With respect to public issues, history matters. With the worldwide
interest for historical issues related with gender, religion, race,
nation, and identity, public history is becoming the strongest
branch of academic history. This volume brings together the
contributions from historians of education about their engagement
with public history, ranging from musealisation and alternative
ways of exhibiting to new ways of storytelling.
This book studies the economic impact of container traffic at
one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean: the Port of
Algeciras Bay (PAB). The authors analyse the global framework of
the containerisation business and the characteristics that
currently condition this process. Following is an explanation of
the physical characteristics of the PAB, and a description of the
situation as regards the physical and logistics infrastructure in
principal Mediterranean ports.
The aim of this book is to investigate comfort control inside
buildings, and how this can be achieved through low energy
consumption. It presents a comprehensive exploration of the design,
development and implementation of several advanced control systems
that maintain users' comfort (thermal and indoor air quality)
whilst minimizing energy consumption. The book includes a detailed
account of the latest cutting edge developments in this area, and
presents several control systems based on Model Predictive Control
approaches. Real-life examples are provided, and the book is
supplemented by illustrations, tables, all of which facilitate
understanding of the text.
Energy consumption in buildings (residential and
non-residential) represents almost the half of the total world
energy consumption, and they are also responsible for approximately
35% of CO2 emissions. For these reasons, the reduction of energy
consumption associated with the construction and use of buildings,
and the increase of energy efficiency in their climatic
refurbishment are frequently studied topics in academia and
industry. As the productivity of users is directly related to their
comfort, a middle ground needs to be found between comfort of users
and energy efficiency. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to
develop innovation and technology which can provide comfortable
environments with minimum energy consumption. This book is intended
for researchers interested in control engineering, energy and
bioclimatic buildings, and for mechanical and process control
engineers. It also accessible to postgraduate students embarking on
a career in this area, particularly those studying
architecture.
The identification of normal and breast cancer stem cells has
offered a new vision of this heterogeneous disease and new hopes
for its prognosis and treatment. This volume provides an overview
of recent developments in mammary stem cell research and discusses
the many varieties of approaches used by researchers to investigate
the properties and functions of mammary stem cells. The beginning
chapters provide readers with an introduction to mammary stem
cells, and the processes used to characterize stem cells and
isolate them via fluorescent activated cell sorting. The next few
chapters discuss DNA and mRNA sequencing, proteomic techniques to
help profile cells, lentiviral cell transduction for gene
expression, and in vivo lineage tracing. The final few chapters are
dedicated to following stem cells from their initial niche to the
new microenvironment at their metastasis site, and to studying
these cells using physical and mathematical approaches. Written in
the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format,
the chapters include the kind of detailed description and
implementation advice that is crucial for getting optimal results
in the laboratory. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Mammary Stem
Cells: Methods and Protocols aims to help members of the scientific
community explore the behavior of stem cells and how to work with
them in order to guide the design of new and complimentary
strategies to be applied in the clinic with the ultimate end goal
of fighting breast cancer.
Analysing US immigration and deportation policy over the last
twenty years, this book illustrates how US immigration reform can
be conceived as a psychological, legal, policy-driven tool which is
inexorably entwined with themes of American identity, national
belonging and white nativism. Focusing on Hispanic immigration and
American-born children of Mexican parentage, the author examines
how engrained, historical, individual and collective social
constructions and psychological processes, related to identity
formation can play an instrumental role in influencing political
and legal processes. It is argued that contemporary American
immigration policy reforms need to be conceptualized as a complex,
conscious and unconscious White Nativist psychological, legal,
defence mechanism related to identity preservation and
contestation. Whilst building on existing theoretical frameworks,
the author offers new empirical evidence on immigration processes
and policy within the United States as well as original research
involving the acculturation and identity development of children of
Mexican immigrant parentage. It brings together themes of race,
ethnicity and American national identity under a new integrated
sociopolitical and psychological framework examining macro and
micro implications of recent US immigration policy reform.
Subsequently this book will have broad appeal for academics,
professionals and students who have an interest in political
psychology, childhood studies, American immigration policy,
constructions of national identity, critical race and ethnic
studies, and the Mexican diaspora.
This novel, interdisciplinary text achieves an integration of
empirical data and theory with the aid of mathematical models and
statistical methods. The emphasis throughout is on spatial ecology
and evolution, especially on the interplay between environmental
heterogeneity and biological processes. The book provides a
coherent theme by interlinking the modelling approaches used for
different subfields of spatial ecology: movement ecology,
population ecology, community ecology, and genetics and
evolutionary ecology (each being represented by a separate
chapter). Each chapter starts by describing the concept of each
modelling approach in its biological context, goes on to present
the relevant mathematical models and statistical methods, and ends
with a discussion of the benefits and limitations of each approach.
The concepts and techniques discussed throughout the book are
illustrated throughout with the help of empirical examples. This is
an advanced text suitable for any biologist interested in the
integration of empirical data and theory in spatial
ecology/evolution through the use of quantitative/statistical
methods and mathematical models. The book will also be of relevance
and use as a textbook for graduate-level courses in spatial
ecology, ecological modelling, theoretical ecology, and statistical
ecology.
