Within this context, the book addresses the topic Application of Physically Based Soil Erosion Models in order to present some essential tools for improving land-use strategies and conservation measures. Over the last 20 years, the need for more accurate assessments of soil losses and sediment yields has led to the development of some highly complex, process-based soil erosion models. In 14 papers, specialists from 5 European countries, the USA and Brazil report on practical applications of these models and give insight into the latest developments. This book will help to implement state-of-the-art soil erosion prediction technologies within soil and water conservation planning and assessment. Hence, the book should be of special interest to agricultural and environmental engineers, hydrologists, soil scientists and geoscientists.

REFLECTIONS ON SPACETIME - FOUNDATIONS, PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY During the academic year 1992/93, an interdisciplinary research group constituted itself at the Zentrum fUr interdisziplinare Forschung (ZiF) in Bielefeld, Germany, under the title 'Semantical Aspects of Spacetime Theories', in which philosophers and physicists worked on topics in the interpretation and history of relativity theory. The present issue consists of contributions resulting from material presented and discussed in the group during the course of that year. The scope of the papers ranges from rather specialised issues arising from general relativity such as the problem of referential indeterminacy, to foundational questions regarding spacetime in the work of Carnap, Weyl and Hilbert. It is well known that the General Theory of Relativity (GTR) admits spacetime models which are 'exotic' in the sense that observers could travel into their own past. This poses a number of problems for the physical interpretation of GTR which are also relevant in the philosophy of spacetime. It is not enough to exclude these exotic models simply by stating that we live in a non-exotic universe, because it might be possible to "operate time machines" by actively changing the topology of the future part of spacetime. In his contribution, Earman first reviews the attempts of physicists to prove "chronology protection theorems" (CPTs) which exclude the operation of time machines under reasonable assumptions.

These documents do nothing less than bear witness to one of the most dramatic changes in the foundations of science. The book has three sections that cover general relativity, epistemological issues, and quantum mechanics. This fascinating work will be a vital text for historians and philosophers of physics, as well as researchers in related physical theories.

The papers in this volume were presented at the colloquium "Reduktion in der Wissenschaft: Struktur, Beispiele, philos- ophische PrObleme", held in Bielefeld, West Germany, July 18- 21, 1983. The meeting itself brought together a sizeable group of logicians, philosophers and working scientists to discuss and debate the theme of reduction, one that occupies a central place in contemporary philosophy of science. The participants and contributors succeeded in opening up new directions in reduction studies and presenting fresh case studies of re- duction from many different areas of scientific practice. Their efforts will greatly enhance our understanding of reduction and, consequently, our grasp of the complex process of scien- tific change and the unity and growth of scientific knowledge.

August Bebel (1840-1913) was one of the towering figures of late nineteenth century European socialism and the leading figure of the German labour movement from the 1860s until his death in 1913. Born into a modest family, and a half-orphan from the age of four, his advancement to a pivotal role in the politics of Imperial Germany mirrored the success of German social democracy in this period. Bebel was not only the founder and first leader of the Social Democratic Workers Party of Germany (SDAP), a political movement that became the largest socialist party in nineteenth-century Europe, but he was also a powerful orator and leading member of the German parliament. He was described by contemporaries as the 'king of the German workers' and the 'shadow emperor' of Germany. In this biography, Jurgen Schmidt situates Bebel's life and career in the political, social and cultural history of modern Europe. He also provides an overview of the growth of the labour movement and working class political activism in late-nineteenth century Germany. This is an essential biography of one of Germany's most influential and unique politicians, living at a time of great political, social and industrial change in Europe.

