Grandmasters Kotronias and Ivanov are renowned as leading theoreticians and chess trainers. They offer a unique and world-class repertoire based on 1.d4! They advocate an ambitious approach for White, with the aim to fight for an advantage in any position. This is their first joint effort; they tackle the ever-popular Queen's Gambit Accepted and their sidelines in Volume 1A and 1B. We at Thinkers believe their job could not have been done any better.
Endgames with bishops versus knights are one of the most frequently occurring in chess. In his first volume international master and trainer Boroljub Zlatanovic, highlighted in his usual methodological way the concepts that can be mastered with a little effort. The book shows the key elements and different themes. By identifying mistakes made by even the best players, the author indicates the need for correct endgame technique with the light pieces. After practicing his conclusions, you soon will discover you are becoming a far more effective endgame player. This is Boroljub's second book, after the highly acclaimed 'Fundamental Chess Strategy in 100 Games'.
Sicilian Kalashnikov contains coverage of all the latest theory,
and is an ideal new weapon for club and tournament players, written
by prominent opening experts. The Kalashnikov is one of the most
modern variations of the Sicilian Defence. As early as move four,
Black stakes a claim in the center and sets the tone for the rest
of the game. Play can often become sharp and as is normal with many
Sicilian lines, the best prepared player is usually the successful
one. In this handy battle manual Jacob Aagaard and Jan Pinski take
a deep look at all the critical ideas and variations of an opening
which has received little coverage in chess publishing until now.

No one likes to make mistakes, but all chess players, even those
belonging to the world's elite, are prone to blundering. How can
this problem be eradicated or, at the very least, kept to a
minimum? Read this book and find out!
There is no doubt that the Nimzovich Defense is one of Black's most inspiring openings after 1.e4. Black strives to unbalance the position by creating new problems for White from move two, giving himself every opportunity to fight for the initiative from the outset. It is no surprise that 1...Nc6 appeals ambitious players who relish a complicated battle. In this book, GM Christian Bauer explains how to use this powerful weapon drawing from his own successful experiences. He is not shy to show you the fundamental ideas, the traps, the pitfalls and naturally the move order subtleties which play such an important role in our modern game of chess. We are convinced this book will give you plenty of confidence and make your opponent think more than twice.
Such has been the acclaim for John Watson's ground-breaking works
on modern chess strategy and his insightful opening books, that it
is only natural that he now presents a strategic opening
repertoire.
Are you bored with playing it safe in the opening? Had enough of developing your pieces sensibly, aiming to control the centre and getting your king castled? Do you yearn to tear the opposition apart in the style of the great 19th century masters? Then Grandmaster Gambits 1 e4 is the book for you! The highly successful writing duo of Richard Palliser and Simon (GingerGM) Williams have teamed up again to create a repertoire based on jettisoning a pawn (and often a whole lot more) very early on. Whatever opening your opponent favours against 1 e4, the authors have a dynamic gambiteering counter which will throw them onto their own resources. * The Sicilian Defence? Attack it with the Wing Gambit. * 1...e5? Tear Black apart with the Max Lange Attack. * The French? Suffocate Black with the Advance Variation including Magnus Carlsen's souped-up version of the Milner-Barry Gambit. * The Caro-Kann? Play the Hillbilly Attack with 2 Bc4! Your opponent might laugh but they won't be laughing when you crash through on f7. Forget about playing "properly" in the opening. Open 1 e4, play the Grandmaster Gambits and rip your unprepared opponents apart!
What is it that makes Magnus Carlsen the strongest chess player in the world? Why do Carlsens opponents, the best players around, fail to see his moves coming? Moves that, when you replay his games, look natural and self-evident? Emmanuel Neiman has been studying Carlsens games and style of play for many years. His findings will surprise, delight and educate every player, regardless of their level. He explains a key element in the World Champions play: instead of the absolute best move he often plays the move that is likely to give him the better chances. Carlsens singular ability to win positions that are equal or only very slightly favourable comes down to this: he doesnt let his opponents get what they hope for while offering them the maximum amount of chances to go wrong. In areas such as pawn play, piece play, exchanges as a positional weapon and breaking the rules in endgames, Neiman shows that Magnus Carlsen has brought a new understanding to the game. Neiman also looks at Carlsens key qualities that are not directly related to technique. Such as his unparalleled fighting spirit and his ability to objectively evaluate any kind of position and situation. Carlsen is extremely widely read and knows basically everything about chess. Whats more, as the most versatile player in the history of the game he is totally unpredictable. THE MAGNUS METHOD presents a complete analysis of the skills that make the difference. With lots of surprising and instructive examples and quizzes. Examining Carlsens abilities together with Emmanuel Neiman is a delightful way to unlock you own potential.
