The identity of the Beast rising out of the sea in Revelation 13
is a hotly debated topic. Some believe the Beast has come already,
while others believe that he is alive today, waiting to take his
position of power. One of the key passages cited by all groups is
in Revelation 13:1-8, 18.
Yet the imagery of the book of Revelation has opened it to
misinterpretation by modern-day interpreters who are unfamiliar
with the apocalyptic literary genre. Jonathan Leonard explains the
meaning of the Beast of Revelation 13:1-8, 18 in its first century
context and its relevance to members of the early church. The
imagery of the Beast of Revelation is not seen as instilling fear
into the hearts of believers concerning the future, but serves as a
stinging critique of imperial power, idolatry, and oppression. When
properly viewed in its original context, the unveiling of the Beast
can transcend the first century and serve to strengthen the
testimony of the church of Jesus Christ in the present day.
Trajectories of Mysticism in Theory and Literature is a collection
of essays which considers how recent critical theory contributes to
debates about mystical and negative theology. This collection draws
upon a wide range of material, including Biblical texts,
autobiographical, confessional and fictional writing from the
sixteenth century to the twentieth century, divinity in English,
German, Spanish and French traditions, as well as work on God and
metaphysics by Schelling, Weil, Levinas, Derrida, de Ma, Irigaray,
and Cixous.
Twenty years after the post-apartheid Government took office, this
timely text interrogates the extent to which the attitudes,
identities and everyday lives of British people have changed in
accordance with the 'new' South Africa. New ethnographic research
is drawn upon to explore important questions of mobility, locality
and identity.
This book considers how mysticism and negative theology can be reread in response to recent theological work on literature and culture. Essays consider the possibility that mystical and negative theologies challenge the conceptualization of identity and difference in Western theology, and some further argue that mysticism provides a radical trajectory away from the structures of knowledge and identity which prevail in Western culture.
Developments in the understanding of the biology and treatment of
Hodgkin's disease and non Hodgkin's lymphoma are moving at a rapid
pace. New technologies, such as gene expression profiling in
malignancy have been implemented using lymphoma to demonstrate
their clinical utility. The objective of this volume is to review
relevant aspects of the biology, diagnosis, and management with
particular emphasis on emerging data available for this disease.
During the past decade, life in post-socialist states has been fraught with instability and conflict. This book focuses on changing rural-urban relations - and growing divisions between them - in the context of the reforms. Contributions to this volume explore responses to capitalist-oriented policies and reasons for rural disenfranchisement. The work takes an ethnographic approach to exploring how 'global' processes engage with local, rural concerns in the post-socialist world.
This work examines the complex and contested intersection of
poststructuralist and postcolonial theories in work by key
theorists--Derrida, Deleuze and Guattari, Kristeva, Spivak, and
Bhabha--and assesses the sometimes difficult relationship that they
have with Marxism, feminism, and psychoanalysis. This book also
shows how these theorists often challenge each others' conclusions
about cultural power and don't, as some believe, collectively
celebrate "the postnational." Central to these debates are the
concepts of community, globalization, cosmopolitanism, Europe and
European colonialism, modernity, and postcoloniality.
by Bob Camp The business improvement topic and quality tool called
benchmarking is becoming widely understood and broadly applied.
There are now applica firms that tions in almost all segments of
the economy including industrial either produce a product or a
service, non-profit organizations such as healthcare, government
and education. The approach is starting to spread around the globe
with initiatives in Europe, Asia Pacific and South America. This is
commendable and reassuring and must show that there is significant
interest in the approach and that it works. What is missing,
however, are books and reference material that are not solely
prepared in the US where benchmarking started. Theses would include
examples of applications relevant to the local area and industries.
They would include references to articles written about
benchmarking appearing in local publications. In this fashion those
interested would have near hand case histories of the use of
benchmarking and therefore become encouraged to use the technique.
Zairi and Leonard have done the benchmarking community a real
service by documenting the European view and application of
benchmark ing to a wide range of examples. But they have not
stopped there. Their text includes treatment of a number of related
facets of benchmarking that makes this a fairly thorough text."
In recent years a dramatic increase in knowledge of the biology
of the lymphomas has been accompanied by the emergence of new
treatments offering improvements in efficacy and reduction in
toxicity. In this volume an internationally recognized group of
experts review relevant aspects of the biology, diagnosis and
management, with particular emphasis on the emerging data available
for this disease.

The authors of this book are busy practical men with no particular
barrow to push. The text of the book includes a comprehensive
review of all aspects of intraocular lens surgery including details
of the design, optics chem istry and sterilization of intraocular
lenses. Its value is enhanced by excellent illustrations and
extensive tabulated references to the litera ture. Accounts of
patient acceptability are balanced against candid discus sion of
complications and their management. The historical introduction
recalls that in the early stages of develop ment of the art, over a
period of 10 years, two dozen different lens designs were proposed,
most claiming elimination of problems which had arisen with their
predecessors. Eventually nearly all disappeared from the scene. In
an age where every cataract surgeon has to determine a personal
position on intraocular lens implantation the author's reflections
on these matters are timely. Intraocular lenses are neither a
miracle nor a menace, provided that personal decisions and
preferences are carefully thought through and put into practice
upon the basis of known facts and not upon the basis of fickle
fashion and fad. This book provides a background upon which the
reader can eva luate in his own mind the validity of information
provided by the manufacturers of various lens designs."

New Cosmopolitanism examines and interrogates recent work on
nationality in literal, critical and cultural theory. Focusing on
the work of Derrida, Deleuze and Guattari, Kristeva, Spivak, and
Bhabha, it explores how, for these theorists, the concepts of
community, the new International, nomadism, deterritorialization,
cosmopolitanism, hospitality, the native informant, hybridity and
postcolonial agency can provoke a different understanding of
national identity.

Ureteroceles: Contemporary Diagnosis and Management provides an
evidence-based review of current diagnosis and management options
for patients with ureteroceles. With the advent of antenatal
ultrasound screening, ureteroceles are presenting earlier, often in
asymptomatic patients, proving the need for active surveillance.
With no fixed protocols and guidelines currently in the field, this
important reference brings together recent techniques, such as in
utero puncture, endoscopic laser fenestration, and laparoscopic
clipping of the upper moiety ureter. Case studies illustrate
various diagnostic and management options. This important reference
provides all the necessary resources for ureterocele diagnosis and
management needed by urology researchers, pediatric urologists, and
general surgeons.
