Comparative Vandalism - Asger Jorn and the Artistic Attitude to Life (Paperback): Peter Shield Comparative Vandalism - Asger Jorn and the Artistic Attitude to Life (Paperback)
Peter Shield
R1,126 Discovery Miles 11 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1998, this volume is a study of Asger Jorn's attempt to formulate the 'first complete revision of the existing philosophical system' from the standpoint of the artist in the period 1961-67. The Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-73), painter, draughtsman, potter and sculptor, was one of the most prominent figures of his generation in Europe. His characteristic paintings were spontaneous, using energetic brushstrokes, splashing and spotting with a wide-ranging palette. Jorn's eclectic intellect absorbed an astonishing range of influences and involved him in many causes, including an ambitious programme to re-publish, with commentary, material vital to Scandinavian cultural history. He was also a founder member of Cobra (1948-51) and subsequently several other international groupings, which coalesced in 1957 in the setting-up of the Situationist International with French and Italian writers and artists. Fascinated by the philosophical debate on the position of the artist in contemporary life and the artist's relationship to the past, Jorn broke with the Situationist International in 1961 over the issue of whether an artist is an instigator of cultural change or only an instrument of political change. For the next four years, he committed himself to 'a first complete revision of the existing philosophical system' with the intention of placing the artist at the centre. Many of his ideas were first tried out in French in various Situationist publications and have since stirred considerable debate. His much more comprehensive texts in Danish of 1961-67 have never been made available in English. In Comparative Vandalism, Peter Shield offers the first detailed study of Jorn's revision of modern philosophy, exploring the origins and formulation of his ideas. The book includes colour and black and white reproductions chosen from his mature work to illustrate the connection between his writing and painting.

R1,762 Discovery Miles 17 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

International Satellite Broadcasting in South Asia focuses on the increase in the popularity of television in India beginning with the entrance of Hong Kong Based STAR-TV in 1991. This television system, which initially carried mostly Western programs, radically changed the nature of entertainment communications in countries where communications were generally state-controlled. These essays address the political, economic, and cultural significance and impact of transnational satellite networks in India, questioning the cultural effects of Western media programs on the recipient non-Western countries. They contain a survey of STAR-TV and the state-controlled Doordarshan as well as explore issues such as media and identity, pro-social entertainment television and culture as a market force.

The Natural Order and Other Texts (Hardcover, New edition): Asger Jorn, Peter Shield The Natural Order and Other Texts (Hardcover, New edition)
Asger Jorn, Peter Shield
R4,568 Discovery Miles 45 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In The Natural Order and Other Texts, Peter Shield presents the first English translations of the artist Asger Jorn's three philosophical texts - The Natural Order, Value and Economy and Luck and Chance. Offering a unique insight into an artist's attempt to make sense of a contemporary world which would accommodate his practice, these texts present an important contribution to aesthetics for modern art and an attempt at philosophical reconciliation of modern science and modern art. In 1961 Jorn resigned from the Situationist International and took the ideas of thinkers in many fields and amalgamated them into 'the first complete revision of the existing philosophical system' from the point of view of an artist. He developed a theory of artistic value and the place of the creative elite and adapted his previous ideas of extreme aesthetics to fit into this 'natural order'. Including a comprehensive introduction, Peter Shield's translations of Asger Jorn's classic texts offer invaluable new perspectives to readers crossing the boundaries of philosophy, art history and theory, and cultural studies. Peter Shield is an art historian, whose book Comparative Vandalism on these and other works by Jorn is also published by Ashgate.

After returning home from a trip to London with his best friend, Megan, Peter suddenly realizes that a random meeting with an attractive man in a hotel lobby is not so random after all. It seems that fate has drawn Peter and Aaron together. But the real question is whether fate will eventually pull them apart.

After Peter and Aaron begin dating, Peter starts to notice Aaron's unusual characteristics-he never seems to be hungry, his skin is cool to the touch, and he rarely drinks. As they immerse themselves in a passionate relationship, Peter attempts to brush off his concerns as he gets to know both Aaron and his brother, Braden. But everything changes when Aaron asks Peter and Megan to accompany him to Italy to work in the family business. A new life awaits Megan and Peter; unfortunately, neither has any idea that evil, danger, and peril loom in their future.

In a journey lined with love, loss, and revelations, Peter soon realizes that there are no coincidences in life-only a destiny that needs to be fulfilled.
