The Ultimate Guide to Yin Yang - An Illustrated Exploration of the Chinese Concept of Opposites (Hardcover, 0th New edition):... The Ultimate Guide to Yin Yang - An Illustrated Exploration of the Chinese Concept of Opposites (Hardcover, 0th New edition)
Antony Cummins
R792 R687 Discovery Miles 6 870 Save R105 (13%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The concept of yin yang can be found in some of the oldest writing in the world. It is fundamental to Chinese thought and the route to understanding most Chinese practices, from Traditional Chinese Medicine to Daoism and feng shui. It also offers us ways of enhancing our own lives, establishing greater balance not only in our own environment but also in the wider world if we can work with other people to follow nature's flow. The central question of the book is "What is yin yang?" Step by step, with plenty of helpful illustrations and graphics, it explores the history and changing uses of yin yang - not forgetting the pronunciation and spelling (why yinyang is actually better than yin yang). The book also makes suggestions for working with yin yang, from observing the landscape to get a sense of the ebb and flow of energy through the world, to studying the patterns of nature in order to take what you need but not too much, to approaching sex as a cosmic ritual. After reading this book, readers will understand how to position themselves so that yin yang fills their lives with abundance - how to be in the right place at the right time.

Complementary medicine has become so popular over the past few years that in the UK alone there are now more alternative practitioners than GP's. Extensively rewritten, expanded, and updated, to take account of this dramatic increase, this new edition is an authoritative and complete guide to alternative medicine in the UK and internationally. The result of extensive research, this handbook examines the developing social position of aternative medicine, including legal, political, scientific, educational, and demographic aspects, and considers why people choose complimentary therapies, how many do so, and what happens during and after their treatment. The Practice of Tui Na - Principles, Diagnostics and Working with the Sinew Channels (Paperback): Robert Aspell The Practice of Tui Na - Principles, Diagnostics and Working with the Sinew Channels (Paperback)
Robert Aspell
R1,520 R1,209 Discovery Miles 12 090 Save R311 (20%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Tui Na is one of the 'Four Pillars' of Chinese medicine (alongside Acupuncture, herbal medicine and Qi Gong) and is a form of bodywork that includes acupressure, massage techniques, assisted stretching, and joint mobilisations or adjustments that are all based on the key medical principles and diagnostics of the Classics of Chinese medicine. This book is an accessible clinical handbook of Tui Na principles and practice. Tui Na can be used as much more than a musculoskeletal therapy, but in order to use it to its full potential as a medical intervention, it is essential to understand its uses on the Sinew channel system as opposed to the other channel systems commonly used within acupuncture. Tui Na requires an understanding of the principles and pathways of the Sinew channels as a standalone system of the body, as well as its relationship to the other channel and organ systems, and this book provides an accessible introduction to these channels before moving onto Tui Na practice. There are Sections on Diagnosis and Assessment, Techniques and Treatments with hand and joint manipulation techniques covered in detail, along with instruction on developing a Tui Na prescription and protocols for the treatment of common conditions. This book can be used by beginners studying on a hands-on practical course in Tui Na, in addition to qualified Chinese medicine and Tui Na practitioners.

Huang Di Nei Jing Ling Shu - The Ancient Classic on Needle Therapy (Hardcover, 2 Revised Edition): Paul U Unschuld Huang Di Nei Jing Ling Shu - The Ancient Classic on Needle Therapy (Hardcover, 2 Revised Edition)
Paul U Unschuld
R2,739 R2,476 Discovery Miles 24 760 Save R263 (10%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The Ling Shu, also known as the Ling Shu Jing, is part of a unique and seminal trilogy of ancient Chinese medicine, together with the Su Wen and Nan Jing. It constitutes the foundation of a two-thousand-year healing tradition that remains active to this day. Its therapeutic approach is based on a purely secular science of nature, with natural laws serving as guidelines for human behavior and medical treatment. No other text offers such broad insights into the thinking and manifest action of the authors of the time. Following an introduction, this volume contains the full original Chinese text of the Ling Shu, an English translation of all eighty-one chapters, and notes on difficult-to-grasp passages and possible changes in the text over time on the basis of Chinese primary and secondary literature of the past two thousand years and translator Paul Unschuld's own work. The Ling Shu reveals itself as a completely rational work, and, in many of its statements, a surprisingly modern one. It will provide the foundation for comparisons with the nearly contemporaneous Corpus Hippocraticum of ancient Europe and today's iterations of traditional Chinese Medicine as well.

Extraordinary Chinese Medicine - The Extraordinary Vessels, Extraordinary Organs, and the Art of Being Human (Paperback):... Extraordinary Chinese Medicine - The Extraordinary Vessels, Extraordinary Organs, and the Art of Being Human (Paperback)
Thomas Richardson; Foreword by William R. Morris
R797 Discovery Miles 7 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Exploring the relationship between the eight extraordinary vessels, and the zangfu and extraordinary organs, this ground-breaking book provides a new way of looking at the deep connection between the flow of qi through the primary channels, the placement of the confluent points of the extraordinary vessels along the primary channel system, and Daoist conceptions of the evolution of consciousness. He emphasizes the importance of the dai mai channel in integration. The author points to direct relationships between the primary channels, the extraordinary channels, and the zangfu and extraordinary organs which demonstrate a deep, underlying, and continuous connection between the individual and their environment, a continuous connection to Heaven above and Earth below, and, perhaps most importantly, an underlying drive of the channel systems to continually, experientially bring us back to the transcendent unity that we are always a part of, the natural state. This book will enlarge the perspective of Chinese medicine practitioners, and martial artists, and prompt new approaches to treatment.

