The central theme of this book is the relationship between the
reflections about and the realization of a musical composition. In
his essay "Words about Music, or Analysis versus Performance,"
Nicholas Cook states that words and music can never be aligned
exactly with one another. He embarks on a quest for models of the
relationship between analytical conception and performance that are
more challenging than those in general currency. Peter Johnson's
essay, "Performance and the Listening Experience: Bach's 'Erbarme
dich'" shows that a performance is an element within the
intentionality of the work itself. He looks for scientific methods
capable of proving the artisticity of a performance. And the
composer Hans Zender, in his "A Road Map for Orpheus?," states that
a composer must be capable of questioning obvious basic principles
(such as equal temperament) and finding creative solutions.
In our increasingly competitive, uncertain, complex world
marketplace, multinational companies, unions, and governments must
rethink and adjust their human resource strategies and legislative
policies again and again. Cooke and the contributors to this wide
ranging volume provide case studies and original analyses of
present and coming human resource issues and problems. Offering a
balanced, objective understanding of what they are, they thus
succeed in giving HR executives and public policymakers a way to
devise more creative and workable coping strategies. Among the
book's major points: MNCs usually underestimate the influence that
differences in industrial relations systems, workplace cultures,
and local resistance to certain HR policies can all have on their
operations. Unions too often fail to develop effective
transnational and inter-union strategies to better serve their
memberships in other countries and cultures. And public policy
makers are torn between policies meant to respond to a need for
workplace efficiency, against other policies meant to promote
worker equity. The book addresses these and other issues hitherto
explored minimally or not at all and provides analytical, practical
insights that have long-term generalizability and applicability.
Unique in its depth of ideas representing a vast range of
expertise, the book is a compelling addition to the literature on
human resource management, and a necessary resource for executives
at all levals in all types of global organizations.
The contributors examine, first, the foreign direct investment
configuration strategies of multinationals, then the transnational
diffusion of human resource and labor relations strategies. Among
the topics they cover are, how MNCs choose to diffuse the policies
of the domestic parent company into their foreign subsidiaries, or
how they decide to adopt policies and practices that originate in
the host countries. They take up the issues of organized labor's
generally diminishing relative power in a rapidly changing global
workplace, then focus on transnational collective bargaining
strategies and sociopolitical action. Finally, by recognizing
recent multilateral agreements governing workplaces across borders,
the contributors are able to assess the European Union Directive on
transnational works councils and the labor aspects and agreements
of NAFTA.
How the love of truth led a young man from Franklin County,
Tennessee through twelve states, three provinces, and two spiritual
battles. Gaston Collins came from a time and place shaped by the
pioneer spirit of David Crockett and the Godly spirit of David
Lipscomb. The greatest influence on his life, though, was the Word
of God. He wanted to know it, to live it, and to share it with as
many as possible. Many old, family photographs are included in the
print editions and some are not of publishing quality. They are
included, however, in the belief that a low-resolution picture is
better than no picture. Most of the appendices are writings of E.
Gaston Collins, including a 24 page booklet published in 1924.
This book is an ethnographic study of a group of Western women
development workers living in Gilgit, northern Pakistan. It focuses
on their efforts to construct comfortable lives and identities
while temporarily working abroad in this Muslim community. It also
analyses the political consequences of their actions, addressing
the ways in which these women perpetuate and resist unequal global
power relations in their everyday lives. The author traces the
legacy of many of these relations from the colonial period into the
present, and provides ideas about how they can be changed to
realise a more just global social reality.

The notion of 'silence' in Politics and International Relations has
come to imply the absence of voice in political life and, as such,
tends to be scholastically prescribed as the antithesis of
political power and political agency. However, from Emma Gonzales's
three minutes of silence as part of her address at the March for
Our Lives, to Trump's attempts to silence the investigation into
his campaign's alleged collusion with Russia, along with the
continuing revelations articulated by silence-breakers of sexual
harassment, it is apparent that there are multiple meanings and
functions of political silence - all of which intersect at the
nexus of power and agency. Dingli and Cooke present a complex
constellation of engagements that challenge the conceptual
limitations of established approaches to silence by engaging with
diverse, cross-disciplinary analytical perspectives on silence and
its political implications in the realms of: environmental
politics, diplomacy, digital privacy, radical politics, the
politics of piety, commemoration, international organization and
international law, among others. Contributors to this edited
collection chart their approaches to the relationship between
silence, power and agency, thus positing silence as a productive
modality of agency. While this collection promotes intellectual and
interdisciplinary synergy around critical thinking and research
regarding the intersections of silence, power and agency, it is
written for scholars in politics, international relations theory,
international political theory, critical theory and everything in
between.
Handbook of Forensic Mental Health Services focuses on assessment,
treatment, and policy issues regarding juveniles and adults in the
criminal and civil systems. Uniquely, this volume is designed for
professionals who deliver mental health services, rather than
researchers. Just like its parent series, its goal revolves around
improving the quality of mental health care services in forensic
settings. It achieves this by integrating the findings related to
clinical practice, administration, and policy from trends and best
practice internationally that mental health professionals can
implement.
