"Bobby Fischer...The precision and energy that he played with is unmatched in the history of chess." Magnus Carlsen, World Chess Champion Nearly 30 years since his last chess game, Bobby Fischer's fame continues to grow. Appearing in Hollywood movies, documentaries and best-selling books, his life and career are as fascinating as they ever were and his games continue to generate discussion. Indeed, with each new generation of computer, stunning discoveries are made about moves that have been debated by grandmasters for decades. International Grandmaster Andrew Soltis played Fischer and also reported, as a journalist, on the American's legendary career. He is the author of many books, including Pawn Structure Chess, 365 Chess Master Lessons and What it Takes to Become a Chess Master.
Many players are attracted to the Dragon Sicilian, but are put off
by the fierce mating attacks that White can launch. In the
Accelerated Dragon, Black aims for an improved version, saving a
move with his queen's pawn. If White tries to ignore the
difference, Black's instant detonation of the centre will come as
an unwelcome cold shower! The authors show that White's main reply,
the Maroczy Bind, is not so fearsome as was once thought Black has
many ways to break out, while quite often it is possible to
manoeuvre around White's 'binding pawns' and show that they
imprison White's pieces as much as they do Black's.

The Petroff Defence is considered as one of Black's most reliable
methods of meeting the king's pawn opening. By counterattacking as
early as move two, Black avoids the hazards of having to face lines
such as the Scotch Opening, the Italian Game and the 'Spanish
torture' of the Ruy Lopez. An early breach of a central file
together with active piece play for both sides characterizes the
Petroff as a typical king's pawn opening.
Until a few years ago, the Petroff opening was favored only by a
few top Grandmasters, including Anatoly Karpov and Artur Yusupov.
However, the last few years have seen a dramatic rise in its
popularity, and it now provides battlefields for many clashes of
the modern elite players, including Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, Leko,
Topalov and England's Michael Adams. This is bound to have a
positive effect on its popularity at club level.
In this book, openings experts Alexander Raetsky and Maxim
Chetverik study the typical plans and tactics for both White and
Black in this complex opening. Using illustrative games, the
authors provide up-to-date coverage of a line that has experienced
a major overhaul in the last decade.
*Written by renowned opening theoreticians
*Ideal for club and tournament players
*All main lines are covered
*Provides everything you need to know to play the opening with
confidence
This truly outstanding book, first published in Russian in the
1970s and regarded as a classic, contains everything you need to
know about how to deliver checkmate.1000 Checkmate Combinations
contains a wealth of elegant and sophisticated chess tactics as
well as systematic and effective instruction. Each chapter covers a
different piece or combination of pieces that is able to deliver
checkmate, and provides illustrative templates for just about every
mating formation. By working through the book, readers will develop
their ability to recognise the potential for checkmate, as well as
the know-how to execute one.Clearly written and beautifully
organised, it will appeal to all chess players but particularly
club players.
In this book, International Master Byron Jacobs explains the basic
elements, strategies, and tactics of the Advance variation of the
Caro-Kann Defense. Although this variation has always been popular
with competitive players, it has lately received revived attention
following its recent adoption by Vishy Anand, Alexei Shirov, and
Veselin Topalov, who have used it to win several brilliant games.
Inspired by their example, several other leading players have added
the variation to their repertoires, and it is now perhaps the most
fashionable way of meeting the Caro-Kann at all levels of play.
International Chess Master Jeremy Silman tests a player's strengths
and weaknesses with 131 problems that cover openings, middlegames
(both positional and tactical), and endgames. As a player completes
a problem, he or she may then turn to consult Silman's lengthy
answer to the problem, which is always detailed yet never dry.
Through this process of problem solving, analysis and advice, a
player is led to discover the major flaws imbedded in his or her
play. Through this same process, a player is also led to an
understanding of Silman's system of thinking about the game, and
how it differs from many other systems of chess thinking.
These books are perfect for enthusiastic chess players who are
starting out in the game, and who are seeking to understand the
basic principles behind these important openings: the Ruy Lopez and
the English. Both books are written in a user-friendly style with
an abundance of notes, tips, and warnings scattered throughout,
while key strategies, ideas and tactics for both sides are clearly
illustrated. The authors of these books are very skilled and
experienced chess writers, who are used to writing for players of
all levels and are renowned for their ability to explain ideas in a
lucid and straightforward manner. These books will be especially
beneficial to those players who have previously sharpened their
chess skills with the earlier books Starting Out in Chess, Tips for
Young Players, and Improve Your Opening Play.In this revolutionary
book, Grandmaster Neil McDonald revisits the basic principles
behind the English and its many variations. Throughout this
easy-to-read guide readers are aided by a wealth of notes, tips,
and warnings from the author, while key strategies, ideas, and
tactics for Doth sides are clearly illustrated. This book is ideal
for the improving players.
This book by Grandmaster David Bronstein, one of the most original
and influential players of the post-war period, is not a self-tutor
in the conventional sense, where the basics of opening, middlegame
and endgame play are drily explained. Instead, the author engages
in a frank conversation with the reader, discussing how strong
players decide on their moves
Most competitive players are very familiar with the idea of a
sacrificial checkmating attack, but the positional sacrifice has
been strangely neglected. By means of a subtle positional
sacrifice, a player can sometimes fundamentally alter the course of
a game in his or her favor. In this instructive and entertaining
book International Master Neil McDonald demonstrates just how
effective well-executed positional sacrifices are. Topics covered
include sacrifices to open lines for the pieces, sacrifices as a
defensive weapon, the exchange sacrifice, the psychology of
sacrifice and much more.