A Record of the Assembled Immortals and Gathered Perfected of the Western Hills - Shi Jianwu's Daoist Classic on Internal Alchemy and the Cultivation of the Breath (Paperback)
Richard Bertschinger; Foreword by Zhongxian Wu
R772 Discovery Miles 7 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this Tang Classic text from the 9th Century, Daoist practitioner Shi Jianwu describes how through adapting our own breathing to the breath of the universe and daily meditation, one can develop an astral body and 'transcend earthly matters to walk in the divine'. Richard Bertschinger offers the first annotated English language translation of this text with practical guidance for Qigong, meditative practice and personal development. With elements of Daoist tradition and drawing on Mayahana Buddhist influences, this ancient guide aims to bring to the fore perceptions and focus on a natural form of breathing for pure meditation. Much of this Chinese practice has been misunderstood and lost over the years, until now. Richard's thoughtful translation and additional comments serve to distribute Shi Jianwu's original message with open interpretations for the individual reader.

The Living Needle - Modern Acupuncture Technique (Hardcover): Justin Phillips The Living Needle - Modern Acupuncture Technique (Hardcover)
Justin Phillips
R856 Discovery Miles 8 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This fully illustrated guide to modern acupuncture technique explores the foundational skills of the craft from a primarily energetic perspective, showing how perfecting these skills can have a profound effect on the practice of Chinese Medicine. The goal is for the clinician to be able to fully grasp what they are doing on the channels and the tissues with each of the classic manipulation techniques in a way that has hitherto been unexplored in technique textbooks, which tend to focus on the simple mechanics of technique. Organised around the structure of an actual patient encounter, the book begins with the basics of needle selection, moving through patient and practitioner position, to insertion, and then on to the various mechanical actions taken on an inserted needle, ending with the withdrawal of the needle. The skills discussed and described in this book can help expand any acupuncturist's practice through their application. Further advice and information is provided through supplementary online video demonstrations.

The Spirit of the Organs - Twelve stories for practitioners and patients (Paperback): John Hamwee The Spirit of the Organs - Twelve stories for practitioners and patients (Paperback)
John Hamwee
R546 Discovery Miles 5 460 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the Chinese medicine tradition, understanding and resonating with the spirit of the organs leads to better diagnosis and more effective, powerful treatment. Behind most symptoms lies a disturbance of spirit, and the more alert a practitioner to the nature of such a disturbance the more effective the treatment is likely to be. John Hamwee explores the spirit of each organ not in analytical, rational, summarising language but through life stories that express the nature and tendencies of the organ at a deep level. Through the stories of 12 people that embody the unique spirit of each organ, he shows the physical, emotional and spiritual nature of each, and their related tendencies and possibilities for improved wellbeing. Written to give Chinese medicine practitioners new ways to reflect on each organ in the most complete way, this book is also a lighthearted yet profound introduction to the heart of the Chinese medical tradition.

Richard Bertschinger
R787 Discovery Miles 7 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this selection of core texts, Richard Bertschinger presents a commentary and translation of the key writings for students and practitioners of Chinese medicine in the 21st century from the ancient, definitive set of books on Chinese medicine, the Huangdi Neijing or 'the Yellow Emperor's Medical Classic'. Bertschinger selects the key sections of the long and often impenetrable Huangdi Neijing that are vital for students and practitioners to know and understand for practice today, and provides an accessible view of these fundamental writings which remain central to all traditional approaches to medicine in China. Taking eminent Ming doctor and scholar Li Zhongzi's selection of texts as a basis, he also includes a number of additional texts from the Huangdi Neijing on topics such as the spirit in treatment, a resonance with nature, the art of needling, and the Five Elemental body and personality types, thus ensuring the relevance of this core set of information for students and practitioners of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine today.

Pricking the Vessels - Bloodletting Therapy in Chinese Medicine (Paperback): Heiner Fruehauf Pricking the Vessels - Bloodletting Therapy in Chinese Medicine (Paperback)
Heiner Fruehauf; Henry McCann
R915 Discovery Miles 9 150 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The first text on bloodletting therapy for Western practitioners of Chinese medicine, this authoritative text explores the theory and function of bloodletting, and provides detailed instruction on its clinical use. Bloodletting therapy, which works to remove internal and external disruptions to the system through the withdrawal of small quantities of blood, has numerous benefits, especially concerning the treatment of complex or chronic disease. Yet the technique is often met with alarm in the West and side-lined in favour of less controversial treatments such as fine-needle acupuncture, and moxibustion. This book provides a concise overview of its theory, historical and contemporary relevance, and clinical guidance. With detailed reference to the classic texts, the author clarifies the fundamental Chinese medical theory related to blood and the network vessels, and provides an in-depth discussion of the benefits of and practice guidelines for bloodletting. The book includes a chapter on the classical acupuncture techniques of Tung Ching Chang whose work is attracting increasing attention in the West. Through the exploration of classic texts and contemporary standards, the book provides everything needed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the technique and to encourage its use as a viable treatment option in the West. It will be an invaluable addition to the resources available for acupuncturists, as well as students and practitioners of Chinese medicine more generally, including those interested in all Chinese approaches to health.
