Asian Mobilities Consumption in a Changing Arctic (Hardcover): Young-Sook Lee Asian Mobilities Consumption in a Changing Arctic (Hardcover)
Young-Sook Lee
R4,480 Discovery Miles 44 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides an in-depth examination of the growing Asian tourism market and consumption in Arctic destinations. Through five parts, the book covers Asian mobilities consumption as an extension of Arctic international politics, the transportation sector and green cruise tourism, and ethnicity, culture, and history. It contributes to further understanding of the impacts of increased tourism in these polar regions by exploring climate change, debates around emerging economies and global power roles in the political, socio-economic, security and legal issues of the Arctic and Antarctic and associated polar strategies and policy. By drawing on a range of disciplines and with contributions from experts in Arctic destinations or who are associated with the Arctic, it further provides a holistic framing of emerging demand and mobility patterns of Asian tourists in a polar context. Asian Mobilities Consumption in a Changing Arctic will be valuable reading for students and academics across the fields of tourism, economics, sustainability, development studies as well as other social science disciplines.

Globalisation and the Politics of Forgetting (Paperback): Yong-Sook Lee, Brenda S.A. Yeoh Globalisation and the Politics of Forgetting (Paperback)
Yong-Sook Lee, Brenda S.A. Yeoh
R1,491 Discovery Miles 14 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In both academic scholarship and the popular imagination, the globality of modern society has been represented by global cities as the corporate and financial epicentres for capital accumulation, cosmopolitan cultures and innovative change. This has created an image of the globalised world as empty beyond cities which make it into the global league as paradigmatic 'celebrity' cities. As a counterpoint this book give interpretive weight elsewhere, in 'other' places, cities and regions, drawing on a range of examples from both the developed and developing worlds. This book was previously published as a special issue of the journal Urban Studies.

Second Tier Cities - Rapid Growth beyond the Metropolis (Paperback): Ann Markusen Second Tier Cities - Rapid Growth beyond the Metropolis (Paperback)

Over the past thirty years, transnational investment, trade, and government policies have encouraged the decentralization of national economies, disrupting traditional patterns of urban and regional growth. Many smaller cities -- such as Seattle, Washington; Campinas, Brazil; Oita, Japan; and Kumi, Korea -- have grown markedly faster than the largest metropolises. Dubbed here "second tier cities, " they are home to specialized industrial complexes that have taken root, provided significant job growth, and attracted mobile capital and labor.

The culmination of an ambitious five-year, fourteen-city research project conducted by an international team of economics and geographers, Second Tier Cities examines the potential of these new regions to balance uneven regional development, create good, stable jobs, and moderate hyper-urbanization. Comparing across national borders, the contributors describe four types of second tier cities: Marshallian industrial districts, hub-and-spoke cities, satellite platforms, and government-anchored complexes. They find that both industrial and regional policies have been important contributors to the rise of second tier cities, though the former often trump the latter. Lessons for local, national, and international policymakers are drawn. The authors are critical of devolution and argue that it must be accompanied by strong labor and environmental standards and mechanisms to overcome differential regional resource endowments.
