Published early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and only five years after the death of the Roman Catholic Queen Mary I of England, Foxe's Book of Martyrs was an affirmation of the Protestant Reformation in England during a period of religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Because the English monarch was the temporal head of the Church of England, a change in ruler could change the legal status of religious practice. Adherents of the rejected faith risked persecution by the State, and during the reign of Mary I, non-Catholics were publicly burned at the stake. Foxe's account of these martyrdoms contributed significantly to a nationalistic repudiation of the Roman Catholic Church and asserted a historical justification intended to establish the Church of England as a continuation of the true Christian church rather than a modern innovation. The First Part covered early Christian martyrs, a brief history of the medieval church, including the Inquisitions, and a history of the Wycliffite or Lollard movement. The Second Part of the work dealt with the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI, during which the dispute with Rome led to separation of the English Church from papal authority, a new foundation for the Church of England, and the issuance of the Book of Common Prayer. The Third Part treated the reign of Queen Mary and the Marian Persecutions, in part instigated by Edmund Bonner, Bishop of London.

The essays in this collection explore questions that are fundamental to Anglican identity. What do we mean by doctrine and its development? What does it mean to be Spirit led? What is holiness, in Scripture and in the church's reading of Scripture? How might we negotiate in a theologically coherent way the relationship between the church's cultural context and its inherited faith? These questions arise immediately from the debate about same-sex blessings in the Anglican Church of Canada and in particular the questions posed by the Primate at General Synod 2007. But the questions also stand on their own as deep-seated and far-reaching inquiries involving who we are as people of faith in this time and place.
The contributors to this volume are all Anglicans and scholars who are deeply engaged in the life of the church and committed to its well being. While all very different, their essays are nevertheless linked by two intriguing common emphases: first of all on Scripture, and secondly on the consensus fidelium-the mind of the whole church through history and throughout the world. In this they witness to the possibility of an emerging common mind in the church of Canada: a way of seeing that is both catholic and evangelical-reading both the tradition and the times and, in both, reading Scripture. They represent what it might mean to be the church "in spirit and in truth" in our time. These essays are offered as an articulation of the guiding principles by which the church may move forward in a time of serious disagreement, and in the belief that this approach-at once catholic and evangelical, rooted in Scripture and in the community of the faithful-captures the peculiar genius of Anglicanism and, more broadly, something of what it means to be the Church.

The renowned Anglican biblical scholar Charlie Moule, as he was popularly known, came from an eminent church and missionary family. He obtained a first at Cambridge and trained for ordination at Ridley Hall where his grandfather was once Principal and where he himself became Vice-Principal at the age of 28. His Cambridge career culminated in his appointment as Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity, a post he held for 25 years, where he influenced a generation of Anglican leaders including Rowan Williams (at whose wedding he officiated), John Sentamu and the late Graham Stanton, his successor as Lady Margaret Professor. Charlie Moule died in 2007. There is widespread fear of a resurgence of ritualistic human sacrifice in many parts of Africa and this situation looks as though it will continue to cause fierce doubt among rational thinkers. It is argued that the ghosts of the 1930s have returned. The author seeks to establish whether there is any link between ritual murder and the historical, traditional religious beliefs that were abolished during the missionary period and are today argued by elderly respondents as being the source of the resurgence of ritual murder, related to suppressed beliefs and wider economic influences. This book will address the key issues relevant to this context systematically, such as the acceptability of corruption in cultural development, the impact of the deterioration in moral values and the problem of faking culture as an assumed means of success. The impact of changes in society will also be analysed and considered as a question that should guide national developments in the global influence of commercialisation and fear. The author examines how (European) missionary teaching abolished every existing African belief and value, which were the bonds that united people. As a result of annihilating these beliefs and values, communities descended into immorality, corruption and lack of communal responsibility.
