First published in 1998, this book is the first comprehensive survey of the awards made to children's books in the English-speaking world. The Volume covers nearly forty different prizes including well-known and established ones such as the Newbury Award, prizes instigated by the commercial sector such as the Smarties Prize, as well as nationally sponsored awards and prizes for illustrators. Detailed lists are provided of the winning titles and, where appropriate, the runners-up in each year that the award has been given. Ruth Allen also presents some fascinating and often entertaining insights into the motivations behind awards and how they are views by authors, illustrators, publishers, librarians, booksellers and potential purchasers. The various criteria applied by judges of these awards are also examined, with an assessment of whether they have always achieved the 'right' result. This Volume is both a useful guide for adults wishing to buy good books for children and an important tool for those researching the history of the children's book industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shed fresh light on the ways that social media and digital technologies can be effectively harnessed to support relationship-based social work practice. However, it has also highlighted the complex risks, ethics and practical challenges that such technologies pose. This book helps practitioners and students navigate this complex terrain and explore and build upon its multiple opportunities. It uses real-life examples to examine how practitioners can assess the impact of new technologies on their professional conduct and use them in a way that enhance public confidence and relationship-based practice. The authors explore how digital technologies can support multiple areas of service including social work with children, families and adults, mental health social work, youth justice and working with online communities. They also consider regulatory questions and provide a roadmap for good practice.

This book will help social workers and practitioners to find achievable solutions to support autistic people - including those with complex needs - to live fulfilling lives in their communities. Far too many autistic people are currently in inappropriate institutional placements, putting their basic human rights at risk and experiencing a poor quality of life. Good quality support for autistic people is achievable, even in a social care system under pressure. This book will help practitioners to develop high quality community support to facilitate discharges and prevent admissions, by providing them with effective, practical strategies to communicate with and more effectively support autistic people right across the spectrum. Common assumptions and beliefs are challenged, including the idea that 'behaviours' are an inevitable part of autism, and practical approaches are offered to promote autonomy, respect for human rights and empathy with autistic perspectives as a basis for preventing distressed behaviour. This will enable practitioners to support and empower all autistic people to achieve a good quality of life in their communities.
This book is a brief, factual, historical walk through very interesting time in history. A walk through war and peace as well as sadness and happiness. The international walk of a fabulous female, occasionally in the spotlight-too often in the shadows, until now. A phenomenal singer; pianist, lyricist, composer; storyteller; glamourous entertainer, woman of the world, friend, and last, but certainly not least, my Mum (aka Ruth Allen). I am so proud of Mum and what she stands for. She has weathered every storm thrown her way and come out singing and swinging each time as she amazingly tackles a healthy 84 years young this year. I remain in awe of her beautiful smile and hopeful, youthful look, and outlook, throughout a life that's been anything but a walk in the park.