An up-to-date and complete coverage of opening systems beginning
with 1c4 written by a Soviet grandmaster and acknowledged expert in
this line of play. After an apparently modest beginning the game
can take either a strategical or tactical path into the middlegame.
Whether you are attacking or defending, "The English Opening" is an
attractive choice regardless of your individual style of play.
This expertly presented book, updated in 2021/2 edition, tells you
everything you need to know about chess. All the pieces and modern
rules and terminology of chess are explained in an accessible and
structured way, together with an evocative history of the game and
its greatest players. The different strategies are explained along
with how to manage the game as it progresses from opening through
the middle game to the end game. Analysis and teaching commences at
the most basic level, before moving on to intermediate and more
advanced levels. Some of the historic chess masterpiece games are
also explored in detail as inspiration for tactical play. Then the
book offers ideas about where to play chess and who to play
against. Options are outlined such as rapid play or blitz chess,
which have timed finishes, and slow methods, such as correspondence
chess, which involves long distance play. Understand the rules of
the game, pieces and the chess board; includes the basics: how to
practise, strategies for attack and defence and how to win the
game; teaches chess opening strategies, middle games and good end
game techniques at different levels of skill and experience;
includes different ways of playing chess such as online chess, fast
(rapid play and blitz) and slow games (correspondence chess);
offers advice for becoming a more advanced player and playing in
competition and even at a Chess Congress.
Surprise yourself and reach higher! This book is based on real
amateur games and shows you how an average club player can proceed
through the ranks and reach Candidate Master level. Its a hard
struggle, nothing comes for free and your path will be strewn with
setbacks and disappointments. Just like in real life. Alex Dunne
guides you in the more than 50 games that you will be playing and
offers lots of practical, straightforward and effective advice.
Slowly but surely, you will improve in all phases of the game: the
opening, the middlegame and the endgame. Dunne explains when and
how to activate your pieces and how to recognize and punish the
errors your opponents are bound to make. At the end of the book,
having absorbed these lessons, your experience, technique and
confidence will have improved in such a way that your first win
against a master will not come as a big surprise.
Chess Praxis is a superb collection of Aron Nimzowitsch's best
games annotated by the great man himself, but it is even more than
that. Nimzowitsch and his hypermodern ideas had a huge influence on
modern chess thinking. Nimzowitsch first expounded his views in "My
System." In his follow-up Chess Praxis he demonstrated and
explained how his concepts worked in his own games. This is a
completely new translation of Nimzowitsch's classic work, which
will allow the reader to appreciate influential ideas explained in
modern language
Chess world champion Mirko Czentovic is travelling on an ocean
liner to Buenos Aires. Dull-witted in all but chess, he entertains
himself on board by allowing others to challenge him in the game,
before beating each of them and taking their money. But there is
another passenger with a passion for chess: Dr B, previously driven
to insanity during Nazi imprisonment by the chess games in his
imagination. But in agreeing to take on Czentovic, what price will
Dr B ultimately pay? A moving portrait of one man's madness, The
Royal Game: a chess story is a searing examination of the power of
the mind and the evil it can do.
Ideal for those wanting to understand the basics of the Modern
Benoni.
The Modern Benoni is one of Black's most ambitious and audacious
defenses to the queen's pawn opening, and it has been used with
devastating effect by such legends as Mikhail Tal, Bobby Fischer
and Garry Kasparov. From the very start Black creates an
exceptional imbalance in the position, one which leads to dynamic
play and gives Black real chances to seize the initiative. Both
players must be fearless in their approach, as hesitation in the
Modern Benoni often leads to disaster!
In this user-friendly book, International Master Endre Vegh goes
back to basics, studying the fundamental principles of the Modern
Benoni and its many variations. Throughout the book there are an
abundance of notes, tips, warnings and exercises to help the
improving player, while key strategies, ideas and tactics for both
sides are clearly illustrated.
*User-friendly design to help readers absorb ideas
*Concentrates on the key principles of the Modern Benoni
*Ideal for the improving player
From relative obscurity to one of White's favorite queen's pawn
openings, the rise in popularity of the Trompowsky Attack over the
last decade or so has been quite staggering. Even the World number
one Garry Kasparov has tried his hand at this dynamic opening. The
Trompowsky is an ideal weapon for club and tournament players. From
as early as move two White stamps his authority on the game and
gives Black difficult problems to solve. Grandmaster Nigel Davies
presents readers with up-to-date coverage of this ever-expanding
opening. Using model games for both White and Black, he studies the
key strategies and tactics associated with the Trompowsky.

This book provides a rock solid opening repertoire for Black, using
systems based on the move ...c6. The backbone of this repertoire is
the Caro-Kann versus 1 e4 and the Semi-Slav (via a Slav move order)
versus 1 d4. In general these systems aim to neutralise White's
early initiative. They aim for success by the gradual accumulation
of small advantages, rather than by emerging victorious from an
early tactical melee (which is rather problematic with the black
pieces at the best of times). The book is co-authored by Cyrus
Lakdawala and Keaton Kiewra and takes a teacher/student format. The
"student" Keaton Kiewra is a very strong international master with
two grandmaster norms. He normally specialises in razor-sharp
defences such as the Sicilian Dragon and King's Indian. Now he
wants to broaden his style and develop his skills at handling more
sedate positions. His "teacher" is Cyrus Lakdawala, an extremely
experienced player, coach and author, who guides Keaton along the
learning path. *Everything you need to know to defend with Black
systems based on ...c6.*The Q and A approach emphasizes plans and
strategies.*Written by an expert on the Caro-Kann and Semi-Slav
Defences
