Such investigations typically take a case study approach and focus on the functional aspects of impairments. However, these interpretations are disconnected from disability theory discourse. Other social sciences and the humanities have far surpassed most of anthropology (with the exception of medical anthropology) in their integration of social theories of disability. This volume has three goals: The first goal of this edited volume is to present theoretical and methodological discussions on impairment and disability. The second goal of this volume is to emphasize the necessity of interdisciplinarity in discussions of impairment and disability within bioarchaeology. The third goal of the volume is to present various methodological approaches to quantifying impairment in skeletonized and mummified remains. Im Verbreitungsgebiet des Buntsandsteins sind derzeit in Hessen einige Ver- kehrstunnelbauten in Bau oder Planung, namlich der Strassentunnel der B 37 bei Hirschhorn am Neckar, der Strassentunnel fur die Umgehung des Ortsteils Oberrieden der B 27 bei Eschwege (Werra-Meissner-Kreis) und vor allem die ge- plante Neubaustrecke der Deutschen Bundesbahn von Hannover nach Wurzburg, mit allein in Hessen 29 Tunnelbauwerken mit einer Gesamtlange von rd. 61 Tunnelkilometern (Weber, Engels und Maak, 1979, Bild 1). Das Buntsandsteingebirge Ost- und Nordhessens gehort aufgrund seiner un- terschiedlichen Schichtausbildung, der tektonischen Beanspruchung und der gebietsweise auftretenden Erscheinungsformen des tiefen Salinarkarstes bezug- lich Tunnelbau zu den schwierigen Gebirgsformationen. Die modeme Buntsandsteingliederung ermoglicht es zwar heute, die Lage- rungsverhaltnisse und die tektonischen Strukturen des Gebirges weitaus besser zu erfassen als bisher, doch wird bei tektonisch starker beanspruchtem Gebirge wegen der Engraumigkeit der Strukturen die Vorhersage tektonischer Storungs- zonen auch mit Hilfe einer geologischen Spezialkartierung sehr schwierig. Auch enggesetzte Bohrungen und eine detaillierte stratigraphische Bearbeitung der Bohrkerne reichen oft nicht aus, da die Bohrergebnisse nur selten eine Aussage uber Richtung und RaumsteIlung der Grossklufte und Storungszonen erlauben. Bei tektonischen Horizontalverschiebungen ohne nennenswerten Vertikalver- satz versagen die konventionellen Methoden fast ganz. In solchen Fallen ist eine luftbildgeologische Spezialuntersuchung derzeit die einzige Moglichkeit, den tektonischen Bau des Gebirges einigermassen zu erfassen.

First of all I want to make clear that what I am going toset forth does ab- solutely not pretend tobe a strictly technical treatment of the topic. It is neither an accurate analysis of the relationships of neotectonics with technical geology, nor with rock or soil mechanics. I simply intend to introduce a problern whose importance, even in the applied field, cannot be neglected for two main reasons. First, when adequately known, it allows the interpretation and explanation of processes less than clear; second, it may help to prevent some types of damages and land misuse. Introduction Since a few years the press of popular science, even when not specialized, has published several eye-catching pictures of roads whose course has been brusquely interrupted, of displaced tree rows, of truncated water courses, of collapsed coast stretches, and so on, cspecially on the occasion of major seismic events (California, Alaska, Japan, Crnagora, Friuli, ...). The latter are among the most visible signs of the occurrence, or of the con- sequencc, of active movcments at the earth's surface. Such movements are related to faults which either are still nowadays or actually are originating today.

