In his first book for young adults, bestselling author Sherman Alexie tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot. Heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is based on the author's own experiences, coupled with poignant drawings by acclaimed artist Ellen Forney, that reflect the character's art, chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he was destined to live.

A sweeping story of love, adventure and adversity, The Map of Bones by Kate Mosse is the sequel to the number one bestselling The Ghost Ship.

'Mosse is a master storyteller' – Madeleine Miller, bestselling author of Circe

Olifantshoek, Southern Africa, 1688. When the violent Cape wind blows from the south-east, they say the voices of the unquiet dead can be heard whispering through the deserted valley. Suzanne Joubert, a Huguenot refugee from war-torn France, arrives in search of her cousin – the notorious she-captain and pirate commander Louise Reydon-Joubert – who landed at the Cape of Good Hope more than sixty years before, then disappeared without a trace . . .

Franschhoek, Southern Africa, 1862. Nearly one hundred and eighty years after Suzanne’s perilous journey, another intrepid woman of the Joubert family – Isabelle Lepard – has journeyed to the small frontier town once known as Oliftantshoek in search of her long-lost relations. Intent on putting the women of her family back into the history books, she quickly discovers that the tragedies and crimes of the past are far from over. Isabelle faces a race against time if she is not only going to discover the truth, but also escape with her life . . .

Painstakingly researched and beautifully told, The Map of Bones is the fourth – and final – novel of The Joubert Family Chronicles, following the bestselling The Burning Chambers, The City of Tears and The Ghost Ship.

Jan Smuts, one of the most infamous South Africans of the twentieth century remains a controversial figure. Was he one of the outstanding statesmen of his time or was he perhaps a traitor of Afrikaner interests and possibly a racist? Today there are still strong opinions on Smuts’s role.

Like Paul Kruger at the end of the nineteenth century, and Nelson Mandela as the twentieth century drew to a close, it was Jan Smuts who stood head and shoulders above his contemporaries in the first half of the twentieth century; he was a leader of extraordinary stature and his statesmanship is recognised internationally. And yet, the NP and ANC governments have downplayed his contributions for decades, because it did not endorse their Afrikaner and black nationalist versions of South African history. A reappraisal of Smuts will fill a gap in the literature on the history of South Africa in the first half of the twentieth century. Many of the biographies and other works on Smuts appeared during his lifetime or soon after his death. Today, a few generations later, we have a better perspective on his contributions within the historical context of his time. New evidence continues to come to light, making it possible to reach a more informed opinion on questions about Smuts, issues which previously could not be answered conclusively.

The purpose of the book, written almost three generations after his death, is to recall and re-evaluate Smuts’s contributions in various fields and in this way introduce him to the younger generation. It is important that Smuts be judged in the context of his particular time and circumstances. As far as his outlook on war and peace, civilisation, race and class differences, the capitalist system and South Africa’s place in the wider world are concerned, Smuts was certainly a product of his time. It would be unfair to measure him and his contemporaries against today’s norms and values. To do justice to him, his supporters, as well as his opponents and critics, due consideration should be accorded to how they lived, thought and reasoned in that era.

One might as well start with Séraphin: twenty-four years old, playlist-maker, nerd-jock hybrid, self-appointed merchant of cool, Rwandan, stifled and living in Windhoek. In a few weeks he will leave the confines of his family life for cosmopolitan Cape Town where his friends, parties, conquests and controversies await. More than that, his long-awaited final year in law school will deliver a crucial puzzle piece of the Great Plan immigrant parents have for their children when they are forced to leave home and settle in new countries: a degree from one of South Africa's most prestigious universities.

For Séraphin, the coming year promises to be felicitous. But a year is more than the sum of its parts and en route to the future the present must be lived through and even the past must be survived. The Eternal Audience of One follows the intersecting lives of Séraphin and a host of eclectic characters from pre- and post-1994 Rwanda, colonial and post-independence Windhoek, Paris and Brussels in the 70s, the crowded public schools of Nairobi, as well as the hormone-saturated clubs and streets of Cape Town. From one of Africa's emerging literary voices comes a piquant modern epic of family, friendship and migration.

Achieve better marks in Afrikaans (Grade 7-12)

Afrikaans+ is a learner-friendly guidebook which caters for additional language learners who want to achieve better marks in Afrikaans. This practical guide contains explanations in English and is filled to the brim with examples. It explains tests and exams used for both the DBE and IEB and was written by a panel of educational experts who understand the needs of additional language learners.

