Many club players think that studying chess is all about cramming
as much information in their brain as they can. Most textbooks
support that notion by stressing the importance of always trying to
find the objectively best move. As a result amateur players are
spending way too much time worrying about subtleties that are
really only relevant for grandmasters. Emanuel Lasker, the second
and longest reigning World Chess Champion (27 years!), understood
that what a club player needs most of all is common sense:
understanding a set of timeless principles. Amateurs shouldnt waste
energy on rote learning but just strive for a good grasp of the
basic essentials of attack and defence, tactics, positional play
and endgame play endgame play. Chess instruction needs to be
efficient because of the limited amount of time that amateur
players have available. Superfluous knowledge is often a pitfall.
Lasker himself, for that matter, also studied chess considerably
less than his contemporary rivals. Gerard Welling and Steve Giddins
have created a complete but compact manual based on Laskers general
approach to chess. It enables the average amateur player to adopt
trustworthy openings, reach a sound middlegame and have a basic
grasp of endgame technique. Welling and Giddins explain the
principles with very carefully selected examples from players of
varying levels, some of them from Laskers own games. The Lasker
Method to Improve in Chess is an efficient toolkit as well as an
entertaining guide. After working with it, players will
dramatically boost their skills without carrying the excess baggage
that many of their opponents will be struggling with.
This is an instructional manual for improving chess players. It
helps you to sharpen your tactics and learn to play dynamic
attacking chess while studying the most entertaining gambits. This
volume deals with various openings after 1.e4 e5, and lines covered
include: Marshall Attack, Traxler variation, Frankenstein-Dracula
variation, Falkbeer Counter-Gambit and more.
Fed up with getting difficult positions with the black pieces?
Tired of always having to keep up with all the latest developments?
Take a break from the mountains of opening theory and play 1...b6!
With the move, preparing a bishop fianchetto, Black immediately
directs the game into relatively uncharted territory, one where
White players are not able to sit back and rely on their 'opening
book' knowledge.
The real beauty of 1...b6 is that it can be played against
virtually every single first move by White, so it is a perfect
choice for Black players with neither the time nor inclination to
memorize a multitude of different defenses. Despite being
relatively unexplored, 1...b6 has been the weapon of some dynamic
and uncompromising world-class players, including Britain's first
Grandmaster, the late Tony Miles.
In this revolutionary book, Christian Bauer reveals for the first
time the secrets of how to play 1...b6 with success. He takes an
in-depth look at both the main lines and White's more offbeat
tries, creating a comprehensive repertoire for the Black player and
highlighting the tactical and positional ideas for both players.
*Written by a 1...b6 expert
*All of White's possibilities are covered
*Full explanation of the most important thematic ideas
The hero has no advantage whatsoever but somehow manages to keep
setting the opponent problems. Their opponent goes slightly astray
and suddenly hero has a tiny advantage. It's not much but now that
they have a little something to work with, they are in their
element. They play accurately and remorselessly and make life
incredibly difficult for their opponent. Suddenly, and almost
imperceptibly, their advantage increases. Further tiny inaccuracies
follow, hero turns the screw and bags the full point. Their
opponent is left shaking their head, wondering where on earth they
went wrong. This is the squeeze and the great champions have been
capable of squeezing opponents to death. Jose Capablanca, Tigran
Petrosian, Anatoly Karpov and, in the current era, Magnus Carlsen
are legendary in this respect. How do they do it? How do they set
problems in apparently sterile positions? How can they continuously
manage to defeat world class opposition from positions that others
would simply give up as drawn? In this book, Cyrus Lakdawala
explains the mechanisms commonly used in squeeze plays. Using
examples from the world's greatest strategic masters he unpicks the
secrets of the squeeze.
Together in one volume for the first time are Graeme Buckley's

question 'What would you do here?' The reader is invited to step
into a grandmaster's shoes, work out all the relevant tactics and
strategies of the game and select a move out of a possible four
choices. A scoring system has been devised which can assess your

as that!
Alekhine's Defence is a sharp and often underrated counter to 1 e4.
Black immediately challenges the white e-pawn and tries to lure
White into constructing a big central position. Black's hope is
that White's central installations will become unwieldy and
vulnerable to a middlegame counterattack. However, Alekhine
enthusiasts must always be careful -- get it wrong and White will
come crashing through Whether you want to play the Alekhine, or
want to know what to do against it as White, this book will be an
essential addition to your armory.

of practical examples. Topics covered include: . The game, the

opening principles...and much more After capturing the world
championship in in 1921, Capablanca was for a time regarded as
practically invincible. Although he surprisingly lost his title to
Alexander Alekhine in 1927, Capablanca remained a leading player

