The third edition of Knitting Technology, widely recognised as the
definitive text on the subject, has been thoroughly revised and
updated to include all the latest developments. Beginning with the
fundamental principles and moving on to more advanced aspects, it
combines in a single comprehensive volume the basics of warp and
weft knitting, fabric structures and products, the different types
of machines, principles of production and terminology to provide an
invaluable reference for textiles students, textile engineers and
technicians involved in knitted garment design and manufacture.
Fundamental rules and principles are emphasised throughout. Aspects
covered include flat, circular, full fashioned, hosiery, raschel,
tricot and crochet production. Development of the various types of
knitting machines, their actions and mechanisms as well as the
construction, properties and end uses of the products which they
manufacture are also included.
The book is indexed and referenced in detail and includes numerous
labelled diagrams and photographs. Terminology is defined either
according to The Textile Institute's terms and definitions or
current usage in the industry and is supplemented where necessary
by American or continental terminology. Although SI units and the
tex yarn count system are explained and used in the text, other
systems have also been employed wherever it has been considered
that their usage is still important. A number of worked
calculations are included to clarify the examples given.
Knitting technology is the ideal textbook for a range of textile
courses from technician to degree level and The Textile Institute's
examinations as well as being an essential companion to all those
involved in the knitting industry.

Engineering Rock Mechanics Part II: Illustrative Worked Examples
can be used as an independent book or alternatively it complements
an earlier publication called Engineering Rock Mechanics: An
Introduction to the Principles by the same authors.
It contains illustrative worked examples of engineering rock
mechanics in action as the subject applies to civil, mining,
petroleum and environmental engineering. The book covers the
necessary understanding and the key techniques supporting the rock
engineering design of structural foundations, dams, rock slopes,
wellbores, tunnels, caverns, hydroelectric schemes and mines. There
is a question and worked answer presentation with the question and
answer sets collated into twenty chapters which match the subject
matter of the first book.
The aim of this volume is to open up reflection on the nature of
vulnerability, the responsibilities owed to the vulnerable, who
bears these responsibilities, and how they are best fulfilled. In
canvassing responses to these questions, the contributors engage
with a range of ethical traditions and with issues in contemporary
political philosophy and bioethics. Some essays in the volume
explore the connections between vulnerability, autonomy, dignity,
and justice. Other essays engage with a feminist ethics of care to
articulate the relationship between vulnerability, dependence, and
care. These theoretical approaches are complemented by detailed
examination of vulnerability in specific contexts, including
disability; responsibilities to children; intergenerational
justice; and care of the elderly. The essays thus address
fundamental questions concerning our moral duties to each other as
individuals and as citizens. Contributing significantly to the
development of an ethics of vulnerability, this volume opens up
promising avenues for future research in feminist philosophy, moral
and political philosophy, and bioethics.
Musical Intimacies and Indigenous Imaginaries explores several
styles performed in the vital aboriginal musical scene in the
western Canadian province of Manitoba, focusing on fiddling,
country music, Christian hymnody, and step dancing. In considering
these genres and the contexts in which they are performed, author
Byron Dueck outlines a compelling theory of musical publics,
examines the complex, overlapping social orientations of
contemporary musicians, and shows how music and dance play a
central role in a distinctive indigenous public culture.
Dueck considers a wide range of contemporary aboriginal
performances and venues--urban and rural, secular and sacred, large
and small. Such gatherings create opportunities for the expression
of distinctive modes of northern Algonquian sociability and for the
creative extension of indigenous publicness. In examining these
interstitial sites--at once places of intimate interaction and
spaces oriented to imagined audiences--this volume considers how
Manitoban aboriginal musicians engage with audiences both immediate
and unknown; how they negotiate the possibilities mass mediation
affords; and how, in doing so, they extend and elaborate indigenous
sociability.
Musical Intimacies brings theories of public culture from
anthropology and literary criticism into musicological and
ethnomusicological discussions while introducing productive new
ways of understanding North American indigenous engagement with
mass mediation. It is a unique work that will appeal to students
and scholars of popular music, musicology, music theory,
anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies. It will be necessary
reading for students of American ethnomusicology, First Nations and
Native American studies, and Canadian music studies.
Switched reluctance motors have steadily increased in commercial
importance since their introduction in the early 1980's, while
their technology - especially of their electronic control - has
made great progress. Their unique characteristics introduce a
delicate balance, in which the copper and iron are diminished in
quantity, complexity and cost, in favour of a greater reliance on
sophistication in the controller. Thus mastery of the control is
the key challenge in the application of these machines.
This book is intended for engineer's in industry and in the large
research community in electrical machines and drives. It introduces
the techniques for controlling switched reluctance machines,
starting from first principles and building up to the most advanced
forms of sensorless control. It covers the recent advances in
electronic control and includes aspects of motion control,
automation, acoustic noise reduction and energy efficiency.

Although Tijuana has historically been one of the primary crossing
points between Mexico and the United States for undocumented
migrants, representations of the city primarily focus on its
reputation for sex, drugs, and crime, excluding its significance in
the international migration dynamic. In Border Lives, Sergio Chavez
moves beyond Tijuana's infamous image to tell the story of a
diverse group of individuals who live in Tijuana and use both sides
of the border as a resource to construct their livelihoods. Based
on ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth interviews, Chavez explores
the complex and often contradictory ways in which the border shapes
the lives of border crossers. Due to the precarious nature of
access to the border, some were only able to use the border as a
resource in the past, while others continue to seek ways to access
the border in the future. Yet for all of these border
crossers-past, present, and future-the border itself plays a
significant role not only in their livelihood strategies, but also
their lifestyles. The border shapes respondents' knowledge and
relationships, controls their time, and allows them to convert U.S.
wages into a Mexican standard of living without losing the social
and cultural comforts of Tijuana as their home. Beyond mere
ethnography, this book provides empirical grounding to theories of
how the border shapes human action, offering a substantial
contribution to migration and labor theory.

