The aim and scope of this book primarily deals with conceptual
design of sea-going marine vessels. While there are a few books on
similar topics available to the reader, this book takes a different
approach to address the developments of many different types of
vessels. Of significant interest would be the estimation of
principal parameters of such as vessels and the various
coefficients required for design purposes. These parameters are
obviously not readily available without carrying out an extensive
search and background study. Hopefully, this textbook may be of
relevance to designers and career naval architects who need a
reference to initiate the design process.
This book is a study of India's political, diplomatic and security
challenges caused by the changing geopolitical and security
dynamics in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Like
many other countries, India has been deeply affected by the unrest
in the Arab world. As India has several long-term economic,
political and security stakes in the region, it has adopted extreme
caution in its responses towards the developments in the MENA
region since the beginning of the Arab unrest. This book examines
India's policy of non-intervention and opposition to military
intervention in the internal and regional affairs of the MENA
region. In response to the ongoing conflict, India has engaged with
several regional organisations and multilateral forums to work
together and find political solutions to the regional conflicts.
The book also examines new developments, such as the rise of the
Islamic State, and the new security challenges this has introduced.
Despite the regional turbulences, the momentum of India's
engagements with the countries of the region has been maintained
and India has been building mutually beneficial partnerships in
diverse fields. In this context, the book examines the response,
approach and the policies India has adopted to protect and promote
its interests during the last ten years of unrest. This book will
be of interest to researchers, students and policy makers in the
fields of international relations, India's foreign policy, Asian
studies, international studies, comparative studies and area
studies of the Middle East and South Asia.
This book examines the sustainability of supply chains in small and
medium sized enterprises (SMEs), in developed and emerging
economies. Drawing on contributions from experts in the field and
examining case studies from a range of countries, including
Thailand, Bangladesh, France, Spain, Austria and Greece, this book
provides researchers and industry practitioners with guidance on
how to make SMEs more sustainable through appropriate trade-offs
between economic, environmental and social aspects. Over the course
of the book, the authors examine the current state of sustainable
supply chain practices, highlight the key issues and challenges,
and identify critical success factors across different industries
and geographical locations. They also explore how supply chain
carbon footprints and effectiveness are measured, and navigate the
delicate balance between reducing the carbon footprint whilst still
ensuring enhanced productivity. Finally, the book reflects on how
the circular economy model might facilitate higher sustainability
of SMEs. Supply Chain Sustainability in Small and Medium Sized
Enterprises will be of great interest to scholars and practitioners
of supply chain management and sustainable business.
Today's businesses are driven by customer 'pull' and technological
'push'. To remain competitive in this dynamic business world,
engineering and construction organizations are constantly
innovating with new technology tools and techniques to improve
process performance in their projects. Their management challenge
is to save time, reduce cost and increase quality and operational
efficiency. Risk management has recently evolved as an effective
method of managing both projects and operations. Risk is inherent
in any project, as managers need to plan projects with minimal
knowledge and information, but its management helps managers to
become proactive rather than reactive. Hence, it not only increases
the chance of project achievement, but also helps ensure better
performance throughout its operations phase. Various qualitative
and quantitative tools are researched extensively by academics and
routinely deployed by practitioners for managing risk. These have
tremendous potential for wider applications. Yet the current
literature on both the theory and practice of risk management is
widely scattered. Most of the books emphasize risk management
theory but lack practical demonstrations and give little guidance
on the application of those theories. This book showcases a number
of effective applications of risk management tools and techniques
across product and service life in a way useful for practitioners,
graduate students and researchers. It also provides an in-depth
understanding of the principles of risk management in engineering
and construction.
This book initiates with the story of the evolution of firearms to
enable the reader to appreciate the sequence of the development of
firearms. It discusses different classes of small arms, their
mechanics, internal and external ballistics. Further, it covers the
design idea of barrels and actions, various operating principles
and relevant discussion on ammunition and propellants. The
principle of quality in the design of the small arms is also
elaborated in the desired degree. The book brings out the relevance
of modern manufacturing technologies like MIM and various surface
treatments, and polymers for enhancement of product quality. To
appreciate the sophistication of the architecture, the book
presents the anatomical details of a few small arms of reputes.
Provides complete understanding of overall small weapon systems
Explores mechanics and physics of small arms Discusses proper
design, quality control, and manufacturing process selections for a
good weapon Covers common type of weapon failures and catastrophic
failure Includes relevance of manufacturing processes The book is
aimed at professionals and graduate students in Mechanical Design,
Armament Design, Gun Design including personnel in the military,
paramilitary, police, and all other armed forces and their
maintenance crews.

