In order to ensure correct teaching in an era wherein many divergent perspectives were both common and tolerated, the Book of Homilies was a staple in English worship in both the interregnum and the reign of Elizabeth the First (Queen Mary suppressed Cromwell's version and issued one of her own, not included in the current volume). A second book of homilies book was issued in 1563. Both books are included in this historic volume, an essential asset in the library of any scholar of this period. Although some modern folk consider the type of the period difficult to read, it is easily readable with just a little effort, and gives the reader a sense of how these works appeared to those who actually used them. History becomes present to us, through more than just the word. Other facsimile editions have been prohibitively priced. The Apocryphile Press is pleased to present this affordable, essential volume as part of our Anglican Heritage Series.

The Golden Bough attempts to define the shared elements of religious belief. Its thesis is that old religions were fertility cults that revolved around the worship of, and periodic sacrifice of, a sacred king. Published in 1890 it offered a modernist approach to discussing religion. The impact of The Golden Bough on contemporary European literature was substantial.

Timeless truths from J. C. Ryle, first Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, the author of "Holiness."
The essays in this collection explore questions that are
fundamental to Anglican identity. What do we mean by doctrine and
its development? What does it mean to be Spirit led? What is
holiness, in Scripture and in the church's reading of Scripture?
How might we negotiate in a theologically coherent way the
relationship between the church's cultural context and its
inherited faith? These questions arise immediately from the debate
about same-sex blessings in the Anglican Church of Canada and in
particular the questions posed by the Primate at General Synod
2007. But the questions also stand on their own as deep-seated and
far-reaching inquiries involving who we are as people of faith in
this time and place.
In June 2008, 291 Anglican Bishops gathered in Jerusalem with
almost 900 other Anglican leaders, representing over 40 million
churchgoing Anglicans from around the Anglican Communion, for the
Global Anglican Future Conference. Central to the GAFCON gathering
were the daily expositions of Scripture, which were followed by
group discussion and prayer. We shared stories of our own Christian
journey, or pilgrimage, and recognized that the way of the cross is
at the heart of our discipleship, and also of our engagement with
the world. We now invite a wider circle of churches to join us in
these studies, particularly during the season of Lent, as we
consider them under the overall title of The Way of the Cross.

'Puritans', says J I Packer, 'saw themselves as God's pilgrims, travelling home, God's warriors, battling against the world, the flesh, and the devil, and God's servants, under orders to do all the good they could as they went along'. In this fi rst compilation of St. Antholin's Lectures we are brought face to face with those heroes of the past and are encouraged to apply their godly wisdom in our own day. * J.I.Packer: A Man For All Ministries: Richard Baxter 1615-1691 * Geoffrey Cox: The Rediscovery and Renewal of the Local Church: The Puritan Vision * Alister E McGrath: Evangelical Spirituality: Past Glories, Present Hopes, Future Possibilities * Gavin J McGrath: 'But We Preach Christ Crucified': The Cross of Christ in the pastoral theology of John Owen 1616-1683 * Peter Jensen: Using the Shield of Faith: Puritan Attitudes to Combat with Satan * J. I. Packer: An Anglican to Remember - William Perkins: Puritan Popularizer * Bruce Winter: Pilgrim's Progress and Contemporary Evangelical Piety * Peter Adam: A Church 'Halfly Reformed': The Puritan Dilemma * J.I.Packer: The Pilgrim's Principles: John Bunyan Revisited * Ashley Null: Conversion to Communion: Thomas Cranmer on a Favourite Puritan Theme The series is edited by Lee Gatiss, and opens with his introduction: To Satisfy the People's Hunger for the Word: St. Antholin's as the Prototype Puritan Lectureship.
Within The Greatest Christmas Gift you will find a collection of poems that will transport you back in time to the birth of Jesus Christ. In some of the poems, characters will help you see the blessed event as it unfolded through their own eyes. Elaine Richardson worked in customer service for a number of years. The Greatest Christmas Gift is her first book, but she hopes to publish more in the future. Elaine lives in beautiful San Diego, California where she grew up. She also lived in Ohio for a number of years where she raised her children.
What motivated the men who gave us our Bible in English? Much of the answer lies in the turbulent religious history of the era, but there are clues which can be found in the prefaces published with each new edition. This collection of the prefaces to the main translations of the Bible into English between 1525 and 1611 has been prepared to coincide with the four-hundredth anniversary of the fi rst edition of the Authorised or King James Version. An introductory chapter delineates the key events, and this is followed by each of the texts, with notes indicating the sources of the various quotations and allusions. This collection therefore provides the historical and theological ancestry of a much loved translation, and readers can hardly fail to be challenged by the spiritual concerns of the translators. Gerald Bray is Director of Research for the Latimer Trust. Prior to this appointment he taught church history and historical theology at Beeson Divinity School, Samford University from 1993, having previously served as lecturer in theology and philosophy at Oak Hill College in London.
In Colonial Virginia with its established church, every parish was required by law to provide its minister with a glebe, a farm or plantation, and a glebe house as part of his recompense. There were numerous glebe houses in Colonial Virginia and they were |
