This volume contains the proceedings of the Ninth International
Symposium on Cyclodextrins, held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain,
May 31 - June 3, 1998. The papers collected represent a summary of
the last two years' achievements in the application of
cyclodextrins in such diverse fields as pharmaceuticals,
biotechnology, textiles, chromatography and environmental sciences.
Highlights: Chiral selection of chemicals, nuclear waste
management, cyclodextrins in nasal drug delivery, cyclodextrins in
pulmonary drug delivery, cyclodextrins as pharmaceutical
excipients, pharmacokinetics, stabilization of drugs by
cyclodextrins, structural characterization of cyclodextrin
complexes by nuclear magnetic resonance and molecular modeling,
artificial receptors, large cyclodextrins, cyclodextrins as enzyme
models, new cyclodextrin derivatives and potentials. Audience: This
book will be of interest to researchers whose work involves
biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, food and chemicals and
chromatographic methods, as well as fundamental cyclodextrin
research.
Despite the considerable amount of criticism that Vladimir
Nabokov's literary legacy has produced since the sixties, the
studies on his female characters are scarce, except the ones on
Lolita. This volume delves into Nabokov's women from different
perspectives and points of view. The contributions are from
different parts of the world, some from prominent scholars. These
Nabokovians study the gender issue in Nabokov's life and art,
paying tribute to his women. The volume has two closely connected
parts. In the first one, the reader can find biographical essays
that discuss the role of the real women in Nabokov's life and how
their love, support and suffering are reflected in his prose. The
second part deals with Nabokov's women in his fiction. There is a
discussion of the representation of female voices.
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has transformed the
educational scene and brought about a revolution of teaching
methods and principles in the bilingual education environment. The
major challenge in the implementation of a teacher education
curriculum in CLIL is the integration of different teaching
approaches to promote content and language mastery. What is certain
is that there is no fixed model for CLIL and that for resources to
be effective they have to be contextualized and motivating for both
teachers and students. The four Cs (Content, Cognition,
Communication and Culture) proposed by Coyle (1999) as framework
for CLIL implementations find in drama a powerful meeting point to
develop communicative skills and beyond. CLIL opens new
possibilities for the implementation of drama in its multiple
varieties: role-play, simulations, drama activities, educational
drama and so on. This book proposes articles on the possibilities
of drama as a challenging learning experience from primary to
higher education.

Writers have long been attracted to boxing. Hemingway, Mailer,
Algren, Plimpton, Oates, and many others have stepped into the
ring--at least in spirit--to give voice to an otherwise wordless
sport, to celebrate that "sweet science," and to bear witness to
its romance and tragedy. In this acclaimed book, hailed by Norman
Mailer as an "impressive event," we are brought for the first time
into the ring for a close-up look at the "manly art" through the
eyes of Jose Torres, a man who was a great boxer himself. When
former light-heavyweight world champion Torres traded in his gloves
for a typewriter, boxing finally found its eyewitness.
In the classic "Sting Like a Bee," Torres turns his well-trained
eye on one of the most celebrated and controversial athletes of all
time: Muhammad Ali. In this penetrating view of Ali and the world
of prizefighting, told by a true insider and "boxing's Renaissance
man," Torres delivers exciting and explicit accounts of all of
Ali's major fights with the cool authenticity of one who has lived
it.