This book is completely up to date. The Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls (AWS) has just been re-issued, blindsiding many a teacher with the changes in Afrikaans grammar rules. While the AWS is seen as the touchstone for Afrikaans language practitioners, it could be a daunting book to use in the classroom. Afrikaans+ was written with the most recent changes to the AWS in mind, and presents these grammar rules in a clear, practical manner.

Every chapter in the book also offers free online support - exercises, answers and examples - which will be kept up to date by the panel.

The book contains six sections:

1. Comprehension - Begrip: This explains how you should approach a comprehension test, how to look for the answers, and provides tips on how to understand the questions. It also explains how to make summaries. Visual texts, such as cartoons, graphs and maps, are also explained.

2. Grammar - Taal: This is a step-by-step guide to understanding the “how” and the “why” of Afrikaans grammar. You will be guided with English explanations and Afrikaans examples on things like word order, tenses, adjectives, adverbs, time, numbers, plural and diminutive forms, the negative, active and passive voice, pronouns, participles and abbreviations. There are sections offering basic knowledge to help the struggling learner through the exam. But there are also more advanced sections for the learner who wants to get an A and for the teacher who wants to become familiar with all the changes in the AWS.

3. Literature - Letterkunde: Everything you need to know about prose, drama, short stories and poetry. What is the difference between a metaphor and a simile? Who is the protagonist and who the antagonist? We use simple explanations and good examples of all these and other literature terms.

4. Oral - Mondeling: The book contains practical pointers on how to prepare for different kinds of oral, such as interviews, prepared speeches, introducing and thanking a speaker, roleplay, how to make a vlog and how to discuss the booklist you have to read for grade 12. Examples of all these are given, and more are provided online.

5. Vocabulary - Woordeskat: You will always need vocabulary for essays and orals. With the most recent vocabulary on food, technology, life after school, sport and lots more, you will be well prepared.

6. Written work - Skryfwerk: This section starts with a step-by-step approach to writing: how to choose a topic, how to do your planning, what not to use in an essay and how to end your story. The examples of all the different types of written work (essays, long and short transactional writing) and tips on each, will help you to master each one. Online you will be able to read through more examples.

How pro-Israel lobbying groups influence the Middle East policies of Britain, the US and others.

In 1896, a Jewish state was a pipe dream. Today the overwhelming majority of Jews identify as Zionists. How did this happen?

Ilan Pappe unveils how over a century of aggressive lobbying changed the map of the Middle East. Pro-Israel lobbies convinced British and American policymakers to condone Israel’s flagrant breaches of international law, grant Israel unprecedented military aid and deny Palestinians rights. Anyone who questioned unconditional support for Israel, even in the mildest terms, became the target of relentless smear campaigns.

Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic shows us how an unassailable consensus was built – and how it might be dismantled.

We rarely think about the energy systems that prop up our existence. With hot water, lighting and digital entertainment all available at the flick of a switch, it's easy to underestimate the vast global network that makes these things possible.

Growing up in Iraq, Yasmin Ali regularly experienced power cuts - ironic for a country rich in oil and sunshine. Now as an engineer working in energy, Yasmin has a deep appreciation for what these resources mean for our lives.

In Power Up she takes us on a journey across the globe to reveal the bigger picture, from solar farms shimmering in the desert to power stations hidden deep in the mountains. We discover where we get energy from, how it is moved and used around the world - and why we need to understand the whole system if we want to transition towards a clean, green future.

Power Up is a definitive picture of the intricate world that humanity has built, and a rallying cry to face the challenges of climate change using the power at our fingertips.

Composed of interconnecting stories, The Night Alphabet is a mesmerising blend of memoir, fiction and poetry, from one of the most talented literary stylists writing today.

A woman walks into a tattoo parlour. But this is no ordinary woman, and this is Hackney in 2233. Jones' body is covered in tattoos but she wants to add one final inking to her gallery - a thin line of ink mixed with blood that connects her body art together, creating a unique map.

As the two artists set to work, Jones tells them the story behind each tattoo. As Jones is no ordinary woman, these are no ordinary stories: each one represents a doorway to a life Jones fell into, a 'remembering'. Some of these lives were in the past, others in the future, some are sideways, but each of them connects Jones to the two tattoo artists in some way, though they are unaware of it.

We visit the dystopian cities of the Quiet Men, the coal mines of 19th century Lancashire, join a gang of vigilante sex workers, enter the world of an INCEL murderer, haunt the old Maryville gay bar, and uncover plans to genetically modify female children. Each of the stories brings us closer to Jones' truth, and how her life is intricately interwoven with that of the women tattooing her body.

Set across geographies and timespans, The Night Alphabet is a dazzlingly bold and original work, a deep investigation into human nature and violence against women.