Hier Abhilfe zu versuchen, ist der Grund der Veranstaltungen der Osterreichischen Gesellschaft flir Geomechanik. Zum XXVI. Kolloquium vereinigten sich nun Fachleute, urn liber das AusmaiS und die Verwertung von Erkundungen im Geliinde und vor Ort, liber die Ausflihrung und Wirkung von Verankerungen - jeweils unter Berlicksichtigung der Wechselwirkung zwischen AusbaumaiSnahmen und Gebirge -, urn Probleme der moglichen Prognose, der unmittelbaren An- passung des Bauvorganges an die Gebirgsverhiiltnisse sowie Fragen der Kostenschiitzung im Tunnel- und Bergbau zu diskutieren. Die Zeit flir die Diskussionen, die sich an die einzelnen Vortragsgrup- pen anschlossen, war knapp; die Diskussionen mlissen daher weitergeflihrt werden. Deshalb darf auch in diesem Rahmen darauf hinge wiesen werden, daiS beim XXVII. Kolloquium im Herbst 1978 vor all em Fortschritte in der theoretischen Behandlung und praktischen Anwendung der Neuen Oster- reichischen Tunnelbauweise, baugeologische Auswertungen von Erkun- dungsstollen und Stabilitiitsprobleme hoher Felsboschungen behandelt wer- den sollen. Das XXVI. Kolloquium ist ein Steinchen in der Entwicklung der Fels- mechanik. Die Bewegung dieses Steinchens ist bereits eine Folge jenes zu- niichst unscheinbaren Steinchens, das seinerzeit die idealistischen Kriifte Prof.

Die folgenden Ausfiihrungen behandeln die Absehatzung der Seitendruek- ziffer A fiir den Orange-Fish-Tunnel in Siidafrika. 3 Der Tunnel solI eine Wassermenge von 50 m /see vom Verwoerd-Stausee des Orange-River in das Gebiet des grofSen Fish-River bringen, urn dieses zu bewassern. Die Gesamtlange des Tunnels betragt etwa 85 km, der Ausbruehsdureh- messer 6 m. Der Orange-Fish-Tunnel dureh6rtert eine im geologischen Sinne ruhige Landschaft. Er liegt im Karroo-Becken, welches von Sedimenten, vorwiegend Sandsteinen, Sehluffsteinen und Steinmergeln gefii11t ist. Die Ablagerungen sind dureh einen haufigen Weehsel dieser Gesteins- arten sowohl in horizontaler wie in vertikaler Erstreckung gekennzeiehnet und werden von Dolerit-Intrusionen durehadert. Der Tunnel wird von mehreren Orten zugleieh vorgetrieben. Yom Ein- lafSbauwerk aus, von sieben Zugangssehaehten und vom AuslafSbauwerk aus. Es war vorgesehen, den Tunnel mit einem rasehen Vortrieb aufzufahren. Ober weite Strecken (etwa 85 %) des Tunnels war eine geringfiigige, provi- sorische Sicherung durch Anker sowie eine endgiiltige Betonauskleidung von etwa 23 em Dicke vorgesehen (diese fiir die ganze Tunnellange). Beim Tunnelvortrieb sind jedoeh unerwartete Sehwierigkeiten aufgetre- ten, und auch in der betonierten endgiiltigen Auskleidung stellten sich Risse ein, die nicht erwartet worden waren. 2. Abschatzung der Seitendruckziffer aus der Geologischen Vorgeschichte Yom Kenntnisstand des Untertagebaues zum Zeitpunkt der Projektierung des Orange-Fish-Tunnel ausgehend ist zu sagen, dafS in etwa mit A-Werten im Bereich von 0,25 bis 1,2 zu rechnen war.