Im Gegensatz zu einer Veroffentlichung uber formale statistische Methoden, die bei Neuauflagen in der Regel durch neuere Methoden erganzt wird, ist die Datengewinnung in der Wirtschafts- und Sozialstatistik von der Entwicklung der amtlichen und nicht amtlichen praktischen Statistik abhangig, was Veranderungen sowohl in den Erhebungsmethoden als auch bei den Erhebungen selbst mit sich bringt. Den Wandel stark beeinflusst haben insbesondere zwei Entwicklungen: die zunehmende Auswirkung der Statistik der Europaischen Gemeinschaft auf die nationale amtliche Statistik und der Aufbau der amtlichen Statistik im Beitrittsgebiet. Insofern wurden die Ausfuhrungen zu den konkreten Erhebungen in der Wirtschafts- und Sozialstatistik neu geschrieben (Kapitel 8, 9 und 10), wobei konzeptionell versucht wurde, sie in Berichtssysteme einzuordnen. Ausserdem wurde den nicht zufalligen Teilerhebungen wegen ihrer grossen praktischen Anwendung ein eigener Abschnitt (Kapitel 2) gewidmet. Gegenstand der Untersuchungen sind dabei die Sprachen Galicisch, Katalanisch, Baskisch, Bearnesisch, Bretonisch, Dolomitenladinisch, Venezianisch und Moldauisch. European private law exists not only as legislation in the form of directives and regulations of the European Union. The judicature and academia make contributions as well. Recently, academia (primarily) presented the Draft Common Frame of Reference, in which the Principles of European Contract Law (Lando Principles) are updated. In the judicature, the European Court of Justice recently caused a sensation in applying the General Rules of Law to private law relationships. These developments are discussed in the contributed articles in this volume.

Dass logistisches Denken mehr und mehr in fast allen Strategie-und Arbeitsebenen wirt- schaftlich gefuhrter Unternehmen Einzug halt, liegt vor allem in der Erkenntnis, dass Struk- turen und Prozesse nur dann noch weiter verbessert werden koennen, wenn sie ganzheitlich betrachtet werden. Im Vordergrund stehen dann die in und zwischen den Unternehmen aus- getauschten Leistungsobjekte als Roh-, Hilfs-, Betriebsstoff, als Baugruppe, Komponente, Fertigprodukt oder sonstige Austauschleistung und die zugehoerigen notwendigen Informa- tionen, Informationsstrukturen und Informationsablaufe. Die Logistik ist dann keine iso- lierte eigenstandige Leistung, sondern eine Dienstleistung fur die im Unternehmen und zwischen den Unternehmen festgelegten Leistungsvereinbarungen. Jahrelang waren logistische Betrachtungen auf konkrete physische Materialflusse be- schrankt. Hier galt es die fur den Transport, die Weitergabe und die Lagerung erforderli- chen Arbeiten so auszufuhren, dass die jeweiligen Beschaffungs-, Produktions-und Absatz- prozesse in sich optimal abgewickelt werden konnten. Eine Nutzung der Logistik fur eine gesamtheitliche Abstimmung der Leistungserstellungs-und -verwertungsprozesse war nicht oder nur untergeordnet vorgesehen. Erst mit den gestiegenen Anforderungen an Durchlaufzeiten fur Material und Information, an die Flexibilitat und Qualitat der Austauschprozesse und die Produktivitat und Wirt- schaftlichkeit wurde der Logistik eine wachsende Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Bis heute ist es jedoch noch nicht gelungen, die verschiedensten Ansatze und Sichtweisen in der Logistik so zu systematisieren, dass in allen praktischen Anwendungsfallen eine einheitliche Logi- stiksprache genutzt werden kann.

Die Einfuhrung und Nutzung von CAD-Systemen wirft weit uber die technischen Probleme hinaus insbesondere Fragen der Organisation und Gestaltung des Arbeitsprozesses in der Konstruktion und den angrenzenden Bereichen auf. Dieses Buch ist aus Vorlesungen und Sem inaren hervorgegangen, die ich seit fast 10 Jahren an der Padagogischen Hochschule in Dortmund fur Lehramtsstudenten der Sekundar- stufen I und 11 gehalten habe. Es sind aber auch Erfahrungen aus meiner Tatigkeit als Chemielehrer an der Volkshochschule Heidelberg und den drei Marler Gymnasien, bei Lehrerfortbildungsveranstaltungen (fur die Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker und andere Institutionen) und von vielen Vortragsveranstaltungen eingegangen.