Signal Processing for Active Control sets out the signal processing
and automatic control techniques that are used in the analysis and
implementation of active systems for the control of sound and
vibration. After reviewing the performance limitations introduced
by physical aspects of active control, Stephen Elliott presents the
calculation of the optimal performance and the implementation of
adaptive real time controllers for a wide variety of active control
systems.
Active sound and vibration control are technologically important
problems with many applications. 'Active control' means controlling
disturbance by superimposing a second disturbance on the original
source of disturbance. Put simply, initial noise + other
specially-generated noise or vibration = silence or controlled
noise].
This book presents a unified approach to techniques that are used
in the analysis and implementation of different control systems. It
includes practical examples at the end of each chapter to
illustrate the use of various approaches.
This book is intended for researchers, engineers, and students in
the field of acoustics, active control, signal processing, and
electrical engineering.

Grandpa Flex tells an interesting story about the first vertebrates, fish, how they moved out of the water and their progress to life and land. Scientist had naturally guessed what the earliest clumsy, ancient fishes must have looked like to be able to crawl out of the water and explore life on land. Fossils were even found to support the scientists’ assumptions – fossils of giant lobe-finned fish, which had fins that looked like primitive legs!

'Financial Performance' presents the foundation concepts underlying
the Senior Executive Programmes the Authors have taught together
and separately over the last 15 years in Europe, Asia and North
America.
These programmes include
The Oxford Advanced Management Programme
The Oxford Senior Executive Finance Programme
The INSEAD Advanced Management Programme
The IMI, Geneva, Advanced Management Programme
The Harvard Advanced Management Programme
The Oxford International Executive Programme, Singapore
The IMI International Finance Programme, Singapore
The book is intended as a reference manual as well as a textbook
and will be of value to anyone with an interest in financial
performance - particularly senior executives.
The developments in modern finance over the last two decades have
considerable implications for the way senior executives think about
the finance discipline. It is no longer enough to have a
rudimentary knowledge of basic finance and a heavy reliance on
financial specialists.
CEOs of course need excellent financial professionals - however
they need to go beyond this and provide strategic leadership. This
requires a conceptual framework for dealing with financial matters.
This book provides a description of the underlying ideas and will
be of value to anyone with an interest in financial performance -
particularly senior executives.
This book revolves around the concept of value and it is
organised into two parts.
Part IPerformance Measurement
Consists of three chapters, all of which focus on the real and
fairly complex set of financial statements of DaimlerChrysler
AG.
The first two chapters provide a detailed guided tour of the
financial statements which deconstruct the complexity and then
reconstruct the financials to provide a clearer base for analysis.
These chapters have been arranged to deal with each line item of
financial statements which have been highlighted in such a way to
allow the reader to treat the materials as a reference as well as a
sequential read.
Chapter three presents a framework for evaluating financial health
and introduces a cash flow based model for understanding the short
and medium term constraints on a firm's growth. This exposition
revolves around the concept of sustainable growth.
Part 2Valuation
In the second part of the book chapter 4 introduces the cost of
capital concept followed by chapter 5 which provides a general
source of reference for valuation and a variety of difference
applications.Chapter 6 concludes the book with a review of concept
of shareholder value from a European perspective.

It wasn't so long ago that the white working class occupied the
middle of British and American societies. But today members of the
same demographic, feeling silenced and ignored by mainstream
parties, have moved to the political margins. In the United States
and the United Kingdom, economic disenfranchisement, nativist
sentiments and fear of the unknown among this group have even
inspired the creation of new right-wing parties and resulted in a
remarkable level of support for fringe political candidates, most
notably Donald Trump. Answers to the question of how to rebuild
centrist coalitions in both the U.S. and U.K. have become
increasingly elusive. How did a group of people synonymous with
Middle Britain and Middle America drift to the ends of the
political spectrum? What drives their emerging radicalism? And what
could possibly lead a group with such enduring numerical power to,
in many instances, consider themselves a "minority" in the
countries they once defined? In The New Minority, Justin Gest
speaks to people living in once thriving working class
cities-Youngstown, Ohio and Dagenham, England-to arrive at a
nuanced understanding of their political attitudes and behaviors.
In this daring and compelling book, he makes the case that tension
between the vestiges of white working class power and its perceived
loss have produced the unique phenomenon of white working class
radicalization.
The recent outbreaks of E.coli and BSE have ensured that the issue
of meat safety has never had such a high profile. Meanwhile HACCP
has become the preferred tool for the management of microbiological
safety. Against a background of consumer and regulatory pressure,
the effective implementation of HACCP systems is critical. Written
by leading experts in the field, HACCP in the meat industry
provides an authoritative guide to making HACCP systems work
effectively.
This book examines the HACCP in the meat industry across the supply
chain, from rearing through to primary and secondary processing.
Our friend, the Flixies, learns how important the interaction between plants and animals is. They learn how plants, as they spread over the earth, also serve to keep the soil “stuck” to the earth with their roots. In flowering plants it is particularly the reproduction that developed quite cleverly and the Flixies are impressed with the ways in which plants distribute their seeds.
