In a world where everyone is striving for what is not worth having, orphan Becky Sharp sets out to claw her way to the top of English society. Written by Gwyneth Hughes, this 7-episode Vanity Fair is a new adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s 19th century literary classic. Set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, Becky’s story of villainy, crime, merriment, lovemaking, jilting, laughing, cheating, fighting and dancing takes her all the way to the court of King George IV, via the Battle of Waterloo, breaking hearts and losing fortunes as she goes.
Dr Abdullah Abdurahman (1872–1940) was the first person of colour ever to be elected to political office in South Africa. He represented some of the poorest people in Cape Town on the City Council and then the Provincial Council. First winning a seat in 1904, he was to serve the city for 36 years. Beloved by the people of District Six, for whom he fought so hard, Dr Abdurahman is a forgotten giant of the fight for justice. The grandson of slaves, he trained as a doctor in Scotland, returning to the Cape with a Scottish wife. Nellie and he were powerful partners – and their daughter, Cissie Gool, was among the most important political figures of her generation. Dr Abdurahman led the African Political Organisation – the leading coloured party of this period. He was a friend and ally of key political figures of his time: Sol Plaatje, Walter Rubusana, Mahatma Gandhi and W.P. Schreiner. He was a leading advocate of black unity, working tirelessly to resist the onslaught of white racism. The doctor was among the most internationally admired South Africans of his generation, arguing his case on delegations to London and India. He led South African Indians to Delhi, confronted the Viceroy and made a memorable address to the Indian National Congress. At his death in 1940 Cape Town ground to a halt as the entire community paid their respects. Drawing on previously undiscovered material, this biography lifts Dr Abdurahman from the obscurity into which he has so unjustly sunk – explaining his life against the background of the difficult times in which he lived.

As we join the Doctor in this eighth season, we find his relationship with his wife Louisa back on a more even keel, although juggling their jobs with baby care is proving more challenging daily. Meanwhile Bert and Al Large face challenges of their own, with brewing whisky and running a B&B not quite turning out as they had hoped; Mrs Tishell suffers a terrible and unexpected setback in her life; and Penhale, already facing romantic challenges, faces a mini crime spree and decides to host a Police Open Day. Newcomers to the village include a new curate as well as Morwenna’s parents, Jack and Tara who worked as missionaries in Kenya; and the village sees the return of Beth, the American tourist and veterinarian Angela Sim. And swimming through the maelstrom of it all is Doctor Ellingham, suffering humanity’s foibles with little tolerance and suffering literally with a newly adopted dog, against his better judgment, underfoot

