Gianluca Oricchio, Andrea Crovetto, Sergio Lugaresi, Stefano Fontana
R4,290 Discovery Miles 42 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores current financing options for small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), with particular insight into the European market. The authors position SME funding within a risk-averse lending environment with high regulatory costs on business loans, which has arisen from the recent financial crisis and new European bank capital regulations. Chapters in the book demonstrate how and why SMEs may be forced to leave the market and posit that shadow banking and other alternative funding options are viable channels for raising funds. A new and innovative SME credit risk model is also presented. This book will appeal to all who share an interest in sustainable solutions to issues in SME financing.

Giusy Chesini, Elisa Giaretta, Andrea Paltrinieri
R3,821 Discovery Miles 38 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book offers new insights on banking business models, risks and regulation proposals in the aftermath of the European financial crisis. It investigates the main issues affecting the business of banking nowadays, such as low interest rates and non-performing loans. The combined effect of low to negative interest rates and weak economic growth has encouraged banks to shift their business towards new areas less associated with interest rates, which financial markets and institutional investors are currently evaluating. Contributions also shed new light on topics not yet fully investigated by current literature, such as banks' short selling bans after Brexit, the European Deposit Guarantee Scheme and banks' risk appetite framework. This book will be of interest to researchers, scholars and practitioners.

The Global Financial Crisis and the New Monetary Consensus (Paperback): Marc Pilkington The Global Financial Crisis and the New Monetary Consensus (Paperback)
Marc Pilkington
R966 Discovery Miles 9 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Global Financial Crisis has reshuffled the cards for central banks throughout the world. In the wake of the biggest crisis since the Great Depression, this volume traces the evolution of modern central banking over the last fifty years. It takes in the inflationary chaos of the 1970s and the monetarist experiments of the 1980s, eventually leading to the New Monetary Consensus, which took shape in the 1990s and prevailed until 2007. The book then goes on to review the limitations placed on monetary policy in the aftermath of the global meltdown, arguing that the financial crisis has shaken the new monetary consensus. In the aftermath of the worst crisis since the Great Depression, the book investigates the nature of present and future monetary policy. Is the Taylor rule still a satisfactory monetary precept for central bankers? Has the New Monetary Consensus been shaken by the Global Financial Crisis? What are the fundamental issues raised by the latter cataclysmic chain of events? How should central banks conceptualize monetary policy anew in a post-crisis scenario? Existing books have dwelt extensively on the characteristics of the New Monetary Consensus, but few have cast light on its relevance in a post-crisis scenario. This book seeks to fill this gap, drawing on the lessons from five decades of contrasted theoretical approaches ranging from Keynesianism, monetarism, new classical macroeconomics, inflation targeting and more recently, pragmatic global crisis management.

Managing Financial Institutions - Markets and Sustainable Finance (Hardcover): Elizabeth Cooperman Managing Financial Institutions - Markets and Sustainable Finance (Hardcover)
Elizabeth Cooperman
R8,625 Discovery Miles 86 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book goes beyond traditional financial institutions textbooks, which tend to focus on mathematical models for risk management and the technical aspects of measuring and managing risk. It focuses on the role of financial institutions in promoting social and economic goals for the communities in which they operate for the greater good, while also meeting financial and competitive challenges, and managing risks. Cooperman divides the text into seven easily teachable modules that examine the real issues and challenges that managers of financial institutions face. These include the transformative changes presented by social unrest, climate change and resource challenges, as well as the changes in how financial institutions operate in light of the opportunities that rapid innovations and disruptive technologies offer. The book features: Up-to-date coverage of new regulations affecting financial institutions, such as Dodd Frank and new SEC regulations. Material on project financing and new forms of financing, including crowd funding and new methods of payment for financial institutions. New sustainable finance models and strategies that incorporate environmental, social, and corporate governance considerations. A new chapter on sustainable financial institutions, social activism, the greening of finance, and socially responsible investing. Practical cases focusing on sustainability give readers insight into the socioeconomic risks associated with climate change. Streamlined and accessible, Managing Financial Institutions will appeal to students of financial institutions and markets, risk management, and banking. A companion website, featuring PowerPoint slides, an Instructor's Manual, and additional cases, is also available.

Financial Regulation in the European Union (Paperback): Rainer Kattel, Jan Kregel, Mario Tonveronachi Financial Regulation in the European Union (Paperback)
Rainer Kattel, Jan Kregel, Mario Tonveronachi
R1,425 Discovery Miles 14 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection offers a comparative overview of how financial regulations have evolved in various European countries since the introduction of the single European market in 1986. It includes a number of country studies which provides a narrative of the domestic financial regulatory structure at the beginning of the period, as well the means by which the EU Directives have been introduced into domestic legislation and the impact on the financial structure of the economy. In particular, studies highlight how the discretion allowed by the Directives has been used to meet the then existing domestic conditions and financial structure as well as how they have modified that structure. Countries covered are France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Estonia, Hungary and Slovenia. The book also contains an overview of regulatory changes in the UK and Nordic countries, and in post-crisis USA. This comparative approach raises questions about whether past and more recent regulatory changes have in fact contributed to increase financial stability in the EU. The comparative analysis provided in this book raises questions on whether the past and more recent changes are contributing to increase the financial stability and efficiency of individual banks and national financial systems. The crisis has demonstrated the drawbacks of formulating the regulatory framework on standards borrowed from the best industry practices from the large developed countries, originally designed exclusively for large global banks, but now applied to all financial institutions.

