Drawing on Hayes's previous work in Strategic Management for
Academic Libraries, this professional reference addresses the
unique circumstances and needs of public libraries and provides
thorough guidance on how to manage change successfully in the
community library environment. The volume provides a conceptual
framework for strategic management, identifies its major concerns
and relationships to the tactical and operational management of
public libraries, discusses the particular problems and needs of
community libraries, and details the assessment of the library's
strategic position. The final section of the book offers extensive
practical information for formulating and implementing strategic
management in the public library setting. Public libraries must
operate in a time of increasing change, both within the library
community and throughout the larger social and economic
environments in which the library must function. All community
libraries, regardless of size, must prepare for the strategic
changes that are occurring, such as the National Information
Infrastructure and the onrush of electronic information. Planning
for change is not enough. Change must be managed strategically,
through the library's recognition of its needs and objectives in
relationship to the shifting contexts in which it must operate.

This professional reference for academic librarians provides
detailed guidance for the strategic management of academic
libraries. While strategic planning is important, this volume
recognizes that even the best plans must confront the reality of
implementation of services and facilities within the library on a
daily basis. This book offers solutions to immediate operational
problems within the academic library and treats strategic planning
as but one component of overall strategic management. The first
part of the work overviews definitions and discusses the issues and
objectives central to strategic library management. The second part
contains chapters on the academic and external contexts within
which the library functions, and looks at the impact of those
contexts on the strategic management plan. The third part provides
detailed information on technical tools and procedures by which
strategic management can be accomplished.
Stress, Coping, and Depression is the latest volume based on the
Annual Stress and Coping Conference held at the University of
Miami. In this timely collection, leading researchers offer a
variety of new perspectives on depression. They review the social,
biological, and psychological processes that put adults and their
children at risk and discuss innovative treatments grounded in
empirical studies. Research findings are integrated across domains
to construct more effective models of etiology and intervention.
The contributors' thought-provoking ideas will provide inspiration
for the ongoing efforts addressing the problems associated with
this devastating disorder. Content highlights include: * novel
information processing approaches to depression; * an overview of
the neural pathways guiding moods; * empirical approaches for the
treatment of bipolar disorders; * integrated models of biological
and environmental influences on the transmission of depression to
children; and * new perspectives on the relationship between
personality and stress.
This book, first published in 1973, sets out to clear away many of
the confused ideas and misconceptions concerning the origins and
nature of fascism. The first section deals with the intellectual
origins of fascism and examines the constituent strands and
development of fascist theory, including discussion of such topics
as the myth of race, the idea of the elite and the leader,
nationalism, and the influence of militarism. The book then goes on
to look at fascism in action, particularly in relation to economic
affairs. The author here examines the process by which the fascists
came to power in Germany and Italy, investigating both the
political and social causes. A third section contains discussion of
the nature of more recent regimes in Greece, Latin America and
Africa.

A study of medieval attitudes towards the ventriloquism of God's
and Christ's voices through human media, which reveals a
progression from an orthodox view of divine vocal power to an
anxiety over the authority of the priest's voice to a subversive
take on the divine voice that foreshadows Protestant devotion.
"Divine Ventriloquism in Medieval English Literature "studies
medieval attitudes towards the human mediation of God's and
Christ's voices and thus attends to how medieval people resignified
a pagan practice. As Mary Hayes demonstrates, the ventriloquized
divine voice ultimately permits an exploration of human
relationships with God as well as mundane relationships between the
divine voice's designated clerical mediators and their lay
audiences. This book demonstrates that the ventriloquized divine
voice became a contested site of power as priests acquired more
institutional endorsement and, ironically, devotion in some ways
became putatively more lay-centered. Taken together, these chapters
tell a story, one of a progression from an orthodox view of divine
vocal power, to an anxiety over the authority of the priest's
voice, to a subversive take on the ability of lay people not only
to mimic the clerical voice but also to generate their own unique
performances capable of divine communication. ""
Rape culture, a colloquial term often used to describe society’s
normalization and cultural acceptance of sexual violence,
especially of men towards women, can be defined in a variety of
ways. Academic discussions surrounding this topic often lack the
theorization needed to elevate these conversations from their
specific contexts to a broader, more conscious cultural awareness.
Providing clearly defined, historical and cross-cultural
definitions of this well-used term, Defining Rape Culture addresses
current debates with a fresh international perspective that does
not limit itself to whiteness or the Global North. Examining the
culture around sexual violence through an intersectional feminist
lens, Rebecca M. Hayes interrogates the historical origins of
sexual violence that are steeped in colonization and white
supremacy, proving how the thread of rape culture has persisted
even among very different cultures. Tackling how legal and
institutional indifference to sexual misconduct has allowed it to
fester unpunished, chapters also reveal the role that social media
has played in exposing the shared trauma that rape culture
perpetuates. From #notallmen to #MeToo, Defining Rape Culture acts
as an in-depth primer on how these outdated attitudes continue to
persist, but also the role we can play in shifting this cultural
mindset and create lasting social change.
This volume offers the first comprehensive guide to how HIPs are
being implemented in online environments and how HIPs can be
adjusted to meet the needs of online learners. This
multi-disciplinary approach will assist faculty and administrators
to effectively implement HIPs in distance education courses and
online programs. With a chapter devoted to each of the eleven HIPs,
this collection offers guidance that takes into account the
differences between e-learners and traditional on-campus students.
A primary goal of High-Impact Practices Online is to share the ways
in which HIPs may need to be amended to meet the needs of online
learners. Through specific examples and practical suggestions in
each chapter, readers are introduced to concrete strategies for
transitioning HIPs to the online environment that can be utilized
across a range of disciplines and institution types. Each chapter
of High-Impact Practices Online also references the most recent and
relevant literature on each HIP so that readers are brought up to
date on what makes online HIPs successful. The book provides
guidance on how best to implement HIPs to increase retention and
completion for online learners.

As research continues to accumulate on the connections between
media and crime, #Crime explores the impact of social media on the
criminal legal system. It examines how media influences our
perceptions of crime, the perpetration of crime, and the
implementation of punishment, whilst emphasizing the significance
of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. It offers an
accessible and in-depth examination of media and in each chapter
there are case studies and examples from both legacy and new media,
including discussions from Twitter that are being used to raise
awareness of criminal legal issues. It also includes interviews
with international scholars and practitioners from Australia,
Belgium, and the United States to voice a range of global
perspectives. This book speaks broadly to those interested in
criminology, criminal justice, media and culture, sociology, and
gender studies.