In the first season, David is informed that company downsizing means that the Slough office might have to close. In a moment of gauche managerial bravado he promises his staff that there will be no redundacies - a promise he might not be able to keep... In season 2, the office has been merged and new staff from the Swindon office arrive to feel the benefit of David's managerial skills.
Africa is forever on our TV screens, but the bad-news stories massively outweigh the good. Ever since the process of decolonisation began in the mid-1950s, and arguably before, the continent has appeared to be stuck in a process of irreversible decline. How did we get here? What, if anything, is to be done? Fully revised and updated and weaving together the key stories and characters of the last sixty years into a stunningly compelling and coherent narrative, Martin Meredith has produced the definitive history of how European ideas of how to organise 10 000 different ethnic groups has led to what British prime minister Tony Blair described as the ‘scar on the conscience of the world’. Authoritative, provocative, and consistently fascinating, this is the seminal book on one of the most important issues facing the West today
Perhaps the greatest rock documentary ever made, Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz captures what was advertised as legendary rock group The Band’s final farewell concert appearance. Joined on stage by more than a dozen special guests, including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Muddy Waters and Joni Mitchell, The Last Waltz started as a concert, but it became a celebration. Interspersed with candid discussions between director Scorsese and members of The Band, The Last Waltz has been called "the greatest rock concert movie ever made - and maybe the best rock movie, period", and The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present this iconic documentary on Blu-ray. And remember, "This film should be played loud! "
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in this entertaining holiday special. What if this wasn't the modern day? What if it was the late Victorian period? What if the world's most famous consulting detective and his best friend lived in a Baker Street of steam trains, hansom cabs, top hats and frock coats? Welcome to Sherlock 1895!
When Julia Martin visits the Greek islands of the Dodecanese, beauty and suffering seem inextricable. On the Sponge Islands follows her journey through Rhodes, Symi, Halki, Kalymnos and Patmos to trace the cultural and ecological legacy of sponge diving. Because of their wonderful porosity, sea sponges have always been perfect for a myriad of human uses, and men from the islands had been diving for them and trading them since antiquity. It was a rich harvest that came at the cost of many lives. And it couldn’t last. Everything, one might say, flowed through sponges. Until it didn’t. Martin’s lyrical, searching prose is rich in dialogue, extraordinary characters, and curious tales. This is a story of extinction and resilience, of loss and restoration. It reminds us that it may not be too late – not yet.
Building upon the success of best-sellers The Clean Coder and Clean Code, legendary software craftsman Robert C. "Uncle Bob" Martin shows how to bring greater professionalism and discipline to application architecture and design. As with his other books, Martin's Clean Architecture doesn't merely present multiple choices and options, and say "use your best judgment": it tells you what choices to make, and why those choices are critical to your success. Martin offers direct, no-nonsense answers to key architecture and design questions like: What are the best high level structures for different kinds of applications, including web, database, thick-client, console, and embedded apps? What are the core principles of software architecture? What is the role of the architect, and what is he/she really trying to achieve? What are the core principles of software design? How do designs and architectures go wrong, and what can you do about it? What are the disciplines and practices of professional architects and designers? Clean Architecture is essential reading for every software architect, systems analyst, system designer, and software manager -- and for any programmer who aspires to these roles or is impacted by their work.

Capitalism’s addiction to fossil fuels is heating our planet at a pace and scale never before experienced. Extreme weather patterns, rising sea levels and accelerating feedback loops are a commonplace feature of our lives. The number of environmental refugees is increasing and several island states and low-lying countries are becoming vulnerable. Corporate-induced climate change has set us on an ecocidal path of species extinction. Governments and their international platforms such as the Paris Climate Agreement deliver too little, too late. Most states, including South Africa, continue on their carbon-intensive energy paths, with devastating results. Political leaders across the world are failing to provide systemic solutions to the climate crisis. This is the context in which we must ask ourselves: how can people and class agency change this destructive course of history? The Climate Crisis investigates ecosocialist alternatives that are emerging. It presents the thinking of leading climate justice activists, campaigners and social movements advancing systemic alternatives and developing bottom-up, just transitions to sustain life. Through a combination of theoretical and empirical work, the authors collectively examine the challenges and opportunities inherent in the current moment. Most importantly, it explores ways to renew historical socialism with democratic, ecosocialist alternatives to meet current challenges in South Africa and the world.

It started as an assignment. Everyone in Caitlin's class wrote to an unknown student somewhere in a distant place. Martin was lucky to even receive a pen-pal letter. Twenty-one-year-old Zulaikha Patel started her activism at the age of 13, when she started a movement called Stop Racism at Pretoria High School for Girls, because the rules at her high school included that black girls had to straighten their natural curly hair. Her stance sparked a countrywide movement. This is her inspiring story, told in her own words, of how she became a voice for change at such an early age.
Longitudinal data consists of a series of repeated observations of the same subjects over an extended time frame, and is thus useful for measuring change. Such studies arise in a variety of fields, such as health sciences, genomic studies, experimental physics, sociology, sports and student enrollment in universities. Many challenges can arise in longitudinal studies. For example, in health studies, intra-subject correlation of responses must be accounted for, covariates can vary with time, and bias can arise due to patients dropping out of the study. This volume under development brings recent and classical works in the modeling and analysis of longitudinal data and their utility for improving society. |
