Fighting Words - The Politics of Hateful Speech (Hardcover, New): Laurence R. Marcus Fighting Words - The Politics of Hateful Speech (Hardcover, New)
Laurence R. Marcus
R3,243 Discovery Miles 32 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This intriguing book reflects on the conditions on college campuses that give rise to words and acts of hate, on the consequences of these episodes, and on strategies intended to improve intergroup harmony. Using the speech given by Nation of Islam spokesperson Khalid Abdul Muhammad at Kean College in 1993, the book begins with a consideration of the societal trends affecting today's college student, including the increasing economic uncertainty that characterizes their future and the hostility and fragmentation that characterizes their present. Attitudinal changes have proven to be widespread, as more Americans have begun to view the world through the lenses of political, social, and economic self-interest, calling prevailing equity policy into question and giving new life to identity politics. Since issues of affirmative action, multiculturalism, and political correctness are at the core of the national debate and command the attention of college students, each is addressed in detail. A discussion of what prompted Kean students to invite Muhammad follows a consideration of the current status of intergroup relations on campuses across the nation. This examination covers the inescapable conclusion that, despite the desires of most students for positive relations with people of other groups, there are serious gaps to be bridged.

The Politics of Institutional Failure in Madagascar's Third Republic (Hardcover): Richard R. Marcus The Politics of Institutional Failure in Madagascar's Third Republic (Hardcover)
Richard R. Marcus
R2,417 Discovery Miles 24 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Madagascar's constitution of August 19, 1992 brought hope to a population exhausted by economic failures associated with a failed experiment in scientific socialism and years of mismanagement. The repetition of transparent elections and the promulgation of "good governance" in the years that followed appeared to serve as an indicator of institutional strengthening and, by extension, progress. Unfortunately, a broader institutional analysis points toward a series of shocks to the political system by way of legal, but highly detrimental, juridical and constitutional shifts to the system. These shocks were meant to serve particularized political networks with long clientalistic roots and were made possible by the narrow vision of institutionalism that did not take careful stock of those networks or the leaders at the top of them. Little effort was made to look beyond a legislature brought in by careful elections but producing legislation serving individuals, the ways in which inchoate political parties distort institutional outcomes and the potential for institutionalization, the weakness of civil society to offer opportunities for popular engagement, or the use of donor-funded decentralization programs to build ministries that served as powerful and rapid proxies for leadership centralization. By the time the celebrated president, Marc Ravalomanana, was overthrown in March 2009 it became clear that there were few opportunities to seed political opposition and such limited space between individual leaders and primary institutions of public management that critical state functions immediately began to unravel. In this book the author considers the institutions of the Third Republic, how they formed, and why they looked like models for democratic change before turning to consider how the institutions themselves have been manipulated in plain sight by leaders looking to champion their own networks. He concludes that the rise of the Fourth Republic in 2010 did little to address these underlying concerns and argues that a new agenda is in order to consider not just the way in which institutions form, but the way in which networks of power, and leaders at the top of those networks, grow and change malleable institutions in young democracies with few avenues of accountability.

Psychosis and Near Psychosis - Ego Function, Symbol Structure, Treatment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Psychosis and Near Psychosis - Ego Function, Symbol Structure, Treatment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992)
Eric R. Marcus
R2,937 Discovery Miles 29 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Psychosis and Near Psychosis offers a psychoanalytically-based approach to an integrated treatment of psychosis and near psychosis, achieved by organizing psychotherapy, medication, hospital and milieu interventions into a powerful therapeutic tool. The author navigates confidently between psychiatric and psychoanalytic approaches, between biological evidence and psychological assessments. According to Dr. Eric Marcus, since the past, so-called heroic psychoanalyses with psychotic patients have clearly been shown to fail, the time is now ripe again to discuss psychosis in terms of the broadened psychoanalytic theory, with the support of medication and a better understanding of the neuropsychological factors involved. This book, which maps out mental illness in concrete and innovative ways, will interest all researchers and clinicians eager to find the best means, both practical and theoretical, to initiate satisfying psychiatric therapies.

Psychoanalytic Versions of the Human Condition - Philosophies of Life and Their Impact on Practice (Paperback, New): Paul R.... Psychoanalytic Versions of the Human Condition - Philosophies of Life and Their Impact on Practice (Paperback, New)
Paul R. Marcus, Alan Rosenberg
R1,044 Discovery Miles 10 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is psychoanalysis? Whereas there was once a time when proponents of "mainstream psychoanalysis" could point to the preeminence of Freud's drive theory and the version of the human condition associated with it-man as seeking pleasure in an erotically tinged universe-contemporary psychoanalysis is a fractured and contentious discipline in which competing theories share little more than the basic concepts of unconscious mental processes, repression, and transference.

