Since its establishment as a federally protected wilderness in 1964, the Boundary Waters has become one of our nation's most valuable-and most frequently visited-natural treasures. When Amy and Dave Freeman learned of toxic mining proposed within the area's watershed, they decided to take action-by spending a year in the wilderness, and sharing their experience through video, photos, and blogs with an audience of hundreds of thousands of concerned citizens. This book tells the deeper story of their adventure in northern Minnesota: of loons whistling under a moonrise, of ice booming as it forms and cracks, of a moose and her calf swimming across a misty lake. With the magic-and urgent-message that has rallied an international audience to the campaign to save the Boundary Waters, A Year in the Wilderness is a rousing cry of witness activism, and a stunning tribute to this singularly beautiful region.
NOTE: This description is for the 2011 reprint with the green and black cover, NOT the 2012 reprint with the brown cover "published" by RareBooksClub.com. There IS NO gibberish or poorly OCR'd text in the one with the green and black cover. "Your thoroughbred camper likes not the attentions of a landlord, nor will he suffer himself to be rooted to the soil by cares of ownership or lease. It is not possession of the land, but of the landscape, that enjoys; and as for that, all the wild parts of the earth are his, by a title that carries with it no obligation but that he shall not desecrate nor lay them waste." H. Kephart Intended as the definitive pocket field guide for the turn of the 20th Century woodsman and camper, the The Book of Camping & Woodcraft was originally published in 1906. This particular "Heritage Edition" appears as it was on the second reprinting in 1910. In 1916, Kephart dramatically expanded the book into two volumes to include wagon camping and semi-permanent base camp construction. These are the equivalent of modern car camping - just a couple of notches down from a motel stay. The 1910 edition is the "purest" of all the editions of "The Book of Camping and Woodcraft." Fully illustrated with photographs and diagrams and packed with woodcraft lore, this book is a must-have for any rugged outdoorsman or bushcraft enthusiast.

Just what IS a "survivalist family"? instead of "survivalist family" we could say "prepared family" or talk about "family preparedness" but that is just so politically correct it makes one sick. Just because the media don't like survivalists and therefore vilify them does not mean we have to change our language. For our purposes, the Survivalist Family is defined as, "A multi-generational group of people living in one house (usually consisting of a father, mother and their offspring) who take positive steps as a cohesive group to prepare for possible future negative situations and circumstances beyond their control." This book will guide you through all that is necessary to be prepared for future uncertainty.
Nine Dog Winter: Winter camping with sled dogs in Canada's Yukon by Bruce T. Batchelor is a true story, about two young Canadians who recruit nine mismatched huskies, and head out camping in the Yukon as the temperature plunges to Sixty-Eight Below. Follow this 1980-'81 winter adventure of a young couple intent on recreating the classic Yukon pioneer lifestyle. Includes dozens of photographs, maps and diagrams, plus complete instructions for building toboggans, harnesses, moccasins and other traditional winter camping equipment. Hundreds of tips gathered from native and white trappers,
pioneers and others who live and thrive in the Northern bush. About the author BRUCE BATCHELOR: Though he'd lived in the Yukon for five years, the author's unfulfilled dream was to spend a winter in a remote wilderness cabin with a woman he loved, training dog teams and making long expeditions. When he teamed up with backcountry ranger Marsha McGillis in 1980, the (mis)adventures could begin Bruce Batchelor came to the Yukon in 1973, planning to stay just
long enough to earn money for a trip to Europe. Instead, he fell in
love with the wilderness and its people, and stayed for most of the
next eight years. He has written three books about his stay in the
North. Marsha McGillis, heroine of Nine Dog Winter, agreed to marry
him in 1983. Their son, Dan, was born in 1992. They live in
Victoria, BC, with a white lab-husky cross named Tyhee Too in
honour of the Tyhee in this story. Bruce and Marsha own Agio
Publishing House, where he edits and directs marketing, while
Marsha designs the books and Dan takes photos. REVIEWER'S COMMENT: "A real page turner. I couldn't wait to see what was around the next bend in the trail as I raced through this delightful read. An instant classic about Canada's North as experienced by two plucky southerners." -- David Pettigrew, filmmaker, adventurer and sourdough

Shortly after the Boy Scouts organized an American version of the successful English program, local organizations called councils began to operate. Composed of progressive community leaders, they offered a framework for Scouting to offer its program to boys. Along the way, councils acquired property-through lease, donation, purchase or a combination of all three-for camping and other outdoor activities. Wings: The Story of Camp Westmoreland recounts the tale of the oldest continuously operational Boy Scout Camp in Alabama. Larry Faulkner, himself a former camper on the property, bases his story primarily on the memory of Scouts and their leaders who used the facility. Scouting began in the area in 1912. By the 1930s, Camp Westmoreland flourished as a popular summer facility. With the acquisition of Camp Jackson, near Scottsboro, Westmoreland went through a period of decline starting in 1979. In the 1990s, dedicated volunteers-including many former campers-worked to restore the property to usefulness. Faulkner's book recounts timeless stories of camp life at Westmoreland through an entertaining and enlightening view of Scouting in northwest Alabama demonstrating the positive impact the Boy Scouts provide in this area. Bob England, Ph.D. Professor of History & Program Director, Outdoor Leadership Northwest-Shoals Community College
