The International Society ofSoil Science was organized in 1924 and
the 1st International Congress ofthe Society was held in
Washington, D. C. , United States ofAmerica, in 1927. The 14th
Congress was held August 12-18, 1990 in Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Akira
Tanaka, Society President, stated "It is a serious
concernofpeopleintheworldtosustainhighfarming productivityfor
feeding the ever growing population, and also to protect the
environment for human habitation. For this purpose, it is necessary
to maximize crop yield per unit field
areathroughintensivemanagementofthesoilandcropsonlands which are
best suited for crop production, and to leave lands which are
suboptimal for crops under natural conditions insofar as possible.
Soil science is respon- siblefor
planningtheoptimumland-usesystem,for managing soilsand crops with
maximum efficiency, and for fighting intelligently against soil
deteriora- tion. " Dr. Tanaka clearly stated the challenges facing
soil scientists, and they are indeed challenges. Even though the
rate ofworld population growth has decreased somewhat in recent
years, the consensus is that total population willdouble-to some
ten billion-beforeit stabilizes. The increased produc- tion of
food, fiber, and fuelwood necessary for the people will require a
continued supply ofnew technologies and management practices. The
consensus of many scientists is that the greatest challenge is not
increasing production, but preventing serious deterioration of the
soil and waterresource base so theproductionlevel can be sustained.

This slender volume describes the conflict between Pennsylvania and
Connecticut over the disputed lands of northern Pennsylvania and
early settlement in the area. Discussions range from early settlers
to the mid-1800s, and include: Puritans, Moravian missionaries,
detailed accounts of numerous conflicts with Indians, negotiations
and disputes between Connecticut and Pennsylvania over this
territory, Colonel John Butler, and much more. The author paints a
vivid picture of the area and the people who lived there. The
History of the Wyoming Valley epitomized in this little story is
one of the saddest and most dramatic ever acted. The place in which
it was acted is an amphitheatre fashioned by the hand of the
Almighty. The arena is a plain, the walls are the blue hills and in
the place of silken canopies, the fathomless sky. Several charming
illustrations by the author enhance the elegant narrative. A
full-name index has been added.
This is short satire by a fictional Conservative Christian writer
warning Patriotic Americans about a Cyber Attack on the Good Book
by the evil minions of the Liberal Socialist Media Cartel. The
fictitious author, S. R. Smith, has become convinced, upon his
first-ever reading of the Gospels, that freedom-hating activist
hackers have planted false passages in the Holy Bible which
directly link the teaching of Jesus to the Liberal Agenda. A
committed Conservative and self-proclaimed Christian, he is
incapable of believing that our Lord and Savior would have actually
said, for example, "render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's,"
because that admonition would undermine his zealous belief in lower
taxes and smaller government. The author sees that our Second
Amendment right to protect ourselves and our property with firearms
would be similarly threatened if Jesus had actually advised turning
the other cheek and literally giving the shirt off our backs to
Godless thieves. His only logical explanation then is that, under
cover of the kind of darkness only afforded to those practiced in
the dark art of electronic warfare, the Bible has been corrupted to
advance the abhorrent agenda of his sworn enemies - American
Liberals. In the book, Mr. Smith provides us with 13 Blasphemies -
statements attributed to Jesus Christ that he assures us were
actually inserted into the Holy Scriptures to advance the insidious
goals of those loathsome Liberals - 13 things which every good
Conservative knows that Jesus couldn't possibly have said.
