raumes. 'Grenzraume' orientieren sich hin zu einer zentralen Achse: der Grenze, die trennen, zuordnen oder verbinden kann. Solche Abgrenzungen und Grenzuberschreitungen sind als lebensgeschichtliche Erfahrungen und literarische Darstellungen das Thema der Beitrage dieses Bandes. Das Spektrum reicht vom Alten Testament bis hin zur Literatur der jungsten Gegenwart. Zum Paradigma fur Leben und Erfahrungen in Grenz- und Konfliktraumen wird dabei das judische Erbe unserer Geistes- und Kulturlandschaft.