In a field like L2 vocabulary teaching and learning where interest
and research studies are burgeoning, this book offers a useful
collection of papers that contains new ways of investigating
vocabulary development, techniques for vocabulary teaching such as
the Focus on Form hypothesis, word associations, and the use of
concordance data. In addition, it tackles recent areas of analysis
such as the treatment of vocabulary in teaching materials-an area
of almost complete neglect in the literature. The book is divided
into three parts. Part one provides the overview and deals with the
development of a model for vocabulary teaching and learning. Part
two focuses on empirical studies on lexical processing in English
and Spanish. Part three centers on materials design for vocabulary
teaching and learning. The advances made in this book will
certainly be of interest to researchers, teachers, and graduate
students working on this very active field of inquiry.
English-medium instruction (EMI) has become a pervasive teaching
model in recent higher education. The implementation of EMI
programs requires changes in university teaching methods since most
lecturers need to adapt their contents and the way they teach them
to successfully work in foreign language environments. The rapid
proliferation of such programs has resulted in concern among
teaching staff, who have felt pushed towards teaching their subject
content through a non-native language with little or no previous
training. As a result, many recent studies have highlighted the
importance and urgency to train teaching staff in terms of language
proficiency and the appropriate teaching methods, techniques, and
strategies to be applied in EMI lessons. Teacher Training for
English-Medium Instruction in Higher Education is an academic
research publication that provides comprehensive research on
effective approaches and experiences in teacher training for EMI at
universities both in terms of language skills and teaching
methodologies and that analyzes the design and development of
comprehensive teacher training programs that successfully engage
these EMI programs. It has profound implications for the
development of the international profile of higher education
institutions as it provides information on how to train
highly-qualified lecturers to successfully teach students from
different nationalities. Featuring a wide range of topics such as
assessment, curriculum design, and learning styles, this book is
ideal for pre- and in-service teachers, language specialists,
content specialists, administrators, deans, higher education
faculty, researchers, practitioners, curriculum designers,
policymakers, academicians, and students.
A New Concept for Tuning Design Weights in Survey Sampling:
Jackknifing in Theory and Practice introduces the new concept of
tuning design weights in survey sampling by presenting three
concepts: calibration, jackknifing, and imputing where needed. This
new methodology allows survey statisticians to develop statistical
software for analyzing data in a more precisely and friendly way
than with existing techniques.

The growth of peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation has been remarkable.
However, the rapid expansion of the phenomenon has yielded several
concerns over its potentially negative economic, social and
environmental impacts. These impacts are highlighted in policy
agendas as an emerging problem encountered by many local
communities in destinations experiencing a boom in P2P
accommodation. Specifically, concerns have been raised over the
impact of the growth of P2P accommodation on local housing markets,
residents' well-being and the environment as a result of the
touristification of residential areas. In fact, many observers
accuse P2P accommodation of fuelling the 'overtourism' problem that
several destinations face. This edited book addresses the need to
examine the P2P accommodation phenomenon from a community
resilience lens. In particular, through a collection of chapters
presenting a range of empirical and conceptual perspectives from
urban and rural communities, the book considers the implications of
P2P accommodation growth on the resilience of local communities and
the sustainable development of places. This book highlights: * The
rapid growth of P2P accommodation yields economic, social and
environmental negative impacts on destinations. * The P2P
accommodation sector is evolving towards professionalization which,
in turns, creates further implications for local community
resilience. * This book draws attention towards the need to examine
the nexus between P2P accommodation, sustainability and local
community resilience. * The collection of chapters presents
empirical and conceptual perspectives from urban and rural
communities. * Chapters impart significant insights to
policymakers, practitioners and academics in light of the COVID-19
pandemic.
The two parts of the present volume contain extended conference
abstracts corresponding to selected talks given by participants at
the "Conference on Geometric Analysis" (thirteen abstracts) and at
the "Conference on Type Theory, Homotopy Theory and Univalent
Foundations" (seven abstracts), both held at the Centre de Recerca
Matematica (CRM) in Barcelona from July 1st to 5th, 2013, and from
September 23th to 27th, 2013, respectively. Most of them are brief
articles, containing preliminary presentations of new results not
yet published in regular research journals. The articles are the
result of a direct collaboration between active researchers in the
area after working in a dynamic and productive atmosphere. The
first part is about Geometric Analysis and Conformal Geometry; this
modern field lies at the intersection of many branches of
mathematics (Riemannian, Conformal, Complex or Algebraic Geometry,
Calculus of Variations, PDE's, etc) and relates directly to the
physical world, since many natural phenomena posses an intrinsic
geometric content. The second part is about Type Theory, Homotopy
Theory and Univalent Foundations. The book is intended for
established researchers, as well as for PhD and postdoctoral
students who want to learn more about the latest advances in these
highly active areas of research.
Nowadays, the relevance of Corporate Social Responsibility in
private firms is undeniable as well as it is increasingly important
for public organizations. Although the idea that firms had some
responsibilities to society beyond that of making profits has been
around for centuries, it was not until the end of the last century
that CSR became a reality in business and one of the determinant
factors that has been taken into account in decision-making. A good
diversity management strategy as well as the development of a
suitable accountability policy are decisive for being considered as
a socially responsible organization. Notwithstanding, it seems that
in some cultural environments it is no longer enough to be socially
responsible. Stakeholders demand transparency and to know more
about the CSR engagement of each organisation. In this sense,
companies should include CSR in their core strategy and go beyond
their commitment to CSR and to carry out a proper CSR communication
strategy. All these sustainable behaviours will have an impact on
companies reputations if they are recognised by their
stakeholders. This book aims to provide more evidence to the field
of knowledge through the study of this topic by considering the
points of view from diverse fields of knowledge and applying
different empirical methodologies.
