The Civilisation of the Period of the Renaissance in Italy (Paperback): Jacob Burckhardt The Civilisation of the Period of the Renaissance in Italy (Paperback)
Jacob Burckhardt; Translated by S.G.C. Middlemore
R1,095 Discovery Miles 10 950 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

On several journeys to Italy in the mid-nineteenth century, the Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt (1818-97) saw in the figures and events of the Italian Renaissance certain traits that he believed to be mirrored in the politics of his own day, notably some aspects of 'an unbridled egoism, outraging every right, and killing every germ of a healthier culture'. Revolutionary in his all-encompassing and unflinching examination of the Italian Renaissance, Burckhardt saw developments in statecraft and war as giving rise to the more publicised artistic progress of the era. First published in 1860, this work is considered to be his magnum opus on the subject, and is here reissued in the accessible two-volume English translation of 1878 by S. G. C. Middlemore. In Volume 2, Burckhardt considers three key themes: scientific discoveries concerning the world and the cosmos, changes in society and festivals, and developments in the fields of morality and religion.

"The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy" is a classic interpretation of one of the most vibrant periods of human history, providing information and analysis for the scholar and a spell-binding introduction for the generalist. This single volume covers and uncovers the political, spiritual, artistic and social history of the Italian Renaissance. The work is divided into six parts: Part 1 - The State as a Work of Art; Part 2 - The Development of the Individual; Part 3 - The Revival of Antiquity; Part 4 - The Discovery of the World and of Man; Part 5 - Society and Festivals; Part 6 - Morality and Religion. Middlemore's translation does justice to Burckhardt's brilliant mind.

Jacob Burckhardt was a scholar who had the gift of being able to combine vast knowledge with a vivid imagination and lively creativity. This book, his contribution to cultural history, was first published in 1860, and has long been recognized as a great work of literature as well as history; its range, powerful style, and breadth of vision make it a classic introduction to the study of the Renaissance, and one that is still a source of inspiration. My starting point has to be a vision, ' Burckhardt wrote to a friend, otherwise I cannot do anything. Vision I call not only optical, but also spiritual realization; for instance, historical vision issuing from the old sources.