Ethical Dimensions of Islamic Finance - Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Zamir Iqbal, Abbas Mirakhor Ethical Dimensions of Islamic Finance - Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Zamir Iqbal, Abbas Mirakhor
R3,475 Discovery Miles 34 750 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides an introductory theoretical foundation of the ethics embedded in Islamic economics and finance, and it shows how this ethical framework could pave the way to economic and social justice. It demonstrates how Islamic finance-a risk-sharing and asset-backed finance-has embedded universal values, ethical rules, and virtues, and how these qualities may be applied to a supposedly value-neutral social science to influence policy-making. This book argues that ethical and responsible finance, such as Islamic finance, could lead the efforts to achieve sustainable economic development. Iqbal and Mirakhor then conduct a comparative analysis of Islamic and conventional financial systems and present Islamic finance as an alternative that can address today's growing problems of inequality, social injustice, financial repression, unethical leadership, and lack of opportunity to share prosperity.

Regional Policy (Paperback, New): Nigel Copperthwaite, Colin Mellors Regional Policy (Paperback, New)
Nigel Copperthwaite, Colin Mellors
R5,475 Discovery Miles 54 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The European Community has committed itself to promoting 'economic and social cohesion' across its regions. Its expenditure - via the 'structural funds' - for these purposes is set to double by 1993. A key component of such expenditure is the European Regional Development Fund, which is receiving increasing attention from local and regional representatives and officials, as well as from companies considering where to locate their businesses. The integrated development operations of the EC involve important new initiatives at the local level. This volume explains how the ERDF operates and its relationship to other sources of funding from the EC. It offers comprehensive and up-to-date information, in a readily accessible format. Section II summarises the key EC policy documents involved, and Section III gives a full listing of all the relevant documents across a range of different aspects.

Third Sector Performance - Management and Finance in Not-for-profit and Social Enterprises (Paperback): Graham Manville,... Third Sector Performance - Management and Finance in Not-for-profit and Social Enterprises (Paperback)
Graham Manville, Richard Greatbanks
R1,584 Discovery Miles 15 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Global financial crisis and colossal sovereign debt has resulted in the need for radical cuts in public expenditure in many countries. Against this background, the contributions in Third Sector Performance acknowledge that, as a result, more imaginative ways of delivering public services are being sought. In countries like the UK, the new concept of The Big Society envisages third sector, or not-for-profit, or charitable organizations and social enterprises stepping in to mitigate the loss of vital public services. This development also gives rise to the likelihood that third sector financial institutions such as credit unions and a possible 'Big Society Bank' will grow in importance. The performance of all these enterprises looks set to become a much more critical issue than it has been in the past. The editors have gathered in this volume, chapters reflecting the fact that third sector organizations are not the same as conventional businesses and are also subtly different from the public sector. There is currently a dearth of knowledge and a lack of research into issues around performance in the Third Sector or Civil Society. This book begins to fill a void in the knowledge base. The internationally sourced contributions represent a balanced offering of academic research findings and practitioner accounts from the Third Sector, together with a section devoted specifically to third sector finance institutions. This book will appeal, internationally, to policy makers within the third sector or involved in the management of n-f-p and voluntary organisations, as well as to those with responsibility for wider public policy, scholars teaching or researching in this area, and students of business and management preparing for roles in social enterprises.

Accounting for Financial Instruments - A Guide to Valuation and Risk Management (Hardcover): Emanuel Camilleri, Roxanne... Accounting for Financial Instruments - A Guide to Valuation and Risk Management (Hardcover)
Emanuel Camilleri, Roxanne Camilleri
R4,667 Discovery Miles 46 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Accounting for Financial Instruments is about the accounting and regulatory framework associated with the acquisition and disposal of financial instruments; how to determine their value; how to manage the risk connected with them; and ultimately compile a business valuation report. Specifically, the book covers the following topics, amongst others: Accounting for Investments; Bills of exchange; Management of Financial Risks; Financial Analysis (including the Financial Analysis Report); Valuation of a business (including the Business Valuation Report) and Money laundering. Accounting for Financial Instruments fills a gap in the current literature for a comprehensive text that brings together relevant accounting concepts and valid regulatory framework, and related procedures regarding the management of financial instruments (investments), which are applicable in the modern business world. Understanding financial risk management allows the reader to comprehend the importance of analysing a business concern. This is achieved by presenting an analytical framework to illustrate that an entity's performance is greatly influenced by its external and internal environments. The analysis of the external environment examines factors that impact an entity's operational activities, strategic choices, and influence its opportunities and risks. The analysis of the internal environment applies accounting ratio analysis to an entity's financial statements to examine various elements, including liquidity, profitability, asset utilisation, investment, working capital management and capital structure. The objective of the book is to provide a fundamental knowledge base for those who are interested in managing financial instruments (investments) or studying banking and finance or those who wish to make financial services, particularly banking and finance, their chosen career. Accounting for Financial Instruments is highly applicable to both professional accountants and auditors and students alike.

