Heroes don't always look the part. He was a tery, a lean, bearish creature with no name. The human soldiers left dead. Just another dumb animal on their extermination list. But he didn't die. Animals weren't the only beings on the list. Certain humans were marked for extinction as well. A fugitive band found him and brought him back from the brink. He became their pet, their mascot. And still he had no name. He was simply "the tery." He soon learned that these were no ordinary humans, and learned too that he was no ordinary tery. The humans had no idea that the creature they fed table scraps and patted on the head would soon turn their world upside down and change it forever. By then he had a name. THE TERY - A beauty-and-the-beast fable that only F. Paul Wilson could tell, full of wonder and horror, brimming with strange landscapes and hideous mutations from science run amok. An unforgettable tale of the extremes of the human spirit--of bravery and depravity, of innocence and evil. This edition features original illustrations by Stephen Fabian.

This volume covers the period starting from his childhood up to his early political activism, amateur journalism and initial scholarly contributions. His pre-Lausanne years are often neglected by students of Pareto, but form the intellectual and biographical background to his later contributions to economic, social and political theory.

Political Bias in Historical Writing (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): John-Paul Wilson Political Bias in Historical Writing (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
John-Paul Wilson
R976 Discovery Miles 9 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first step to writing a historical narrative is to understand the current state of knowledge of a given subject as it has been developed by other historians. From this understanding, one must then develop a methodology from which further research can be conducted to fill gaps and resolve inconsistencies within the existing body of knowledge. The present author began to develop a historical account of the 1979 Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua and its development in the following decade. In that study, it became clear that great discrepancies and inconsistencies existed in the record of historical analysis including many large contradictory conclusions. Many such discrepancies were resolved in the author's prior research but it became clear that a systematic approach to quantitatively analyze the source of these contradictions was needed. In the present research, the author has developed both a theoretical framework for understanding the source of these contradictions and quantitative methods of content analysis to examine the numerous analytical works written by North American authors about the Sandinistas throughout the 1980s. Using this framework and results of content analysis, linear studies along specific topic lines examine specific dynamic variables of Nicaraguan history in relation to the revolution, beginning a process toward the development of a more consistent history.

Shades of Sovereignty - Money and the Making of the State (Hardcover): Paul Wilson Shades of Sovereignty - Money and the Making of the State (Hardcover)
Paul Wilson
R2,723 Discovery Miles 27 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This comprehensive book traces the role of money in the creation of the state. Starting in the early modern era, Paul Wilson explores the monetary systems of empires and new states in the age of nation-building in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Spanning a wide geographical and historical range from the creation of the United States of America to the establishment of the European Union and the breakup of the Soviet Union and beyond, the author examines changing attitudes toward monetary sovereignty as dozens of new states created new currencies since the end of the Second World War. Wilson analyzes the decision-making of newly independent states in their choice of an appropriate currency, considering the complex factors involved-ranging from the purely economic to questions of security, international recognition, and outright nationalism that have played a part. The author challenges the notion that each country must necessarily have its own currency and explains why some newly independent countries have chosen to adopt the currency of another state. Citing the examples of international currency unions of the nineteenth century and the present day, he contends that sharing a currency does not represent a surrender of political sovereignty. Instead, Wilson argues for a more rational attitude toward money as a facilitator of transactions rather than as a symbol of national identity.

Toivo Tukongeni Paul Wilson Asheeke
R2,434 Discovery Miles 24 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since 1994, as the ruling party in South Africa, the ANC have become synonymous with and indivisible from the fight against apartheid rule. This has left little space for competing accounts, visions, and political projects to find their appropriate place in the historical narrative. In this innovative book, Toivo Asheeke moves beyond these well-trodden histories, to tell the previously neglected story of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM), a militant revolutionary nationalist wing of the anti-colonial struggle. Using archival sources from four countries and interviews with former veterans of the movement, Asheeke explores the BCM's engagement with guerrilla warfare, community feminism and Black Internationalism. Uncovering the personal and political histories of those who have previously received scant scholarly attention, Asheeke both illuminates the history of Africa's decolonization struggle and that of the wider Cold War.

This three volume series of intellectual biography considers the life, work and impact on economic, social and political theory of the Italian economist, sociologist and political scientist Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923). This second volume follows Pareto from his time teaching at Lausanne to the juncture in his life where he first began to make theoretical contributions of his own. Mornati considers Pareto's work on pure economics, general equilibrium, welfare economics and the economic case for socialism, as well as his critical observations of Italian and Swiss public policy.