Conference on Recent Developments in Sustainable Infrastructure
(ICRDSI-2020) and consists of themes pertaining to geotechnical
engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering
and water resources management.

Nanometre sized structures made of semiconductors, insulators, and
metals and grown by modern growth technologies or by chemical
synthesis exhibit novel electronic and optical phenomena due to the
confinement of electrons and photons. Strong interactions between
electrons and photons in narrow regions lead to inhibited
spontaneous emission, thresholdless laser operation, and
Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons in microcavities.
Generation of sub-wavelength radiation by surface
plasmon-polaritons at metal-semiconductor interfaces, creation of
photonic band gaps in dielectrics, and realization of nanometer
sized semiconductor or insulator structures with negative
permittivity and permeability, known as metamaterials, are further
examples in the area of Nanophotonics. The studies help develop
spasers and plasmonic nanolasers of subwavelength dimensions,
paving the way to use plasmonics in future data centres and
high-speed computers working at THz bandwidth with less than a few
fJ/bit dissipation. The present book is aimed at graduate students
and researchers providing them with an introductory textbook on
Semiconductor Nanophotonics. It gives an introduction to
electron-photon interactions in Quantum Wells, Wires, and Dots and
then discusses the processes in microcavities, photonic band gap
materials, metamaterials, and related applications. The phenomena
and device applications under strong light-matter interactions are
discussed, mostly by using classical and semi-classical theories.
Numerous examples and problems accompany each chapter.
Here an attempt has been made to discuss the application of
Queueing theory as applicable to hospital registration services
i.e. outpatient registrations, inpatient registrations and
registration for ICU admissions. Then illustrates the practical
application of queueing theory to a simple problem in manpower
planning: how large staff is required to give adequate service for
a central laboratory? The problem is simple enough to be amenable
to an analytic solution, and the optimal solution arrived at by the
use of queueing theory resulted in a considerable saving to the
central laboratory studied. A model of the patient care process,
based on queueing theory, is described and its parameters defined
empirically for application to an ICU unit. The model is
descriptive, with an output of expected waiting times for various
priorities of patient demand. The waiting times so estimated
constitute an index of the quality of nursing care and afford a
means of predicting changes in quality with changes in staffing or
inpatient load. The model facilitates investigation of the
relationships among three factors: patient condition, nurses'
activity priorities, and patient load per nurse.
Since the outbreak of the Arab unrest, sectarian politics has
become more pronounced throughout the West Asian region which is
reflected in the growing polarisation of society and politics on
narrow sectarian lines. Rulers have adopted sectarian approaches as
a measure to secure their regimes. Opposition forces have also
united themselves on the basis of their sectarian affiliations.
This book focuses on three countries - Bahrain, Yemen and Syria,
where protests have taken place during the Arab uprisings and who
have witnessed widespread violence and political instability. The
role of two major regional powers such as Iran and Saudi Arabia has
been extremely critical in all these three countries. Both Iran and
Saudi Arabia have used sectarianism as a foreign policy tool to
pursue their interests in the region. They have been found to be
involved in a 'proxy war' in these countries by the way of
supporting either the regime or the opposition forces. Similarly
the involvement of the two extra-regional powers, the US and
Russia, especially in Syria has proven to be crucial for the
security and geopolitics of the region. Sectarian faultlines has
been widening since the outbreak of the unrest and has affected the
political and security situation in West Asia.
Developed from the authors' classroom-tested material,
Semiconductor Laser Theory takes a semiclassical approach to
teaching the principles, structure, and applications of
semiconductor lasers. Designed for graduate students in physics,
electrical engineering, and materials science, the text covers many
recent developments, including diode lasers using quantum wells,
quantum dots, quantum cascade lasers, nitride lasers, group IV
lasers, and transistor lasers. The first half of the book presents
basic concepts, such as the semiconductor physics needed to
understand the operation of lasers, p-n junction theory, alloys,
heterostructures, quantum nanostructures, k.p theory, waveguides,
resonators, filters, and optical processes. The remainder of the
book describes various lasers, including double heterostructure,
quantum wire, quantum dot, quantum cascade, vertical-cavity
surface-emitting, single-mode and tunable, nitride, group IV, and
transistor lasers. This textbook equips students to understand the
latest progress in the research and development of semiconductor
lasers, from research into the benefits of quantum wire and quantum
dot lasers to the application of semiconductor lasers in
fiber-optic communications. Each chapter incorporates reading lists
and references for further study, numerous examples to illustrate
the theory, and problems for hands-on exploration.