Wages, Bonuses and Appropriation of Profit in the Financial Industry - The working rich (Hardcover): Olivier Godechot Wages, Bonuses and Appropriation of Profit in the Financial Industry - The working rich (Hardcover)
Olivier Godechot
R5,066 Discovery Miles 50 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 2008 financial crisis led the whole world to ask questions of the financial industry. Why are wages in the financial industry so high? Are bonuses responsible for the financial crisis? Where do bonuses come from? Politicians and others urged people to believe that the crisis was the price of Wall Street's greed and blamed the "bonus culture" prevalent in the financial industry. However, despite widespread condemnation and the threat of tighter regulation, bonuses in the industry have proven remarkably resilient. Wages, Bonuses and Appropriation of Profit in the Financial Industry provides an in-depth inquiry into the bonus system. Drawing on examples from France, the City and Wall Street, it explains how and why workers in the financial industry can receive such large bonuses. The book examines issues around incentives, morality and wealth-sharing among employees, including the rise of "the working rich" - those who have benefited the most from the high wages and large bonuses on offer to some employees. These people have achieved wealth through their work thanks to new forms of exploitation in our ever-more dematerialised economy. This book shows how the most mobile employees holding the most mobile assets can exploit the most immobile stakeholders. In a world where inequalities are rising sharply, this book is therefore an important study of one of the key contemporary issues. It will be of vital interest to those studying finance, banking or political economy.

Banking and Monetary Policies in a Changing Financial Environment - A regulatory approach (Hardcover): Wassim Shahin, Elias... Banking and Monetary Policies in a Changing Financial Environment - A regulatory approach (Hardcover)
Wassim Shahin, Elias El-Achkar
R4,505 Discovery Miles 45 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 21st century witnessed major changes in the financial environment surrounding bank regulators and banks. Banking and Monetary Policies in a Changing Financial Environment delves into three of these developments and challenges. The first change in the financial environment relates to the rise in the number and sophistication of financial and economic crimes which shaped the international regulatory architecture. New rules and regulations led to the creation of new strategies to combat these crimes, especially those concerning the spread of more advanced money laundering methods and techniques, terrorist financing after the 9/11 attacks, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The second development concerns the global financial crisis of 2008 which drastically affected the regulatory environment of various international and domestic financial authorities causing major changes in bank lending and corporate governance policies, and in the development of the Basel III accord on capital adequacy for bank supervision. The third development manifests itself in the creation of a major European monetary union without a fiscal union and a giant European central bank impacting the conduct of monetary policy. This book combines theory, policy, regulation and institutional approaches with empirical testing, analyzing applications and case studies of various international regulatory authorities and administrations, countries and jurisdictions, central banks and commercial banks. This volume is suitable for those who study international finance, Banking and white collar crime.

Jean-Baptiste Say and Political Economy (Hardcover): Jean-Baptiste Say Jean-Baptiste Say and Political Economy (Hardcover)
Jean-Baptiste Say; Edited by Gilles Jacoud
R4,506 Discovery Miles 45 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Jean-Baptiste Say (1767-1832) was one of the first great economists to have laid down the foundations of economic science. Author of the famous Treatise on Political Economy in 1803, which was revised and re-edited on several occasions, he published numerous other works including a voluminous Complete Course in Practical Political Economy in 1828-9. He also taught political economy successively from 1815 until his death in three Parisian establishments: the Athenee, the Conservatory of Arts and Trades, and the College de France. The texts in which Say exposes his approach to political economy have not been available in the English language until now except for the fourth edition of the 'Preliminary Discourse' which serves as an introduction to the Treatise. This book presents a translation which renders his works accessible to the English speaking world. For the first time, English readers will be able to become directly immersed in Say's principal texts, where he develops his conception of political economy. Jean-Baptiste Say and Political Economy proposes a translation of a selection of eleven of Say's texts. The first three are versions of the 'Preliminary Discourse' from the Treatise's editions of 1803, 1814 and 1826 with the variations of the editions of 1817, 1819 and 1841. The following four texts are the opening discourses pronounced at the Conservatory in 1820 and 1828 and the College de France in 1831 and 1832. The eighth text is the 'General Considerations' which open the Complete Course in Practical Political Economy of 1828, with the variations of the 1840 re-edition. The final three texts are those Say devotes to 'the progress of political economy' in what is akin to a history of economic thought. This volume is of great importance to economic historians and people studying Jean-Baptiste Say, as well as those who are interested in economic theory and philosophy and political economy.