Der diesjahrigen Tagung des Salzburger Geomechanik-Kreises haben wir den Namen Ludwig-Foppl-Kolloquium gegeben; wir wollten damit diesen Pionier der Geomechanik und Mitbegrunder unserer Kolloquien aus Anlass seines 80. Geburtstages, den er am 27. Februar 1967 beging, in besonderer Weise ehren. Zu einer Zeit, da noch keineswegs abzusehen war, ob dem Gedanken einer in Gemeinschaft erarbeiteten Synthese zwischen Geologie, Geophysik, Ingenieur- und Bergbauwissenschaften Erfolg oder Misserfolg beschieden sein wurde, hat sich Ludwig F o P P I mit dem Gewicht seines Namens und mit der ihm eigenen Aktivitat zu unseren Geomechanik-Bestrebungen bekannt, und es ist unser Stolz, dass dieser Forscher bei seiner Jubilaumsvorlesung an der Technischen Hochschule in Munchen die Geomechanik selbst ein Hauptarbeitsgebiet seiner reifen Jahre genannt hat. Allein die unserem Kreise gewidmeten Beitrage sind fur die Entwicklung unserer jungen Wissenschaft grundlegend gewesen und haben richtungweisende Impulse gegeben, aus denen vieles weitere erwachsen konnte. Viele Teilnehmer dieses Kollo- quiums erinnern sich noch gerne der Vortrage uber spannungsoptische Versuche an geschichtetem Material (1955), den Ubergang von der Haftreibung zur Gleitreibung (1955), elastische Spannungszustande in Korpern mit ebenen Schnitten (Kluften) (1957), die Formanderungsarbeit als Kriterium fur die Standsicherheit von Stol- len (1957) und uber Storungen des Spannungszustandes in der Umgebung eines Druckstollens durch Spalten (1957); uber den Bodendruck unter einem belasteten Fundamentbalken (1958); die Sprengwirkung des Porenwassers beim Druckversuch (1958) und die Untersuchung der Standfestigkeit von Stollen nach der Methode der kleinen Schwingungen (1958); zusammen mit Sonntag uber Spannungen im Gebirge mit plattenformigem Aufbau (1957), uber angeheftete Stutzmauern mit

Beim Entwurf von Widerlagern fUr Talsperren ist es von Bedeutung, daB man sich tiber Art und GroBe der Beanspruchung des Gebirges in der Umgebung des Widerlagers einigermaBen im klaren ist. Das Auftreten von Zugspannungen z. B. bedeutet ja im allgemeinen, daB sich der Kluftkorperverband des Gebirges lockert und daB als weitere Folge der Druck des eindringenden Wassers wirksam wird. Durch die Wahl des Bauplatzes und eines geeigneten Winkels der Krafteinleitung sowie durch geeignete VersHirkungsmaBnahmen kann man die Verhaltnisse unter Umstanden giinstiger gestalten. Da im vorliegenden FaIle beabsichtigt ist, allgemein giiltige Unterlagen zur Gewinnung einer Ubersicht zu schaffen, kann man den Modellversuch zunamst nimt fur einen bestimmten Kluftkorperverband durchfuhren, sondeI'll muB mit isotropem Modellmaterial arbeiten. Von vornherein ist dabei jedoch klar, daB man die fUr das Kontinuum erhaltenen Spannungen nicht direkt auf das wirkliche Gebirge tiber tragen kann. Man bentitzt die am Modell gemessene Spannungsverteilung lediglich dazu, um die Reaktion des im praktischen FaIle vorliegenden Kluftkorperverbandes auf eine solche Beanspruchung zu beurteilen. II. Voriiberlegungen In jedem ebenen Schnitt durch ein Talsperrenwiderlager senkrecht zu dessen Auflagerlinie herrscht ein ebener Verformungszustand, der bekanntlich an einem ebenen Modell mit entsprechendem ebenen Spannungszustand studiert werden kann. In the Japanese American relocation camps of World War II, internees could, on any given day, be both clients and victims of their assigned War Relocation Authority lawyers. The morally ambiguous remit of these attorneys was wide and often contradictory, including overseeing the day-to-day administration of the camps, settling internal disputes between inmates, managing conflict between detainees and their government captors, and providing legal representation for prisoners outside of the camps. The lawyers, who largely identified as progressive New Deal liberals, found themselves unwillingly but inevitably complicit in the government's internment of American citizens. Diese Bauweise beruht im wesentlichen auf dem Konzept, das umliegende Gebirge zur Aufnahme der durch den Tunnel verursachten Krafteumlagerung mog- lichst optimal heranzuziehen oder es entsprechend zu ertiichtigen. Trotz der fiir diese Bauweise unabdingbaren In-situ-Messungen zur Kontrolle der Standsicherheit sind fiir Vorplanung, Ausschreibung und Bearbeitung des Entwurfs Berechnungsmodelle erforderlich, die die Tragfahigkeit voraussagen.