this book, three opening specialists team up and take a

wealth of 'dangerous' options for both colours. Whether playing
White or Black, a study of this book will leave you confident and
fully-armed, and your opponents running for cover!
*State-of-the-art coverage of the Caro-Kann *Packed with original
ideas and analysis *Ideal weapons to shock your opponents
Chess puzzle books are undoubtedly popular - and with good reason.
Solving chess puzzles helps to sharpen a player's tactical and
combinational skills. This ability is absolutely fundamental for
chess development. You won't get better at tennis until you can
consistently hit the ball with accuracy and you won't get better at
chess until you improve your ability to calculate. It is that
simple and there are no shortcuts. Many puzzle books take a far too
simplistic approach and offer endless positions where the solution
is nearly always along the lines of: queen takes something check,
king takes queen, check, check and a pretty mate. Aesthetically
pleasing perhaps but of minimal use for actual improvement as the
patterns are so familiar. Practical Chess Puzzles avoids this
pitfall. The positions chosen are far more like those that actually
appear on the board during the vast majority of games. Furthermore,
at all stages, the puzzles are ranked, enabling the student to
gauge progress and identify and correct weaknesses. * 600 puzzles
featuring instructive, typically "game-like" positions * A ranking
system to assess progress.
An understanding of Hedgehog structures is an essential component
in any chessplayer's knowledge. These structures arise when the
black c-pawn is exchanged early on for the white d-pawn (as in the
Sicilian Defence). White then adopts a formation with pawns on c4
and e4 and Black curls up in a Hedgehog formation with pawns on a6,
b6, d6 and e6. ----- These structures are important as they can
arise from an extraordinary variety of openings including the
Sicilian Defence, the English Opening and the Queen's Indian
Defence. Play is usually highly intricate with White hoping to
exploit the natural space advantage while Black remains solid and
looks to break out of his or her carapace with the classical
thrusts ...b7-b5 and ...d7-d5. ----- Everything you need to know
about the Hedgehog systems. --- The structure emphasizes plans and
strategies. --- Written by an expert on the opening.
Let's face facts: everyone enjoys winning. And the only thing
better than winning is to win quickly! Mistakes are often made in
the early part of the game - at all levels of chess - but a key
skill is to recognise these critical moments as they happen and to
exploit them with maximum efficiency. This is a skill which
Grandmaster Simon Williams addresses in this book. Using
instructive and entertaining games in which one side wins quickly,
he examines all the typical mistakes chess players make in the
opening and early middlegame, how you should look to exploit them,
and how to avoid falling into similar traps yourself. All too often
opponents are let off the hook, mistakes go unpunished and the game
drags on. Don't let this happen to you - become a ruthless winner!
"A bravura performance...An entertaining book" (Kirkus Reviews)
about the dramatic 2016 World Chess Championship between Norway's
Magnus Carlsen and Russia's Sergey Karjakin, which mirrored the
world's geopolitical unrest and rekindled a global fascination with
the sport. The first week of November 2016, hundreds of people
descended on New York City's South Street Seaport to watch the
World Chess Championship between Norway's Magnus Carlsen and
Russia's Sergey Karjakin. By the time it was over would be
front-page news and thought by many the greatest finish in chess
history. With both Carlsen and Karjakin just twenty-five years old,
it was the first time the championship had been waged among those
who grew up playing chess against computers. Originally from
Crimea, Karjakin had recently repatriated to Russia under the
direct assistance of Putin. Carlsen, meanwhile, had expressed
admiration for Donald Trump, and the first move of the tournament
he played was called a Trompowsky Attack. Then there was the
Russian leader of the World Chess Federation being barred from
attending due to US sanctions, and chess fanatic and Trump adviser
Peter Thiel being called on to make the honorary first move in
sudden death. That the tournament even required sudden death was a
shock. Oddsmakers had given Carlsen, the defending champion, an
eighty percent chance of winning. It would take everything he had
to retain his title. Author Brin-Jonathan Butler was granted unique
access to the two-and-half-week tournament and watched every move.
The Grandmaster "is not the usual chronicle of a world-championship
chess match....Butler offers insight into what it takes to become
the best chess player on the planet...A vibrant and provocative
look at chess and its metaphorical battle for territory and power"
(Booklist).

Building and maintaining a chess opening repertoire can be a
demanding task - for a start there are an enormous number of
different lines to chooses from. There's a strong temptation
amongst aspiring players to opt solely for tricky lines in order to
snare unsuspecting opponents, but this approach has only short term
value. As you progress and your opponents become stronger, very
often these line don't stand up to close scrutiny and suddenly you
are back to square one with no suitable opening weapons. ----- In
these two books, brought together now for the first time in one
volume, John Cox and Neil McDonald solve the perennial problems by
providing the reader with strong and trusty repertoires with white
pieces based on the popular opening moves of 1d4 and 1e4. ----- The
recommended lines given here have stood the test of time and are
regularly employed by Grandmasters. ----These books are written in
Everyman Chess's distinctive Starting Out style, with plenty of
notes, tips and warnings throughout to help the reader to absorb
ideas.
The Pirc is an ambitious counter-attacking response to White's most
popular opening move, 1 e4. Black's philosophy is based around
allowing White to build a large and impressive-looking pawn centre,
only to plot its downfall by attacking it with pieces or timely
pawn strikes. When it works, the results can be spectacular, but of
course this method of play carries with it some danger; if Black is
not careful he runs the risk of simply being swamped in the centre.
Such a provocative approach has found favour with a line of
uncompromising Grandmasters including former Soviet Champion
Alexander Beliavsky and Mikhail Gurevich.
In this book James Vigus provides an up-to-date appraisal of the
Pirc and its many variations. Using illustrative games, he examines
the traditional main lines, the fashionable alternatives and the
tricky sidelines, while outlining the typical tactical and
positional ideas for both White and Black. A study of this book
will allow the reader to begin playing the Pirc with confidence in
his or her own games.
*Essential coverage of a dynamic opening
*Written by a Pirc expert
*Ideal for club and tournament players

chess prodigies of all time, he evolved the most perfect chess
technique seen on a chessboard. A former World champion, and one of
the most successful tournament players in the history of the game,
Capablanca's uncanny position judgment empowered him to produce
games that were masterful pieces of position play, and that
culminated often in combinations of startling brilliancy. ----- My