"Something is murdering my men."
Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims.
When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore--who just happens to be Jewish--to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his way--a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny.
The battle has begun: On one side, the ultimate evil created by man, and on the other...the unthinkable, unstoppable, unknowing terror that man has inevitably awakened

Erasing Iraq - The Human Costs of Carnage (Paperback): Michael Otterman, Richard Hil, Paul Wilson Erasing Iraq - The Human Costs of Carnage (Paperback)
Michael Otterman, Richard Hil, Paul Wilson
R650 Discovery Miles 6 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For nearly two decades, the US and its allies have prosecuted war and aggression in Iraq. "Erasing Iraq "shows in unparalleled detail the devastating human cost.

Western governments and the mainstream media continue to ignore or play down the human costs of the war on Iraqi citizens This has allowed them to present their role as the benign guardians of Iraqi interests. The authors deconstruct this narrative by presenting a portrait of the total carnage in Iraq today as told by Iraqis and other witnesses who experienced it first hand.

Featuring in-depth interviews with Iraqi refugees in Syria, Jordan and from Western countries, ""Erasing Iraq ""is a comprehensive and moving account of the Iraqi people's tragedy.

Dynamicity in Emotion Concepts (Hardcover, New edition): Paul Wilson Dynamicity in Emotion Concepts (Hardcover, New edition)
Paul Wilson
R2,075 Discovery Miles 20 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Bringing together specialists from linguistics, psychology and philosophy, the book offers an exciting collection of papers assessing the conceptual representation of emotion and the conceptual relationship between emotion and language. The specific issues addressed include the analyses, based on corpus and cross-linguistic methodologies, of emotions such as pride, guilt, hope, despair, satisfaction, fear and anger in a number of languages, and how language shapes socialisation practices, such as in bilinguals. Finally, it provides good examples of the methods - from metaphor analysis to experimental studies - used to achieve a better understanding of the complexity and multi-dimensionality of the conceptualisation of emotion and the emotion-language relationship. Researchers and advanced students are likely to find this book an important reference work." (Vanda L. Zammuner, University of Padova, Italy)

Implementation Science (Paperback): Paul Wilson, Roman Kislov Implementation Science (Paperback)
Paul Wilson, Roman Kislov
R470 Discovery Miles 4 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Element introduces and critically reflects on the contribution of implementation science to healthcare improvement efforts. Grounded in several disciplines, implementation science is the study of strategies to promote the uptake of evidence-based interventions into healthcare practice and policy. The field's focus is threefold. First, it encompasses theory and empirical research focused on exploring, identifying, and understanding the systems, behaviours, and practices that influence successful implementation. Second, it examines the evaluation of strategies to address barriers or enablers to implementation in a given context. Last, it increasingly seeks to understand the process of implementation itself: what actually gets implemented, and when, why, and how? Despite the growing body of evidence, challenges remain. Many important messages remain buried in the literature, and their impact on implementation efforts in routine practice may be limited. The challenge is not just to get evidence into practice, but also to get implementation science into practice. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

A sucker is still born every minute. In this modern and interconnected world, con-men are lurking everywhere - it's never been easier for them to dupe us, take from us, and infiltrate our lives. One of the world's leading and celebrated experts on con-games takes the reader through the history of cons, how they've been updated to the modern age, how they work, how to spot them, and how to protect yourself from being the victim of one. R. Paul Wilson is a con-man who works for the other side - our side. He has spent a lifetime learning, performing, studying, and teaching about the ins and outs of the con world in order to open up our eyes to the dangers lurking about us - and to show us how not to get taken. Paul has never made a living as a con-man, profiting off of marks - he has used his expertise throughout his life to help people avoid cons. In this fascinating book, Paul takes the reader through the history and developments of the con game, what elements from the past are based on basic human psychology and have stood the test of time, what has been updated for the modern era and how it's getting used in the computer age, the structure of how these cons work, and - most importantly - how to recognize one, protect yourself and your loved ones, and avoid becoming just another sucker.

In a comic masterpiece following the misadventures of a simple but hugely ambitious waiter in pre-World War II Prague, who rises to wealth only to lose everything with the onset of Communism, Bohumil Hrabal takes us on a tremendously funny and satirical trip through 20th-century Czechoslovakia.
First published in 1971 in a typewritten edition, then finally printed in book form in 1989, "I Served the King of England" is "an extraordinary and subtly tragicomic novel" ("The New York Times"), telling the tale of Ditie, a hugely ambitious but simple waiter in a deluxe Prague hotel in the years before World War II. Ditie is called upon to serve not the King of England, but Haile Selassie. It is one of the great moments in his life. Eventually, he falls in love with a Nazi woman athlete as the Germans are invading Czechoslovakia. After the war, through the sale of valuable stamps confiscated from the Jews, he reaches the heights of his ambition, building a hotel. He becomes a millionaire, but with the institution of communism, he loses everything and is sent to inspect mountain roads. Living in dreary circumstances, Ditie comes to terms with the inevitability of his death, and with his place in history.