In this book, prolific chess author Cyrus Lakdawala recommends a repertoire for White players who like to open 1 e4. The repertoire is based around two main themes: ----- 1. The suggested variations for White are ones that rely far more on a generic understanding of strategic ideas rather than the memorisation of reams of opening theory. This explains the choice of the Bishop's Opening (handled "Lopez-style") against 1...e5 and the Bb5 variations against the Sicilian Defence. Both these lines are designed to create dynamic and interesting middlegame positions rather than attempting to score a quick knockout victory - a generally overambitious aim that often backfires. ----- 2. The variations are chosen so that White can gain space whenever possible. Therefore the Advance Variation is recommended against the French Defence (1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 e5) and also the Caro-Kann Defence (1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 e5). The fact that these lines often create similar middlegame structures is helpful for general comprehension of White's plans. ----- If you want to develop your repertoire with 1 e4 then this is the book for you. ------ * Everything you need to know to open 1 e4 with confidence --- * Solid, reliable systems that do not require a mass of memorisation --- * Written by one of the world's leading chess authors.
The Italian Game (sometimes referred to as the Giuoco Piano) is one
of the oldest openings around, and also one of the first lines a
player learns when he or she is introduced to chess. It leads to
play that is easy to understand: both sides develop their pieces
logically and begin attacks on the opposing kings. The Italian Game
gives both White and Black the opportunity to play either
aggressively and in gambit fashion, or in a restrained and
positional manner. One of White's most exciting and attacking
options is the legendary Evans Gambit, which has been brought back
into the limelight in this modern era by such uncompromising
players as World number one Garry Kasparov, Alexander Morozevich,
and England's Nigel Short.
Aron Nimzowitsch is one of the most important figures in chess history. He was one of the World's strongest players and contributed enormously to the development of chess both through his games and his writings, which influenced many grandmasters who followed him. Nimzowitsch was a leader of the Hypermodern School, which formed revolutionary ideas on chess strategy to challenge previously held beliefs and created many new opening systems. In this book, Steve Giddins selects and studies his favourite games by Nimzowitsch and examines Nimzowitsch's skills in the vital areas of attack, defence, strategy and endgame play. He demonstrates how we can all improve by learning from Nimzowitsch's masterpieces. Move by Move provides an ideal platform to study chess. By continually challenging the reader to answer probing questions throughout the book, the Move by Move format greatly encourages the learning and practising of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of knowledge. Carefully selected questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an excellent way to improve your chess skills and knowledge. *Learn from the games of a chess legend *Important ideas absorbed by continued practice *Utilizes an ideal approach to chess study
Two great books from the Everyman Chess Library, Play The Accelerated Dragon by Peter Lalic and Play the Benko Gambit by Nicolai Pedersen , brought together in one volume. The Accelerated Dragon remains one of Black's most popular choices in the Sicilian, and the attractions are obvious. Black's opening strategy is easy to understand, and his pieces are quickly developed on active squares. Furthermore, White players hoping to attack in the same way as against the traditional Dragon will be shocked by the Accelerated Dragon's greater flexibility and possibilities for a swift counterattack. In this book, Peter Lalic presents a repertoire for Black based on this line. He outlines a reliable system of development with the aim of choosing clear, consistent plans. Firstly, he demonstrates why the Accelerated Dragon exponent need not fear the Yugoslav Attack. Secondly, if White chooses instead the positional Maroczy Bind approach he emphasizes that positional understanding is far more important than memorization of move sequences. The Benko Gambit is undoubtedly one of Black's most dynamic openings. In return for his pawn investment Black gains long-term pressure, which is often so powerful it continues right through into the endgame. White must decide whether to grab the pawn and try to hold on, or to choose a more aggressive approach. Either way, Black generally succeeds in his aim of unbalancing the position from a very early stage. In this book, Nicolai V. Pedersen presents a concise and practical repertoire for Black within the Benko Gambit. Using illustrative games, he examines the critical main lines of the gambit, the tricky sidelines and also explains how to meet the various options White has of avoiding the Benko.
All Possible defences to 1e4 and 1d4 are covered --- Written by renowned openings experts ------ Tired of playing the same old openings? Worried about having to learn too much theory? Then these are the books that you are looking. Brought together for the first time in one volume, International Master Angus Dunnington presents you with an all-new and attacking repertoire based on the move 1d4 while Grandmaster John Emms offers a new arsenal of opening weapons with which to attack your unsuspecting opponents. Dunnington concentrates on constructing easy-to-learn systems against all of Black's possible defences, choosing lines that are fun to play, easy to learn and will pose your opponents with lots of problems. In each case learning ideas is more important than memorising long variations, so these repertoires should be ideal for players who don't have the luxury of being able to spend countless hours studying theory.