Taking the complexities, ambiguities, and contradictions engendered by psychoanalysis over the past several decades as an encouraging point of departure rather than as evidence of the dissolution of the "psychoanalytic tradition," Psychoanalytic Versions of the Human Condition makes explicit how, within each major theory, a particular story about the nature of the world and what it means to be human decisively shapes how the clinician conceptualizes individual psychopathology and approaches treatment. A chorus of voices that both challenges and reaffirms the theory and practice of psychoanalysis, Psychoanalytic Versions of the Human Condition asks urgent questions-about the politics of psychoanalytic knowledge, and about how the profession is situated and operates in our contemporary culture. Whether Freudian, Jungian, Kleinian, Kohutian, Lacanian, or hybrid, the clinician will find this book a useful guide to understanding how each theory's "philosophy of life" infuses clinical work.

Otto S Margolis, Austin H. Kutscher, Eric R. Marcus, Howard C Raether, Vanderlyn R. Pine, …
R2,552 Discovery Miles 25 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines and describes aspects of acute grief that are peculiar to those who have lost an adult son or daughter. The essays in this volume express the view of scholars, clinicians, social workers, and individuals who have personally experienced the loss of an adult child. Each contributor describes his or her experiences within the scope of thanatology itself--a discipline whose focus is on the practice of supportive physical and emotional care for those whose lives are threatened, with an equal concern exhibited for the well-being of their family members. A philosopy of caregiving is proposed that reinforces alternative ways of enhancing the quality of life; introduces methods of intervention on behalf of the emotional status of all involved; and fosters a more mature understanding of the dying process and the problems of seperation, loss, bereavement, and grief.

The Principles and Practice of Narrative Medicine (Hardcover): Rita Charon, Sayantani DasGupta, Nellie Hermann, Craig Irvine,... The Principles and Practice of Narrative Medicine (Hardcover)
Rita Charon, Sayantani DasGupta, Nellie Hermann, Craig Irvine, Eric R. Marcus, …
R2,124 Discovery Miles 21 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Narrative medicine is a fresh discipline of health care that helps patients and health professionals to tell and listen to the complex and unique stories of illness. The Principles and Practice of Narrative Medicine expresses the collective experience and discoveries of the originators of the field. Arising at Columbia University in 2000 from roots in the humanities and patient-centered care, narrative medicine draws patients, doctors, nurses, therapists, and health activists together to re-imagine a health care based on trust and trustworthiness, humility, and mutual recognition. Over a decade of education and research has crystallized the goals and methods of narrative medicine, leading to increasingly powerful means to improve the care that patients receive. The methods described in this book harness creativity and insight to help the professionals in being with patients, not just to diagnose and treat them but to bear witness to what they undergo. Narrative medicine training in literary theory, philosophy, narrative ethics, and the creative arts increases clinicians' capacity to perceive the turmoil and suffering borne by patients and to help them to cohere or endure the chaos of illness. Narrative medicine has achieved an international reputation and reach. Many health care settings adopt methods of narrative medicine in teaching and practice. Through the Master of Science in Narrative Medicine graduate program and health professions school curricula at Columbia University, more and more clinicians and scholars have obtained the rigorous training necessary to practice and teach narrative medicine. This text is offered to all who seek the opportunity for disciplined training in narrative medicine. By clearly articulating our principles and practice, this book provides the standards of the field for those who want to join us in seeking authenticity, recognition, affiliation, and justice in a narrative health care.

On Trial - American History Through Court Proceedings and Hearings V 2 (Paperback): R. Marcus On Trial - American History Through Court Proceedings and Hearings V 2 (Paperback)
R. Marcus
R1,250 Discovery Miles 12 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The trials and hearings presented in the two volumes of On Trial capture much of American history in the intensity of courtroom confrontation and argument. Judicial proceedings have long fascinated both historians and the general public. Newspapers give extensive coverage both to trials that command national attention and to the many that appeal to local interest. Examining these trials and hearings makes possible not only an understanding of the larger issues surrounding them, but a deepened perception of the society in which each occurred. As Natalie Zemon Davis writes, "a remarkable dispute can sometimes uncover motivations and values that are lost in the welter of the everyday." On Trial is the first anthology based on edited transcripts of trials and hearing that is intended for use in American history survey classrooms.

The Jew in the American World - A Source Book (Paperback): Jacob R Marcus The Jew in the American World - A Source Book (Paperback)
Jacob R Marcus
R1,242 Discovery Miles 12 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Jew in the American World is a complete documentary history of the Jewish people in North America from the late sixteenth century to the present. A compilation of previously published archival sources chronicling the evolving domestic, religious, and political experiences of the Jews, this important volume provides the first complete single-volume reference source for American Jewish history. Once again, Jacob Rader Marcus has created a vivid and insightful portrait of the life and culture of Jews. He has compiled materials-the majority of which were written by Jews culled from diverse sources and ranging in subject from the establishment of the first Jewish day school in the mid-eighteenth century to the plight of Ethiopian Jews in 1991. Many articles highlight the role played by women in the community and the significant contributions made by various Jewish figures. The ideal companion to Marcus's United States Jewry, 1776-1985, The Jew in the American World is an invaluable work, essential for studying and understanding the American Jew.
