This book highlights a major advance in low-energy scattering
theory: the Multi-Channel Algebraic Scattering (MCAS) theory, which
represents an attempt to unify structure and reaction theory. It
solves the Lippmann-Schwinger equations for low-energy
nucleon-nucleus and alpha-nucleus scattering in momentum space,
allowing both the bound and scattering states in the compound
nucleus formed to be described. Results of various cases are
presented and discussed.
A manipulator, or 'robot', consists of a series of bodies (links)
connected by joints to form a spatial mechanism. Usually the links
are connected serially to form an open chain. The joints are either
revolute (rotary) or prismatic (telescopic), various combinations
of the two giving a wide va riety of possible configurations.
Motive power is provided by pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical
actuation of the joints. The robot arm is distinguished from other
active spatial mechanisms by its reprogrammability. Therefore, the
controller is integral to any de scription of the arm. In contrast
with many other controlled processes (e. g. batch reactors), it is
possible to model the dynamics of a ma nipulator very accurately.
Unfortunately, for practical arm designs, the resulting models are
complex and a considerable amount of research ef fort has gone into
improving their numerical efficiency with a view to real time
solution 32,41,51,61,77,87,91]. In recent years, improvements in
electric motor technology coupled with new designs, such as
direct-drive arms, have led to a rapid increase in the speed and
load-carrying capabilities of manipulators. However, this has meant
that the flexibility of the nominally rigid links has become
increasingly significant. Present generation manipulators are
limited to a load-carrying capacity of typically 5-10% of their own
weight by the requirement of rigidity. For example, the
Cincinatti-Milicron T3R3 robot weighs more than 1800 kg but has a
maximum payload capacity of 23 kg."
This volume focuses on the publisher's series as a cultural
formation - a material artifact and component of cultural
hierarchies. Contributors engage with archival research, cultural
theory, literary and bibliometric analysis (amongst a range of
other approaches) to contextualize the publisher's series in terms
of its cultural and economic work.
Plant resistance to pathogens is one of the most important
strategies of disease control. Knowledge of resistance mechanisms,
and of how to exploit them, has made a significant contribution to
agricultural productivity. However, the continuous evolution of new
variants of pathogen, ana additional control problems posed by new
crops and agricultural methods, creates a need for a corresponding
increase in our understanding of resistance and ability to utilize
it. The study of resistance mechanisms also has attractions from a
purely academic point of view. First there is the breadth of the
problem, which can be approached at the genetical, molecular,
cellular, whole plant or population lev ls. Often there is the
possibility of productive exchange of ideas between different
disciplines. Then there is the fact that despite recent advances,
many of the mechanisms involved have still to be fully elucidated.
Finally, and compared with workers in other areas of biology, the
student of resistance is twice blessed in having as his subject the
interaction of two or more organisms, with the intriguing problems
of recognition, specificity and co-evolution which this raises.
Spain Is (Still) Different addresses both theoretical perspectives
on the study of tourism in Spain and specific cases of the cultural
impact of travel and tourism on Spanish culture in the late
eighteenth to early twenty-first centuries. With contributions from
experts in leisure and culture studies, literature, film, and art
historians from Spain, the UK, and the U.S., this innovative
multi-disciplinary volume introduces readers to methodological and
practical issues concerning the cultural function of tourism in
Spain. The main body of contributions comes from the area of
cultural studies. In the introduction, Afinoguenova and
Marti-Olivella provide a comprehensive overview of the problematic
of tourism in Spain and of diverse approaches to the study of
tourism in its relation to Spanish culture. Unlike other
collections on tourism studies, this book is aimed to bridge the
gap between the social sciences and the humanities. It is
structured to provide an example of how experts in different fields
can use each other's work in order to achieve a multi-faceted
understanding of the phenomenon of tourism and its implications."

Plant-pathogen interactions is a rapidly developing area among the
plant sciences. Molecular genetics has provided the tools to
analyse and manipulate mechanisms of pathogenicity and resistance
responses and has facilitated their study from the population to
the molecular level. The book brings together the views of experts
in the field and provides an overview of the genetic basis of
interactions between fungi, bacteria, viruses and their host
plants, the triggering of plant defences and the complex array of
plant responses to stop pathogen invasion, as well as possible
applications for improved plant protection. The chapters are
organised and written to make an advanced textbook rather than
simply a collection of reviews or something resembling conference
proceedings. Thus, authors have largely concentrated on a didactic
approach and the book should remain useable for several years in
spite of the rapid progress in research. The text is aimed at
advanced students in the field of plant pathology as well as
researchers requiring an integrated picture of plant resistance to
pathogens.

THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS FIGHTING THE
OPIOID EPIDEMIC The opioid crisis has devastated families and
communities across the United States. Changes in policing and
medical practices have been swift, but they've achieved only a
modest impact on the fundamental causes of substance misuse and
addiction. The necessity for upstream intervention is clear. But
what does that look like? A Public Health Guide to Ending the
Opioid Epidemic does what only a public health approach can: offer
credible, scalable, and empirically supported approaches to
uprooting one of society's most pernicious challenges. It
systemizes the core tenets of the public health approach to
substance misuse and addiction, which alongside clinical approaches
(prescription guidelines and monitoring, increased access to
overdose-reversal medication, and medication-assisted treatment
availability) offers a roadmap for end-to-end response to this
diverse problem. Core elements of the public health approach, all
covered here in practical terms, include: * How to support
community-based, primary prevention of substance misuse and
addiction in different settings and populations * How to
effectively address the cultural, social, and environmental aspects
of health that are driving the current epidemic * How governmental
public health agencies play a significant role in responding to the
epidemic, both in the field's traditional model of disease
surveillance and control and in more directed approaches to health
promotion (building community resilience; addressing the impact of
adverse childhood events; mitigating the root causes of addiction)
These frameworks offer a foundation for understanding, analyzing,
and meaningfully impacting the burden of opioid misuse and
addiction in any population or setting. A Public Health Guide to
Ending the Opioid Epidemic is a roadmap for meaningful change.
In a society intrigued by what is out there, as reflected in Star
Trek's opening line, "To boldly go where no man has gone before
..." A shift in focus has occurred from what is "out there" to what
lies within us. In the early days of our knowledge of mental
illness, our discomfort with it was showcased by asking, "Who is
responsible for causing mental illness?" We accept the fact that
mental illness does exist, but what does living with a mental
illness, such as schizophrenia, look like from the inside facing
out? Living with Shadows steps into the world that someone with
mental illness inhabits every day to offer a no-holds-barred
portrait of living with schizophrenia. This memoir of author Eric
Fraser explores both the times when the disease wins-immersing him
in the realities of hallucination and delusion-to sweet moments of
victory, allowing him the clarity to live a full life with a family
and a career. No mask and gown is required to come on this journey
into the inner world of schizophrenia. Fraser valiantly struggles
to prove that he is not his disease and that it does not define
him. Living with Shadows considers how to live a full life with
this disease once and for all.
In The Inferno of Checkers, W. R. Fraser discusses how to play in
"Two-Move," "Three-Move" and "Go As You Please" checkers. The
former involve pre-arranged (but randomly assigned) moves for the
first two or three turns of the game, which is intended to keep
play fresh. Fraser colorfully utilizes the metaphor of Dante's
Inferno to describe the heavenly ease of free-play checkers, the
purgatory of Two-Move, and the hell of Three-Move checkers.

Terrorism was once a topic limited to certain sectors of the world,
such as the Middle East or South Africa. However, in recent years,
it appears that no one is safe in any part of the globe. A growing
number of countries must take measures to protect citizens and
visitors from the threat of terrorism. The Unites States of America
is the latest addition to this list. It has become evident in
recent years that terrorism is no longer a localized event, but
rather an increasing global problem. It has also become obvious
that terrorism requires a global solution as well. Evidence has
been mounting that terrorist groups are beginning to connect and
form alliances. This gives them greater strength and greater
resources. It seems they are finding common ground and are
beginning to coordinate efforts. This will be the topic of the
proposed research. The research contained in this dissertation
supports the formation of terrorist coalitions by examining
extensive information contained in United States Department of
State Annual Reports on Patterns of Global Terrorism. It examines
the recent trend towards former single terrorist organizations
forming alliances in order to conduct large-scale global acts of
terrorism. The findings of this report support the thesis that
terrorist groups indeed are cooperating for the purposes of a
common cause. The interconnectivity of financing and the sharing of
training grounds for these groups are examined in detail. Better
communications technology has played a significant role in the
formation of these groups and the abilities of these groups to
conduct coordinated acts of terrorism against multiple nations.
