The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius remain an abiding source of
inspiration and wisdom for Christians in the modern day who wish to
be closer oriented to God and his Kingdom. Ignatius of Loyola was
initially a Spanish page in service of a knight, who later became a
knight himself. Ambitious and eager for fame and glory, Loyola was
gravely injured when a cannonball collided with his legs, leaving
his left leg multiple fractures. The surgery of the time was crude;
he would walk again, but with a permanent, pronounced limp. As he
lay convalescing, Loyola experienced a series of visions. Being as
the hospitals of the era were run by religious orders he spent
weeks bedridden, reading the many texts concerning Jesus Christ and
the saints. This experience buoyed and inspired Loyola to lead his
life in the same fashion as the heroic saints; living to spread the
holy word and undertake great pilgrimages.
An essential work that centres colonial and historical trauma in a
framework for healing, Decolonizing Therapy illuminates
that all therapy is—and always has been—inherently political.
To better understand the mental health oppression and institutional
violence that exists today, we must become familiar with the root
of disembodiment from our histories, homelands and healing
practices. Only then will readers see how colonial, historical and
intergenerational legacies have always played a role in the
treatment of mental health. This book is the emotional companion
and guide to decolonisation. It is an invitation for
Euro-centrically trained clinicians to acknowledge privileged and
oppressed parts while relearning what we thought we knew. Ignoring
collective global trauma makes delivering effective therapy
impossible; not knowing how to interrogate privilege (as a
therapist, client or both) makes healing elusive; and shying away
from understanding how we as professionals may be participating in
oppression is irresponsible.
This book is the first in a three-volume set that celebrates the
career and achievements of Cliff Goddard, a pioneer of the Natural
Semantic Metalanguage approach in linguistics. In addition, it
explores ethnopragmatics and conversational humour, with a further
focus on semantic analysis more broadly. Often considered the most
fully developed, comprehensive and practical approach to
cross-linguistic and cross-cultural semantics, Natural Semantic
Metalanguage is based on evidence that there is a small core of
basic, universal meanings (semantic primes) that can be expressed
in all languages. It has been used for linguistic and cultural
analysis in such diverse fields as semantics, cross-cultural
communication, language teaching, humour studies and applied
linguistics, and has reached far beyond the boundaries of
linguistics into ethnopsychology, anthropology, history, political
science, the medical humanities and ethics.
This book is the third in a three-volume set that celebrates the
career and achievements of Cliff Goddard, a pioneer of the Natural
Semantic Metalanguage approach in linguistics. This third volume
explores the potential of Minimal English, a recent offshoot of the
Natural Semantic Metalanguage, with special reference to its use in
Language Teaching and Intercultural Communication. Often considered
the most fully developed, comprehensive and practical approach to
cross-linguistic and cross-cultural semantics, Natural Semantic

Scottish Puritanism, 1590-1638, is a portrait of Protestantism in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. Puritanism produced a community of like-minded ministers and lay people, bound together in a similar experience of conversion and Christian pilgrimage. The book also addresses the relationship between this religion and the political revolution embodied in the National Covenant.
This book is the second in a three-volume set that celebrates the
career and achievements of Cliff Goddard, a pioneer of the Natural
Semantic Metalanguage approach in linguistics. It focuses on
meaning and culture, with sections on "Words as Carriers of
Cultural Meaning" and "Understanding Discourse in Cultural
Context". Often considered the most fully developed, comprehensive

semantics, Natural Semantic Metalanguage is based on evidence that

St. Ignatius of Loyola wrote the Spiritual Exercises between 1522
and 1524, and today, nearly five centuries later, Jesuits in
training are still required to study it and follow its precepts
during their first year in the novitiate. Not designed to be read
cover to cover in one sitting, this book is made up of daily
meditations meant to be closely examined in isolation over a period
of about four weeks, under the guidance of a spiritual director.
Though The Spiritual Exercises have traditionally been read
primarily by those training for the priesthood, in recent years
increasing numbers of lay people and non-Catholics are discovering
its joys and insights. This edition-edited by Father Elder Mullan
(1865-1925) and published in 1914-is essential for anyone
interested in strengthening his or her faith and relationship with
God. Spanish priest and spiritual philosopher SAINT IGNATIUS OF
LOYOLA (1491-1556) has been described by Pope Benedict XVI as "a
man of God," "a man of profound prayer," and "a faithful servant of
the Church." The principal founder of the Society of Jesus,
Ignatius was canonized in 1622. His writings include Letters and
Instructions of St. Ignatius Loyola 1 (1524-1547).
This book is an essential clinician's guide to understanding,
unpacking, treating, and healing individual, familial, and communal
wounds associated with parental incarceration. Readers gain
familiarity with integrative micro and macro healing techniques and
modalities that are currently being utilized as anti-racist,
anti-oppressive, and innovative practices. They also develop an
understanding of and deeper unpacking of their own biases within
the therapeutic relationship. The book offers an extensive
overview of clinical practice models such as trauma-focused
cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and relational and
attachment-based therapy for treating trauma symptoms associated
with children of incarcerated parents, their families, and their
surrounding communities. The author provides guidance on healing
complex trauma through phase-oriented, multimodal, and
skill-focused treatment approaches, with emphasis on strengthening
one's own narrative of power and pain while building community in
supportive spaces. Among the topics covered: Why Criminal Justice
Is Relevant to All Clinical Practitioners Impact of Secondary
Incarceration: Collateral Consequences for Children and Families
Psychosocial Stressors for Children of Incarcerated Parents:
Conspiracy of Silence and Ambiguous Loss Supervision and the
Therapeutic Alliance: Critical Consciousness and Anti-racist
Clinical Training and Undoing Clinical Partnership: Application of
Dismantling Anti-Blackness Through Anti-oppressive Practice and
Critical Consciousness An Integrative Approach to Clinical Social
Work Practice with Children of Incarcerated Parents enhances
therapeutic relationships for social workers, teaches innovative
clinical practices most effective for this population, and offers a
comprehensive discussion and understanding of the complex traumas
faced both historically and presently by children and families
impacted by the criminal justice system. Although designed to
inspire and train social workers, the guide has significantly
wide-ranging application for mental health and medical providers
and other clinicians interested in enhancing their work with
children and families impacted by the criminal justice system in
diverse clinical practice settings. Lay practitioners and
policymakers within government and not-for-profit settings also
will find the book of interest.
This book presents detailed case studies of the first commercial
internet digital currency systems developed between 1996 and 2004.
Transactions completed with the new technology circumvented all US
financial regulations, an opening that transnational criminals
exploited. Mullan explains how an entire industry of companies,
agents, and participants turned a blind eye to crimes being
committed in this unsupervised environment. He then tracks the
subsequent changes made to US regulations that now prevent such
unlicensed activity, illustrating the importance of supervising
products and industries that arise from new disruptive technology.
This book distills hundreds of hours of interviews with the
creators and operators of early digital currency businesses to
create detailed case studies of their practices.
The monograph written by John Mullane, Ba-Ngu Vo, Martin Adams and
Ba-Tuong Vo is devoted to the field of autonomous robot systems,
which have been receiving a great deal of attention by the research
community in the latest few years. The contents are focused on the
problem of representing the environment and its uncertainty in
terms of feature based maps. Random Finite Sets are adopted as the
fundamental tool to represent a map, and a general framework is
proposed for feature management, data association and state
estimation. The approaches are tested in a number of experiments on
both ground based and marine based facilities.
